Response to the Statement by the Oromo Federalist Congress (OFC)
Regarding Somali-Oromo Relations The Oromo Federalist Congress (OFC) recently issued a statement mobilizing our fellow Oromo brothers and calling on the federal government to take action against the Somali regional government, which it accused of establishing administrative structures on land allegedly belonging to the Oromia region — particularly in the border town of Moyale.
This statement poses a serious threat to the peace and stability of the country and the fraternal regions of the Somali and Oromo peoples. It risks inciting fresh conflict between the two brotherly communities. The OFC has demonstrated gross irresponsibility and appears to be working toward reigniting conflict between the neighboring regional states. Therefore, we call on the federal government to take immediate action against the OFC and any other rhetoric that endangers the peace and stability of both regions.
The Somali and Oromo peoples are fraternal communities bound by blood and culture, made
neighbors by the will of Allah. They share many commonalities, and as such, they must live together in peace and solidarity. They supposed cooperate to develop their regions and communities, while also remaining vigilant against voices and groups that seek to fuel discord between them for their own interests.
The Somali Regional Government has a constitutional right to administer its territory in accordance with the law, and is not subject to the directives of any external entity regarding how it structures its administration or delivers services. No part of its territory can be excluded from administrative planning and service delivery. The town of Moyale is one of the towns that
requires structured development and appropriate governance.
We therefore call upon the two fraternal communities — the Somali and the Oromo — to reject anything that could damage their relationship, undermine their peace, or hinder their cooperation. They must unite to oppose those who seek political gain through incitement and conflict between the two communities.
The ONLF calls on both communities to remember the deliberately manufactured conflict instigated by the EPRDF regime during its final days in power — a tactic used to protect its political interests. It is essential that both the Somali and Oromo regional administrations, as well as their respective populations, jointly resist any actors attempting to recreate such
destructive scenarios.
