My honest opinion on mixing in the box versus using analog hardware versus hybrid studios is as follows:
Most of you know that I primarily mix in the box, but I’ve also worked in studios equipped with every piece of gear imaginable. I believe the sound differs significantly between these methods, so let me explain.
Analog hardware tends to make it easier to achieve a warmer, rounder, and fuller sound. While you can get pretty close to that sound when mixing in the box without using analog gear, it requires a solid understanding of the plugins you're working with. For instance, the CLA-76 VST isn't an exact replica of the hardware, but it's quite close. You can use other plugins alongside the VST to get even closer to the desired sound. Thinking outside the box is crucial when mixing in the box—pun intended!
Hybrid studios have become my go-to choice because they allow you to benefit from both worlds. I like to think of it like this: you can choose to be very right or very left, like being strongly Republican or Democratic, or you can find a middle ground and take the best aspects from both sides. Personally, I thrive in that middle ground!
Anyway, that’s my opinion!
