Young artist , a Bachelor of Performing Arts Theater Student in Bicol University College of Arts and Letters (BUCAL), is a theater arts performer, filmmaker, and Vice-President of Ad Astra - Bicol University Film Society for the academic-year 2023-2024. also a well renowned Self-Portrait Photographer. Started from being the favorite one in his family to be photographed, to discovering his love for the craft of photography in his high school years, he still managed to keep on creating for the love of his craft. From having doubts to consider himself as an artist, to even the self-portrait photographs as an art itself, he overcame some of the hurdles he faced. He took me on the obstacles of journey from finding his distinctive niche, to the negative factors that he experienced in this digital age that he faced not just as a photographer but also as a creator.

Finding his own niche was not as easy as it was, because of the stereotypical aspects of being a photographer. He questioned himself at the start since what he would capture is not the typical type of photographer that would capture landscapes, sceneries, and portraits of other people. But still, he continued to stick with capturing Self-Portraits because it is where he can express himself in a visual manner.

โ€œNag focus na rin ako sa ganon, sa pagiging Self-Portrait Photographer kasi mas nae-express ko dun โ€˜yung sarili ko visuallyโ€, Yuan stated.

Sorelle Amore, another Self-Portrait Photographer that he adores, quotated/said โ€œDonโ€™t compare yourself to othersโ€. This is one of the lessons that he truly cherishes in maintaining a humble ground to his craft, because every artist has their own style in whatever craft theyโ€™re in. In a way that he himself always innovates, such as not sticking to a specific angle for all of his photos to doing concepts that were based on the different experiences that heโ€™d gone through such as being broken-hearted. In having a background as well in theater arts it made it easier for him to express those emotions like love and pain, in a type of art form in which if we would take a look at it, is not really directly implied.

Of the several photo shoots that he did, one of the concepts that he was most proud of was when he created a concept shoot that he did during the pandemic. At that time, a series on Netflix was on trend on social media entitled โ€œGirl From Nowhereโ€, with a whole set of photos inspired from each episode of the series in which he only edited on the editing app โ€œPicsartโ€. However, it caught a lot of attention, after he posted it in his social media accounts, it received various compliments from netizens. It boosted his confidence to keep on creating self-portraits to edit the photos in an editing app on his phone; there were still people who loved seeing the works he posted.

Iโ€™ll keep on creating more kasi bet nila. So nakaka-proud sya for me kasi that time, ano lang ako, for fun, wala naman akong ine-expect and parang gusto ko lang i-express rin ang sarili and nagandahan [lang] ako sa seriesโ€.

This comes to say that his followers and reactors played a huge part in the confidence that he needed in still continuing his craft until now.

Every artist out there deals with creative burnouts from time to time may it be within weeks, months, and even some a year. With Yuan, his ritual in dealing with this is by eating and doing some of his favorite hobbies to do which is binge watching K-dramas, BL series and films, until new inspirations come up. Another thing that he does is scrolling through Pinterest. He would just take down notes of the different concepts that he would like to create in the near future.

โ€œAnd also, Pinterest kung nawawalan ako ng idea, nagno-notes lang talaga ako, kahit โ€˜di ko pa magagawa ngayon [like kung] ano ang balak ko in the future,โ€ Yuan added.

And when it comes to struggling with these creative burnouts, he said; โ€œIt will just pass, since itโ€™s also a process. It will not stay there forever, but it still depends on you as a person you need to move, you should not depend on the number of days, and even to other people. Because that is just the process of life, it will just flow, you just really have to move on at some point.โ€

โ€œIt will pass, proseso lang โ€˜yan eh, hindi ka naman mag i-stay forever, although ikaw din as a person you need to move, hindi ikaw pwede umasa sa panahon, โ€˜di ka pwede umasa sa ibang tao. Though ano lang โ€˜yan process lang โ€˜yan ng buhay, dadaloy lang โ€˜yan. kailangan mo rin mag move talaga.โ€

With the soaring use of AI, this has been one of the biggest threats to every creator / artist out there. This trend made many people try AI by editing their photos into a 90โ€™s version of themselves, it gave Yuan the inspiration to do a concept shoot entitled โ€œDo you Think AI is Better?โ€But this actually triggers him, that if this new kind of technology would go on in the future, this may lessen the value of him as a photographer as well as to the other creators like him.

โ€œSo lugi ako, wala na akong trabaho in the future, pano โ€˜yung iba na โ€˜yun ang trabaho nila, โ€˜yung editors na nagka-cramming , nagpapakahirap mag-edit eh may AI lang pala so ano na silbi namin. So, parang it's also one of the problems sa ating mga artists, mga creators na, โ€˜yung technology natin is umuusbong na pero โ€˜ wag naman sana dumating sa point na pati โ€˜yung mga totoong tao na mga artists mapalitan na ng mga AI na ito.โ€, Yuan expressed.

โ€œRight now hanggang sa end of December kasi may mga planned photoshoots na ako, Iโ€™m just planning to create and create more hanggang sa ma-improve ko โ€˜yung craft ko kasi dumating din ako sa point na nagsawa din ako sa mga puro close up shots. So, starting 2023, nag-experiment ako sa whole body shots. Kung tripod lang kasi, โ€˜di ko nakukuha ang tamang angle, gustong- gusto ko din kasi ang kitang-kita ang haba ng legs, eh โ€˜pag self -portraits, since mag isa ka lang, mahirap siyang makuha pero ngayon Iโ€™m trying my best na makuha ang mga whole body shots and for more improvement, gusto ko din lumabas sa comfort zone ko na backdrop-backdrop, studio setupsโ€™, Yuan explained.

โ€œMay mga gusto akong ilabas na emotions and alam ko kaya ko siya ilabas sa photography. Kasi, โ€˜yun naman ang best asset ko, โ€˜yun yung best weapon ko in releasing my emotion. And, I hope malabas ko โ€˜yun sa photoshoots ko para din ang mga tao, โ€˜yung mga viewers ko, mga reactors ko, is maramdaman din nila ang mga emotions na gusto ko iparamdam. And yun din kasi ang kagandahan ng photography, kasi kahit walang words, walang voice, picture lang, you can already depict an emotion, a story from that. And sana yun ang tumatak sa mga tao in the upcoming years sa mga photoshoots na ire-release ko. Sabi nga diba nga nila โ€˜A picture is worth a thousand words.โ€, Yuan shared.

Nonetheless, with Yuanโ€™ s dedication and perseverance, he is definitely a force to be reckoned with in the craft of Self-Portrait Photography.

Bicol University (BU) has been a home of young talented individuals who craft such excellent and impactful products.

With this, was one of the sterling bands formed in BU and established by passionate young musicians who are taking up Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, at Bicol University College of Engineering (BUCENG), who impeccably foresee themselves performing live on stage, entertaining and hyping a thousands of crowd.

Christian Matteo Atienza, 22, bass guitar of the band, stated that their band started to form in their first-year college.

He mentioned that they have this subject, Komunikasyon sa Filipino (KomFil), in compliance with presenting an original composed song about the Filipino Language.

โ€œMay pinaka-original talaga kaming ginawa, ang title na โ€˜yun is hikayat - paghihikayat sa wikang Filipino,โ€ he stated.

โ€œTapos, originally tatlong members lang kami doon, sabi namin magandang nagsa-start na kami roon,โ€ he added.

JKML was their first band name which consists of pioneer set of young musicians initials named JM, Keith, Matteo, and Luis.

It was in the midst of a pandemic that they started to practice secretly at Christianโ€™s residence because of the restrictions implemented in the country.

It happened that while they were practicing, their vocalist and bass member had a difficulty in singing and got replaced by newly-recruited member, Angel Domdom, 21, main vocalist, which led to how Only Band started.

โ€œYung transition kasi noon โ€˜di ba apat lang sila, wala pa kami madaming nagbago, madaming umalis, may mga dumating, may bumalik. โ€˜Yung original talaga โ€˜yung JKML which is composed nila sinaMatteo, Luis, Keith and JM tapos โ€˜ayun, umalis โ€˜yung bokalista nila kaya doon ako pumasok like nag-start โ€˜yun nung ano - studentโ€™s fest last third-year - Octoberโ€ Angel stated.

Only Band was established for almost four years and counting.

โ€œSince pandemic band kami, nag-start kami sa online, puro view lang wala kaming ma-compare โ€˜yung banda kung hindi doon sa website na hindi ko pwedeng pangalanan, since โ€˜di man kami fans,โ€ Luis Jay Raquion, 22, pianist of the band, mentioned in an interview with The Iskolars.

He only changed the word โ€œbandโ€ and thatโ€™s how their band name was formed.

โ€œKada magpapakita kami natatawa na kaagad yung mga tao,โ€ he added.

It was the year 2020 in the era of JKML, when they debuted on stage as part of the National Arts Band in their respective colleges.

Transitioning to their new band name Only Band, it was followed by an event at SM Legazpi when they got invited to perform at โ€œPaskuhan sa BU 2021โ€.

In 2022, Bicol University - University Student Council (BU-USC) invited them to perform on stage for studentโ€™s fest, and this was the moment when their group gained wide recognition, hyped the audience, and encouraged students to sing along with them.

The previous live performance they attended was in 2023, when they received an invitation to the KALeidoscope: CAL Night Concert at BUCENG Gymnasium.

On the other hand, the word "conflict" rarely happens in their band, as disagreements over music selection and practice delays exist.

โ€œYung song choice kasi hindi namin kami pararehas ng genre and at the same time, may mga ibang mga kunwari may pinipilit na song, isagad lahat, 100% lahat, meron naman stable lang at chill lang,โ€ Luis stated.

โ€œTapos kung ano โ€˜yung mga final says. Pero โ€˜yung mga away, wala man siguro.โ€ Angel added.

Due to their commitment to their academic studies, their band is not their main focus.

Angel Domdom shared that they only perform on stage if someone invites them, for the sake of the university.

However, they don't really pursue it as much because it's challenging to keep up with electrical engineering.

๐—•๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ฃ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป

In over four years of existence, Only Band surpassed challenges and was able to improve their styles and genres in music.

Angel Domdom shared in the interview that their band already discussed their plans, and upon the agreement of the majority, they will pursue to perform on stage, not as a student, but a set of electrical musicians who always have a burning passion to play on stage.

โ€œSabi nila, after natin grumaduate tapos โ€˜pag may time na tayo balik sa kung ano - kung ano โ€˜yung passion natin, tapos ganoโ€™n tugtog tayo ulit, kung available. Unahin muna namin yung acads kasi mahirap tapos career, tapos โ€˜pag tapos na ang career โ€˜pag medyo okay na, stable na kaming lahat balik kami sa passion sa music industryโ€ he mentioned.

On the other hand, all members grow working together and help them boost their self-confidence performing on stage.

โ€œBe humble, kasi may mga times na kahit sobrang galing mo kung hindi ka man marunong magpakumbaba, wala kang kwenta,โ€ Christian stated.

The experiences and learnings that they have acquired as a band is the thing that they treasured.

Despite boasting distinct personalities, they have the same interest that keeps them united, and that is their love performing on stage, and working toward earning an electrical engineer license.

Furthermore, their passion and dedication performing on stage lies in their system. The lively crowd, sparkling lights, and sterling musical instruments will be in their hearts.

Fashion brings class and comfort to a person, the way we dress up for ourselves is also the way we want to feel or express ourselves. Styling ourselves also gives a message to others. We have different tastes and styles depending on our mood and personality. Even on washdays in school, we have the freedom to choose comfortable clothes to wear, and it is important to know, understand, and respect each and everyoneโ€™s outfit because we have different bases on dressing up.

Featured in this article is Mr. , a student at Bicol University College of Science (BUCS), under the college of Computer Science. He creates and dresses stylish OOTDs during washdays called Old Money style, which he also does content creation on every old money outfit he chooses to wear to give ideas to others and a way to achieve his dream to become a super star.

Old money style is a kind of fashion that shows timeless elegance, sophistication, and class. It also reflects a classic sense of fashion, or also so-called โ€œtito outfitsโ€. Old money fits are those tucked shirts or polos, loafers, well-ironed pants/trousers/clothing, etcโ€ฆ which are also common to see being worn by old people. The elegance of well-blended colors helps the overall fit attract attention from others.

โ€œFashion ay isang stepping stone or instrumento sa pag express ng mga sarili natin, kumbaga thereโ€™s a connection between our feelingsโ€, Erjay says.

Looking back, he can really say that there are a lot of things that have changed now compared to his old self. He explains that before, he was really a big guy without any care for his body, he feels like every person that sees him is also judging himโ€”his looks and his style, to the point that he doesnโ€™t have any confidence left. With these situations, it pushes him to change himself to become a better person. What happened to him really changed his perspective in life, to be fit and to regain his confidence and peace of mind, and seeing his clothes fit him again gives him excitement and happiness. He uses this as an opportunity and inspiration to change for the better.

To feel relaxed for the whole day, he starts it by wearing relaxing clothes with a class. He always wanted to look elegant every time he dressed for himself even though there were times in school he was mistakenly called a professor or a teacher. These situations made his day more good and funny at the same time, as he really doesn't mind because the fits really gives him comfort and elegance as well.

It is somehow hard for him to shoot since he only has minimal knowledge when it comes to shooting and editing videos. For now, he is shy to call himself a content creator because of his small number of followers, but he already gained thousands of views on his videos and is noticed by some brands and popular content creators also.

It is a great stepping stone for him to achieve and plan his next step in reaching what he dreamed for. He is so grateful because even though he still has a small range of followers, there are people who admire his outfits and that really boosts and pushes him to create more videos. For now, he is carefully learning and observing some processes on how he will achieve and grow a wider audience and exploring more techniques and styles in creating videos that are pleasing to his viewers.

Erjay considers this fashion as pure passion, and he has a dream to become a super star. He is hoping for continuous growth in the fashion industry, and to be part of Pitti people; those people who are part of the fashion fair of Pitti Uomo wherein you can showcase classic and elegant styles. It is a good thing for him to start discovering and exploring more in line with fashion in this young age. He is also grateful to have a family and friends who are very supportive of him in achieving his dream.

Nickell Alexandra Dioneda Bailon, a graduate of Bachelor of Arts in Communication at Bicol University (BU) batch 2022, and currently a Communications Officer at World Wide Fund for Nature Philippines โ€“ Donsol Field Office, says that she thinks of herself as a budding DIY cosplayer who manages to ace her cosplans by using personal crafting skills to upcycle and transform normal things into cosplay material. According to her, โ€œthe cosplay world is very flexible and it's about expressing your joy over something you loveโ€. Her cosplays are all hand painted, crafted, and thrifted and it makes it more meaningful for her as she sees her costumes take shape by her own hands. Like every other cosplayer, she puts in a lot of love and work into making her cosplans come true and she thinks that is wonderful.

She started her closet cosplays or mini cosplays back in 2018, with DIY cosplays of Clary Fray from Mortal Instruments and Moana, incorporating DIY skills with a bit of digital editing. But her first all-out cosplay for an actual convention was just this year. It brings her a different kind of bliss as it makes her feel more connected to herself. She was hesitant at first, being a little on the chubby side and all that, but she figured, why would she stoop to other people's expectations and sacrifice what makes her feel good?

โ€œTo hell with standards, cosplay is celebrating what you love with creativity. This means that I'm constantly improvising and improving my skills and resourcefulness too. And finally, the community and sense of belonging and cosplay is a very immersive art form that also brings you into a community where you can mingle with your fellow fans and bring joy to everyone who sees youโ€ - Ms. Bailon

This hobby allows her to be a different person outside of life's usual rhythm, and it's just exciting for her to think about it. Mainly her passion for books and anime is what she got into cosplaying.

She likes to think that a big part of her was built with the words and phrases of her favorite characters and what better way to honor this is to dress up as them. Moreover, it amazes her that cosplay can get her closer to people who share the same love for things like she does. Thus, it gives her a sense of belonging. She wanted that for so long and she found it in joining conventions.

The first convention in full cosplay happened this year at Hobbyist Con 2023. She cosplayed as Konan from Naruto. According to her, it was an impulse decision; she decided to rent a costume from a dear friend at the last minute because her first supposed costume was incomplete. She was so giddy about it. Arriving at the venue seemed surreal because she was finally "blending in'' with the cosplay crowd that she wanted to join for so long. People approached her for photos, and she especially loved the way that she instantly became friends with everyone, posing and laughing with each other. Her most memorable event at cosplay was when someone recognized her character. Moreso, when they get excited about it. She remembers doing a casual closet cosplay of Sakura and while she was heading down an escalator, someone exclaimed "yo dude it's sakura". Her cosplay was very lowkey, mind you, but it still got the reference. It's just a fun experience to be recognized and even appreciated, especially the kids who point and giggle and interact.

โ€œI had to face a few truths before I started, like weight and height among other things. I want to be carefree and appreciative of everything, and I want to be welcoming and open to opportunities. I refer to myself as a "Medyo Cosplayer" as a joke, but it's still very cool to see things take shape in my hands and I feel in control. I see myself as a work in progress, but also as artโ€, Ms. Bailon said.

She added that her future plans on how she will unveil herself more in cosplaying are more cosplays of chaotic and complicated characters. Her next big one is a character from a game/series, and it is going to be her first time to cosplay a character with such personality which she looks forward to.

โ€œAnd as I said before, cosplay is an art form that I truly love, and with this, I'm going full speed ahead. I want to be able to look back and say that I got to dress up as this character, and I loved every minute of it and slayedโ€, Ms. Bailon concluded.

Kuti-Kuti by Casey is a small business owned by KC Jane Borras, a 22-year old graduate of Bicol University College of Education (BUCE) with a degree in Secondary Education Major in Social Studies. Her heart lies in the world of creativity, where she finds joy in crafting, painting, and organizing. Sheโ€™s also quite skilled in crocheting, resin pieces, and bead-making. But what truly drives her is her love for exploring and appreciating the aesthetic wonders in everything around her.

๐—™๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐—ต ๐—ฆ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜

The name โ€˜Kuti-Kutiโ€™ draws its inspiration from the Bicol word that translates to being crafty. Growing up, Borras often heard people comment on her being into arts and crafts, like โ€œmahiligun ka magkuti-kutiโ€ or โ€œmakuti-kution kaโ€, sparking her interest in making detailed and intricate pieces of art. Borrasโ€™ motivation for her business came from her fondness for creativity, crafting, painting, and organizing, which started when she was young. Her deep interest in collecting recycled materials, such as plastic cups, boxes, cans, and broken glasses, paved the way for her unique creative ideas and turning them into something more functional and sensible.

โ€œAs a small business owner, my main priorities have always been producing top-quality products and creating a memorable brand for my customers. Over these past two years, I've consistently strived to deliver exceptional service, ensuring that I never disappoint any of my valued customers,โ€ Borras said.

๐—ช๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ธ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—”๐—ฟ๐˜

She also claimed that providing the best quality she could do to her clients and not only meeting their expectations were her greatest accomplishments by far. To expound, she then said that she dedicates her utmost effort to โ€œcreate precisely what they desireโ€ because of the trust her clients put in her, and it is her โ€œunwavering commitment to never disappoint,โ€ Borras explained.

She also stated that she is aware of the competition in the local business market, and how it is a normal occurrence in the business landscape, which pushes small businesses like hers to be more innovative and thrive. She is currently in constant exploration for effective strategies to deliver unique value to her customers.

Despite her dedication to her business, she also faced significant challenges. She specifically mentioned the difficulty of having scoliosisโ€”a condition that causes back painโ€”while managing pending and incoming orders. Her condition impacts her productivity altogether and limits the orders that come in. Due to these, Borras prioritizes self-care and adequate rest.

Being a local small business owner has a big, positive impact on society, the local economy, and the owner's fulfillment in both their personal and professional lives. Small businesses have an essential function in promoting economic growth and community well-being as well as the structure and vibrancy of communities. Being a local small business owner has its gratifications, but it also has its share of difficulties. It takes careful preparation, flexibility, and a strong dedication to the business to overcome these obstacles. To successfully overcome these challenges, small business entrepreneurs frequently need to look for assistance and resources, such as guidance, partnership opportunities, and government initiatives.

โ€œOne of the most important lessons I've learned since I embarked on my small business journey is the need to prioritize relationships with our customers. They serve as the backbone and the cornerstone of our success, and without their support, small businesses like ours would struggle to thrive," Borras said when asked regarding her biggest lesson so far.

With her two-year journey in Kuti-Kuti, she now understands the significance of being passionate about what she does. Establishing and maintaining a business requires a lot of strength and determination, so it is critical that our motivation in business stems from the heart. To the people considering starting their own business, she offered the following words:

โ€œMy advice is simple: trust yourself. At the beginning of your journey, it can be challenging and tough to earn the trust of others in your businessโ€”no one will trust you, someone will doubt youโ€”but it all starts with having confidence in your own abilities. Trust me, put your million trust in yourself, and success will naturally follow.โ€
When asked about her plans for the future, Borras shared that she has โ€œseveral upcoming goals.โ€ She discussed the possible expansion of her business and how to target a larger audience. Borras is also considering collaborating with other local shops and cafes, which will allow her products to be featured along with her other services. She is now working towards having a physical store conveniently located next to her house.

Kyle Andrei O. Atienza, is a 2nd year-student of BS in Meteorology at Bicol University-College of Science (BUCS), is an aspiring cosplayer in Legazpi City, and the incumbent President of Bicol University Otaku Circle would describe himself with the motto he always been using with his cosplay persona โ€” โ€œBe your own idiotโ€. He has been cosplaying for a year and a half now, it would be longer if he started in 2018 but due to reasons he did not start by then. โ€œI'm not really in it to be popular or anything since I am just doing it as a fun hobby, attention is an unavoidable part of the whole deal.โ€, he stated. He just likes the thought of dressing as characters from the very niche thing he enjoys. He does not really mind if he does not get that attention from many but there is something special about being dressed up as a character where it is not as mainstream, but a few know, and they all just gather as a little circle and geek out about it.

๐˜พ๐™ค๐™ช๐™ง๐™–๐™œ๐™š

Bicol University Otaku Circle or BUOC for short, a University Based Organization, is what he would call a haven in the university. The organization is a place for weebs like him to express their passion for Otaku culture along with other students at Bicol University. His message to the members is โ€œKeep going and step up when you're given opportunitiesโ€. To future members, โ€œLove the organization as much as you love being a weeb.โ€ As the President of the said UBO, he looks forward to people who share the same interests and matters relating to the Otaku culture, hence their name. It could be inside the university or even outside. There will be some work like any other organization, but the people are supportive and will help each other when those times come.

The first convention he joined as a cosplayer was Anigaiden X. He cannot contain his excitement as well as his nervousness since he was just new at cosplay, but he tried to go out and do his best and saw the event in a different perspective since he only went before as a con-goer. โ€œOf course, at the end of the event, there were bodily pains but I was happy.โ€ he said. During Anigaiden XI, he initially planned on having it as his last event because he considered quitting cosplay altogether by that point. He went there dressed up as Yuri Ayato, a character from YariBu and went about the day and took pictures with people and met wonderful companions. He pointed out that, โ€œit gave me a reason not to quit, and here we are now.โ€ Mr. Atienza also concluded that, โ€œAs long as I am given the time and have enough to support it, I will certainly see myself doing it for a very long time.โ€
