Thirty years ago, the Violence Against Women Act was passed, making it a federal crime to abuse women. This is a true story of one individual's encounter with domestic partner abuse. It's a good time to revisit the subject. Just because something's illegal, doesn't mean it doesn't happen:

Patricia A. Schoch, RN, was on a house call as a hospice nurse, tending to the needs of a dying man. Pat thought the man was mean, especially to his wife, but having no tangible evidence of abuse, couldn't investigate, and the man died shortly after that visit. Ten years later, Patrica trained as a forensic nurse, and became interested in the sexual assault and domestic violence problems. Last year, she wrote a series of articles on the subjects, putting out a call for stories. Shame and secrecy being the hallmarks of abuse, no one answered. Then one day, Donna did. "Please tell my story," Donna pleaded. Pat recognized Donna as the wife of the dying man she cared for in hospice, and when Donna finally recognized Pat, they both knew they had to tell the story of Donna's struggles. Pat adds layers of compassion, expertise, and finally, hope, to an often hopeless story, and does it with a deft touch for understanding the human heart's capacity for love, cruelty and ultimately, forgiveness.
