Severe Wx Update
Severe weather update for Athens and all of North Georgia!
Heads up! Stay aware throughout the day and into tonight. Here is PJ Gudz with your Severe weather update.
FLURRIES POSSIBLE:
Good morning, Athens!
For the past week the cold temperature has been the main story. And, frankly, it is still entirely too cold out there. But we have the chance for some snow flurries as we head into the evening hours today (Monday) and into the overnight and early morning hours of tomorrow (Tuesday).
NOW - 1) Our atmosphere is too dry at the lower level for snow to stick and accumulate on the ground. We will likely NOT see accumulations more than a dusting AT BEST. 2) We call this system bringing the flurries a “clipper system”. This is because a quick shot of cold air “clips” an area and moves at quick speeds so, if any impacts, they are short lived. Again, because of the quick pace of this system we will likely NOT see accumulations more than a dusting AT BEST. 3) Temperatures will climb into the 40s tomorrow (Tuesday) afternoon. Anything (light if it does) that sticks to the ground, will all melt by late tomorrow morning.
Areas across Athens, Atlanta metro, and suburbs will are more than likely just going to see flurries floating around in the sky and maybe a few sticking to mulch or grass. This does not look like a system that is going to affect roadways, travel, or power. Higher elevations in the mountains are more likely to see that dusting than elevations that are lower.
Post your videos below with the city you are in so we can see what each area experienced!
More updates about warmer temperatures and wetter weather coming soon!
BLUSTERY & COLD:
The only two words to describe what it feels like outside. The cold will continue and so will the wind. Through Christmas Eve and the early part of Christmas Day, winds will still be on the gustier side sustained between 10-20 MPH with gusts occasionally higher. You still need to keep the four P's in mind for a few more days! People, pipes, pets, and plants! We're tracking a little bit of a warm up as we head into the new year!
Current Temperatures across North Georgia make it easy to spot where the wall of cold air is pushing in, temperatures are about to DROP!
Wind Chills
TIMING THE COLD:
Right now the Arctic cold front that will be bringing frigid cold temperatures across the state is now draped across the Ohio River Valley and Southwest inching closer and closer as we head into the evening hours. Temperatures are cool now and by 8 AM Friday morning, wind chills are going to be in the single digits and sub-zero for much of North Georgia including Athens. This is going to continue through Friday, Saturday, and into the early morning hours of Sunday before we gradually get a little bit warmer.
Stay safe and warm out there!
