To tag or not to tag…This question came up recently in conversation and here’s what I learned: Don’t tag people without their permission! When you add a tag for someone, it creates a link to their profile. They also get a notification. The post you tagged may also show up in their timeline, and it may be visible to their friends. Sounds cool, right? BUT, it can also be a bit of an invasion of privacy, and while it’s a great way to get attention for your post, it can also be unwelcome. Caveat: Always tag family for family posts!

Through the years, my friend and mentor Betty Garrett has generously introduced many *up and coming* speakers who've since grown into SUPERSTARS! I still remember the very first time Simon T. Bailey took the stage at an industry program. His megawatt smile and ingratiating personality embraced me! LOVE what he has to say about GSI. Congrats, Betty!

Sponsors and Trade Shows and the Virtual Experience: Now that we're approaching the 1-year mark since the halt of LIVE experiences, we're learning more about what does and does not work (as well) in the virtual space. I still believe, if you're *creative* with solutions, there's a multitude of benefits for exhibitors and sponsors on the virtual side IF they're willing to work a little harder and take advantage of the tools provided by virtual software.

Since the pandemic began, industry insiders have pinpointed trade shows as the event format least suited to virtual delivery. While the wider reach of virtual events might seem to provide automatic marketing value, trade show sponsors are telling a different story.

More than anything, my wish for 2021 is that we all stay healthy and make smart decisions so we can return to being together in person safely once more.

I've always been able to get to the other side of the tunnel before everyone else and have often been told to slow down so everyone else can catch up. Turns out it's an asset, per Steve Jobs: "A lot of [what it means to be smart] is the ability to zoom out, like you're in a city and you could look at the whole thing from the 80th floor down at the city. And while other people are trying to figure out how to get from point A to point B reading these stupid little maps, you could just see it in front of you. You can see the whole thing," Jobs says in the talk.

Jobs offered surprising advice to those looking to maximize their intellectual potential.

On September 10, 2001 (19 years ago), 246 people went to sleep in preparation for their morning flights. 2,606 people went to sleep in preparation for work in the morning. 343 firefighters went to sleep in preparation for their morning shift. 60 police officers went to sleep in preparation for morning patrol. 8 paramedics went to sleep in preparation for the morning shift. None of them saw past 10:00am Sept 11, 2001. In one single moment life may never be the same. As you live and enjoy the breaths you take today, kiss the ones you love, snuggle a little tighter, and never take one second of your life for granted.

What's your story? And how will you tell it? This is a timely read, researched and written by Joan Eisenstodt, the most curious of us all in the meetings industry. She really, really does want to know. And thankfully, she generously shares as she learns.

“As Dr. [Maya] Angelou entered the conference hall, the air was electric with excitement and awe. Even at 85, she invigorates a crowd as if she were a rock star! She started to speak and the crowd hushed to hear her every word. From beginning to end, she did not lecture, she did not follow an outl...

Sixty percent of planners now say their primary job function is to reschedule or rebook meetings and events. Another 27 percent are spending most of their time researching for possible future events, but not booking any business. Just 5 percent are focused on contracting for new meetings.

Pandemic setbacks hamper the ability to book face-to-face events, particularly in the U.S.

By now, my hope is that you’ve selected a virtual software partner and a production partner (if they’re both from the same company, kudos to you!). Now the big challenge will be keeping people interested start to finish. Not so different than all the fabulous live events we’ve been doing with big stage production; just presented differently. I’ve got a handful of webinars coming up that’ll break it all down so you don’t feel so overwhelmed. In the meantime, read this article to stay *in the know* with emerging patterns and challenges for virtual experiences.

Virtual events have not yet matured into the solution they have the potential to be — according to EventMB research, 40 percent of planners have been unable to organize a successful virtual event this year. The biggest roadblock? Engagement.

I love when an organization is decisive AND strategic in the face of adversity! Case in point: The American Society of Neuroradiology was in the final stages of retooling its Annual Meeting in Las Vegas. Then came COVID-19. Here’s how the meeting was *re-imagined* all over again as a virtual event.

First article I've read about a LIVE expo happening in the midst of COVID19. And, it appears the event was a success. Perhaps this can happen when there's a LOT of space in the venue and ALL the safety protocols are respected and adhered to. Seeing what they did in the bathroom alone is SO creative! (Fingers crossed that no attendees contract the virus.)

Microsoft New York is introducing some big updates to Microsoft Teams. The software giant has been working on a new “Together Mode” for Teams ever since the COVID-19 pandemic began, and it’s designed to create a virtual live avatar of yourself that’s supposed to help you better engage with meetings. Once you get over the fun or gimmicky parts of it, this platform actually feels like a far better way to remove visual distractions. Worth checking out!

Microsoft Teams is also getting a dynamic view, emoji reactions, and lots more.

When planning a virtual conference, consider this: 59 percent of respondents said that two hours is the ideal length, while 19 percent said they would prefer up to four hours daily. This is just one golden nugget in an insightful article containing multiple takeaways to help us plan better!

A new survey reveals that an attendee’s age doesn’t matter much when it comes to preferred length, time of day, or cost of an online event—but other factors do.
