Weather Update 9/25/24:

Please take Helene seriously Thursday evening through Friday morning. We are expecting several impacts including strong winds, heavy rain, potential flooding, and an isolated tornado threat.

The center of Helene could very well approach the Atlanta/Athens area Friday morning between 2 AM - 6 AM.

Things to do:

1) Clear out gutters and storm drains. We could easily see 5-10 inches of rain.

2) Stay in rooms away from trees that could fall over. We could see sustained winds of 30-40 mph. Gusts over 50-60 mph can't be ruled out. East of the center could easily see hurricane-force winds as the pressure of the storm will remain very low. (Lower the pressure = stronger the storm)

3) Keep electronic devices charged and plan for power outages.

The good news is that this storm will move through quickly, but it will pack a punch. The stronger the storm prior to landfall in Florida will mean bigger impacts here.

Hi, it's Dr. Knox at UGA. After nearly 4.5 years of our UGA atmospheric sciences majors serving your area via AthensGaWeather, I'm thrilled to announce that we are expanding to become the *WeatherDawgs* (with full approval from UGA Athletics and Marketing and Communication).

Our new website is https://www.weatherdawgs.net/ and that's where you will find our forecasts for this weekend's winter weather threat--and all our forecasts, blog posts, videos (once our studio is repaired from flood damage) for all of north Georgia. We are also on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/) and Twitter (https://twitter.com/WxDawgs). As we've always done, we will provide severe weather and breaking weather coverage as the need arises.

A lot of great things are happening in our atmospheric sciences program at UGA, and you'll see the proof of that on those platforms in the weeks and months to come!

Sincere thanks to UGA alum Matt Daniel WBRC for allowing us to use this page since September 2018. Dozens of our students have gained valuable experience, quite a few now have jobs in broadcast meteorology, and the Athens region has benefited from his original, cutting-edge vision for this page for nearly 14 years. Matt's an inspiration for all of us, me included--thank you!
