"Utilizing the exciting events from this time frame, Dunlap weaves together the glamour of the movie industry and the arrival of portrait photography and demonstrates that there are always darker sides to everything. Knowledge is power and both women need to learn some new things about themselves and the changing world around them before they can take the next steps forward."

The Courtesan's Daughter
Susanne Dunlap

1910 New York. Seventeen-year-old Sylvie and her French-immigrant mother Justine eke out a living doing piecework in a tenement on the Lower East Side, while Sylvie attends school so that she can escape their life of poverty by becoming a teacher.

At least, that’s what her mother believes should happen. Sylvie, though, has a different dream. She wants to be a star in the new moving pictures, just like the beautiful Vitagraph Girl. When she meets a dangerously handsome Italian boy at church one Sunday and he encourages her ambitions, she begins secretly taking steps toward the career she knows her mother won’t approve of.

Ambition, survival, and unexpected alliances combine in this mother-daughter story that proves love can conquer all—at a price.

My thoughts: I have read and loved many of Dunlap's works. She has the ability to write about person and place in such a way that the reader is spellbound. With this latest work, Dunlap takes readers on one woman's journey to protect her daughter at all costs. Justine would do everything in her power to place her daughter on a path for success. Sylvie accepted her mother's efforts until she realized that making her own decisions allowed her to fulfill her unspoken dreams. Unmentioned horrors and unexpected dangers amount to a flurry of secrets that neither can truly unveil to the other. The inclusion of the early years of Vitagraph Studios was a very nice addition and correlated well with Sylvie's desires.

Leedswick Castle has housed the Alnwick family in the English countryside for generations, despite a family curse determined to destroy their legacy and erase them from history.

1870. After a disastrous dinner at the Astor mansion forces her to flee New York in disgrace, socialite Beatrice Holbrook knows her performance in London must be a triumph. When she catches the eye of Charles Alnwick, one of the town’s most enviably-titled bachelors, she prepares to attempt a social coup and become the future Marchioness of Northridge. When tragedy and scandal strike the Alnwick family, Beatrice must assume the role of a lifetime: that of her true, brave self.

1917. Artist Elena Hamilton arrives in Northumberland determined to transform a soldier’s wounds into something beautiful. Tobias Alnwick’s parents have commissioned a lifelike mask to help their son return to his former self after battle wounds partially destroyed his face. But Elena doesn’t see a man who needs fixing—she sees a man who needn’t hide. Yet secrets from their past threaten to chase away the peace they’ve found in each other and destroy the future they’re creating.

1945. Alec Alnwick returns home from the war haunted but determined to leave death and destruction behind. With the help of Brigitta Mayr, the brilliant young psychoanalyst whose correspondence was a lifeline during his time on the Western Front, he reconstructs his family’s large estate into a rehabilitation center for similarly wounded soldiers. Now Alec’s efforts may be the only chance to redeem his family legacy—and break the curse on the Alnwick name—once and for all.

Happy Pub Day to Author K.T. Blakemore! The Good Time Girls is out today!

It's here! I am absolutely thrilled to say The Good Time Girls is officially in the world today. This book was, bar none, my favorite to write - I had a ball following Pip and Ruby on their escapades across Kansas.

There are three people I have to thank today - Valerie Biel of Lost Lake Press for her mad marketing skills, Kerry Cathers for her eagle eye edits, and Jacqueline Vick for her cheerleading and leaning an ear when I needed to work through story issues.

Without further ado, I say to our heroines "Welcome to the World!!!!!"

PS - If you want to order from your local bookstore, please do! You can also order your hardback or paperback from Bookshop.org: https://bookshop.org/p/books/the-good-time-girls-k-t-blakemore/19892677?ean=9780990584384

Madame Pommery by Rebecca Rosenberg Novels

Wine, a women pioneer before her time and historical fiction - what more can you want from a novel? This was such a fascinating read, based on the true story and person of Madame Pommery who made a name of herself after taking over her husband's failing winery and businesses as a widow. A woman business owner was not fathomable during this time, but Madame Pommery found a way to do just that against the advice of many. Having a dream and always wanting to help those in need Madame Pommery often was on the brink of failure but she always found a way to pull through and prove herself.

This novel had so much history written in it, and I really learned a lot about wine, wine making and how she pioneered a new type of wine to be had with meals. Wine had always been this rich, sugary robust drink and she reconfigured this evening after meal elixir. Many thought she was nuts in her ideas and would fail miserably. You cannot just change wine and it's use but she did and the rest is history as they say. Madame Pommery was an innovative woman and often used every thing to her disposal. Over coming barrier after barrier, undermining by many, including her son and then the Franco-Prussian war that caused occupation of her house by soldiers, she still fought for every drop of her wine and proved her dream true in the end.

Thank you to Historical Fiction Virtual Book Tours for the invite and to the author for sending me a free copy of her novel. I really loved this one and learning about Madame Pommery. This review is of my own opinion and accord.

"Rosenberg once again delivers in this latest novel of her Champagne Widows series. Readers not only get introduced to another bold, courageous, successful woman, but they also get to experience the cut throat savagery of the time period. Many thanks to Rebecca Rosenberg for highlighting this extraordinary woman!"

"Alissa Baxter has quickly become a favorite chaste Regency Romance author, and The Baronet’s Lady Biologist, filled with wonderful characters, a dashing (if quick to judge) hero and an endearing (if rather set on her own course) heroine, along with a lively storyline makes for an enjoyable read. With touches of humor and a sweet love story that left me smiling, the Linfield Ladies series continues to be a delight!" - Bookworlder

Four sisters in hiding. A grand duchess in disguise. Dark family secrets revealed…an alternate future for the sisters from Jennifer Laam, author of The Secret Daughter of the Tsar and The Lost Season of Love and Snow.

✨The Rose of Washington Square ~ Book Review & Tour✨
By Pat Wahler
Available Now!

Is there a toy that will sweep you back to your childhood? My mother would let me play with her Kewpie doll when I was little. The little cherub face, with its shy smile, eyes looking to the left or right, its plumb little tummy, cute little curl on top, just waiting to be played with. This book takes you through the life of Rose O'Neill, the creator of the Kewpie. She was determined to break through all of the men illustrators to be able to draw her cartoons and have them go to print. She was brought up to never give up, to go for her dream, no matter how hard you must fight.

Not only is Rose fighting to make a living for herself, but she also carries all of the weight for her family. She is determined to make a better life not just for herself but for her parents and siblings. Rose wanted to carry the world on her shoulders, make their lives easier, and not want for anything. It was a different time, a time when women were supposed to be in the background, taking care of the home. Not working their tail off to support everyone around them. The Kewpie came out of an illustration that took off. Rose knew that every child should have a Kewpie in their hand, and she was determined to get it there. Not only did they bring joy to children's faces, but they hit upon literal Kewpie gold. Living with money beyond their wildest dreams. Rose had it in her head that she must take every artist, friend, family member under her wing, give them a roof, shelter them, and feed them. This was fine until the war hit and the depression took hold. Shaking the very foundation that Rose had created.

Pat Wahler brought Rose O'Neill to life. You can picture her sitting in her studio creating her illustrations, comics, Kewpie's, sweet monster, and her sculptors. The family dynamics, the artist communities, the friendships, the family drama, takes hold of you and does not let go. The amount of research that went into this book is phenomenal and oozes from every page. Thank you to and for my gifted copy.

✍️The Rose of Washington Square ~ Book Feature & Tour✍️
By Pat Wahler
Published on January 20, 2023

I am about to finish this book and it is a phenomenal read. Stay tuned for a full review this coming week!

Synopsis: She set out to make her way in a man's world, rising from obscurity into one of the most famous women of her era.

Self-taught artist Rose O'Neill leaves the Midwest for New York in 1893, determined to become an illustrator in a field dominated by males. Mindful of her duty to the impoverished family she left behind, Rose’s obligations require her to yield to the men who hold the reins of her career; as well as the men she grows to love.

Yet despite every obstacle facing her, she excels at her craft, eventually designing a new character, the Kewpie. Her creation explodes into a phenomenon, but Rose’s disenchantment with the status quo fosters new ambitions. She must decide whether to remain within the boundaries dictated for her, or risk everything she’s gained to pursue the creative and personal passions that ignite her soul.

With grit and tenacity, Rose O'Neill blazed an unforgettable path as artist, writer, suffragist, and philanthropist during the turbulent times of the early 20th century.

Thank you to and for my gifted copy!
