I'm Izzy Thomlinson and I was a finalist in So You Want to Be a Scientist in 2012 on BBC Radio 4. I wanted to find out who is most affected by these noises.
Everyone has experienced the cringey horribleness of scraping noises like fingernails on a blackboard. But i noticed that while some people find these noises unbearable, other people are hardly affected at all. For example, do people's responses vary with age? Or gender? I ran an experiment with the help of my science mentor, Professor Trevor Cox, to find out if the sounds that annoy us vary with age.
