Dear readers, supporters, and friends:
Last year, we announced a pause in our operations, and we promised we’d soon make a decision on Road Grays’s future. Today I want to tell you that we’re officially ending the magazine, and we won’t be publishing any more issues.
—
The reality is that we never sold enough copies of the magazine to break even financially. Profit was never our primary motive, but we reached a point where we couldn’t keep pouring money into a project that wasn’t getting any closer to paying for itself. We could have chased other funding sources in the hopes of growing enough to become sustainable. But that path comes with additional responsibilities and obligations, and this was always supposed to be a fun side project, not a job.
—
So over the past year or so, we’ve instead considered options for reimagining Road Grays as something cheaper and easier to produce. Could we lower the quality of the paper and printing? Drop the page count? Find more ways to use cheap or free content? But none of those options felt right. We decided it’s better to end it now than to water it down.
—
When we started this project in 2018, the goal was to create a print publication that felt timeless, that would still be relevant if you came across it years later—and I think we achieved that. Even though the magazine was short-lived, the caliber of work we published is something we’ll always be proud of.
—
To everyone who played a part in the magazine (whether with words, art, assistance, or advice), and to all our backers, readers, and supporters: Thank you! This journey has been a blast, and it wouldn’t have been the same without you.
—
If I could ask one last favor… We still have some copies of both issues, and we’d love your help getting them into readers’ hands. Our online shop remains open, and we’ve just launched a clearance sale—each issue is now only $7, with FREE shipping. (To make this feasible, we are only shipping to U.S. addresses from now on.) Tell a friend! Or send them a gift! They’ll love it.
With gratitude,
Austin Stahl
