We briefly removed this episode from 2022 cuz Dave's job was threatening to get him in trouble, which we would never want, but we're allowed to repost it again. We put it at the top of our queue in case many people haven't heard it. More from us soon, promise! We're recording an episode early next week, which will put 4 in the hopper. Excited to share more soon.

Narcotica is a podcast giving you the straight dope about drugs and the people who use them.

Hey everyone, we recorded a new episode today! Hopefully it won't take a month to get out, things are moving a little slower here at Narcotica but we're still having great discussions with the smartest, most lovely folks in drug policy. Can't wait to share more. Thanks for listening!

In the meantime, don't miss our latest episode about parents who believe in true love, not tough love. Find it on iTunes, Spotify, etc.

And finally, thanks to the awesome folks on Patreon who make this show possible, we truly couldn't have made it 5 years—half a frickin decade!—without you.

The Drug War is more brutal than ever. Narcotica isn't going anywhere.

Sometimes the headlines just make you want to burn everything down. All this talk about "preaddiction," going to war with the cartels, grifters spouting bu****it about "woke" drug policy being responsible for fentanyl and xylazine, the same grifters getting paid by fascists like Michael Shellenberger, PROP exporting their anti-opioid crusade to Europe, increased penalties that haven't stopped the record overdoses, more money for prisons, cops and the DEA and on and on.

We're approaching 5 years at Narcotica this June. We have no intention of going anywhere. And there is a lot of terrible s**t happening that we hope to cover. But we realize it's been a while since we've given you an update or a new episode. There's a reason for that, i.e. family health problems and moving stuff and just regular old burnout. We'll keep this brief and spare you the details.

But hang in there with us, we'll have new episodes soon. In the meantime, thanks for all the support. If you need anything, let us know. Patrons are entitled to free stickers, so hit us up at [email protected] if you want one. Expect cool stuff from us soon.

All three of us recorded an interview yesterday, that was nice and it's a good one. Kinda critical of the harm reduction movement, but hopefully in a constructive way. Can't wait to share it. We have about 3-4 episodes in the queue, they'll be out soon we hope.

"The global drug war, a set of policies and practices pursued in the framework of environmentally-voracious capitalism, plays a role—an increasing role—in the destruction of long-evolved biodiversity, carbon sequestering and homes for many of the Earth’s people."

Few, if any of us, remain unaware of how industries can inflict catastrophic environmental damage—on renewable and nonrenewable resources from ...

"When alcohol enters the brain, it can gum up the way neurons and other cells communicate. Braincells send messages using chemicals called neurotransmitters. Ethanol can trigger the release of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, which are associated with feelings of mood and reward. But the most noticeable effect ethanol has is on GABA receptors, which play a role in calming the nervous system. More GABA means a more sedating, relaxed effect.

"When one is drunk, the brain struggles to produce long-term memories, which account for blackouts," Dr. Sanam Hafeez, a neuropsychologist, founder and director of Comprehensive Consultation Psychological Services said "Alcohol also affects the temporal cortex, which is the area of the brain that makes new memories." In contrast, quitting drinking can improve memory."

"The term "California sober" evokes breezy West Coast stoner vibes, as the state was one of the first to legalize medical ma*****na in the '90s. Getting intoxicated is a big part of being human. It is very probable that many of those reading this now are under the influence of a stimulant like caffeine. Psychedelics and alcohol have played a role in the growth of civilization; though any drug can have ill health effects, there's nothing morally wrong with experiencing a buzz. Regardless, any drug can be toxic if not used responsibly — and no matter what path one chooses, there are always risks. The lines between "sober," "California sober" and "Colorado sober" reflect how different people are risk-averse in different ways."

"The Lancet and many other medical journals have come out with these papers stating "There's no safe amount of alcohol to ever be consumed." So where does alcohol fit into our present day?

There's the infamous Lancet study and other similar studies that argue that the net effect physiologically of alcohol is, at best, zero, neutral and probably negative. And there's debate about this. But in a way, I don't really care.

Maybe it is the case that it's a net physiological negative. I think what's really stunted our conversations about this is that we're looking at it purely through this medicalized lens and only in terms of physiological impact. And I think that's just the wrong way to look at it.

My conclusion in "Drunk" is that I think alcohol still has positive roles to play if it's used carefully. But that said, I do argue in the book that alcohol is much more dangerous now than it has been for almost all of our evolutionary history."

"A new analysis found that less than one-third of the drugs most heavily advertised on TV between 2015 and 2021 have "high therapeutic value." Despite the flashy music and slick production values, the drugs promoted on TV typically aren't even that special compared to generics or other medications."

Yale and Harvard researchers found the drugs with big ad spends aren't usually the best drugs. Here's why

Who will relegalize psychedelics next, California or New York?

As New York begins legal recreational ma*****na sales this week, state lawmakers have pre-filed a bill for 2023 to legalize certain psychedelics like psilocybin and ibogaine for adults 21 and older. The legislation, which will be formally introduced next week, is being sponsored by Assemblymembers L...
