This is Staqeya, the Lone Wolf of the Lone Wolf of Tl’ches, (or Discovery Island) carved by good friend and artist Kent Laforme Artist. Sacred to the local indigenous tribes, Staqeya was tragically shot and killed by a hunter not long after he swam back to the mainland. The void in this sculpture points directly toward Tl’ches where the Lone Wolf once roamed, and for me, represents the bullet that ultimately killed the wolf.

Credit for aligning the stars for this shot to even happen fully go to fellow photographer, good friend and mastermind behind it all Joel Rushworth 🤯📸✨

I had the honour of capturing the 2023 Hungry Hearts culinary competition that raised over $215,000 for Our Place Society. A new record, and enough to ensure that Our Place can afford the protein needed this year for the 1,200 meals they serve each day to those in need.

This year’s event featured eight culinary teams who battled it out to win the hearts of over 200 mouth-watering guests, where Zambri's, SYSCO Foods and the Fairmont Empress took the top honours.

The event also featured a brave young man who won my heart for sharing his inspiring journey, rising from the ashes to where he stands tall today.

I dedicate this video to him and the good folks at Our Place who support those who struggle with homelessness, mental health challenges, substance use issues, the working poor, and the impoverished elderly.

If you haven’t been to a Hungry Hearts event just yet, I encourage you to keep an eye out for next year’s gala event in the fall of 2024.

Odd Fellows Disc Golf '23, Part 2: This year was truly all about the love. Even with a wet start, it was heartwarming to see all the happiness from players and volunteers. We are still working on tallies but fundraising brought in about $18,300 and $17,515 from player entry fees. Huge thanks to all of our sponsors for donating needed funds for www.crisis.ca and donating such wonderful prizes, and to our core crew of Stu, Andy, Tara, Russ G, and Ron Kerr. Also special props to John and Angie Hircock and Russ Campbell for their amazing pig roast and Russ (assisted by Kev) for making those amazing trophies. Alex Austin also deserves a special mention for stepping up to help with ops yesterday. We are all winners today, and now the cleanup stage begins. Best bundle of sticks ever!

A year ago today, Russia launched its brutal and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine. In that time, over 40,000 Ukrainians have been injured in the war, a third of whom are estimated to be amputees.

Earlier this year, Victoria Hand Project (VHP) completed a successful pilot project in war-torn Ukraine where one of VHP's brave team members travelled to two partner sites across the country to conduct initial training, set up equipment, and demonstrate fittings by providing 5 amputees in need with its game-changing prosthetic hands.

I'm looking for a little star to help save the planet from the climate crisis. Ideally, a girl between 5-10 years of age with black or dark brown hair and a similar haircut as the female below, (hair can be longer in the back too, but bangs preferred).

No speaking parts or previous acting experience needed, just the ability to stand in front of a camera for a few minutes and flip over a sign to reveal a keyword in this NFP short film.

If you are a parent of such a child, I would need about an hour of both of your time to join me and 4 more sets of kids and their parents for a video shoot next week starting at 7 pm at a beachfront location in Victoria, with a date still to be determined between July 18th and the 21st.

CrackerJackFlash turns five today 🎂✨and I couldn't be prouder.
Back in Calgary AB, my company CrackerJack offered clients marketing solutions via strategic concepting, graphic design and copywriting. After moving to Victoria, BC, I was inspired to pick up a proper camera for the first time (what's an ISO?!) to capture Vancouver Island's beauty. I fell in love with photography!
Shortly thereafter, a few of my shots got some recognition, including a feature in National Geographic's Your Shot (Moby), not to mention being published in Canadian Geographic (Calgary Library).
These wins inspired me to add photography, and later video production to my marketing arsenal, and voila, CrackerJackFlash was born!
5 years later, with the ability to offer my clients a more holistic marketing experience, I've not only been able to help my clients grow their businesses, I've also helped a few of them keep their doors open throughout the devastating impacts of Covid-19 closures.

With the recent purchases of CJ*F prints, as well as kind donations from family, friends and even folks whom I have never met before, is pleased to share that we raised $1,159.50 last week to help support a family escape war-torn Ukraine and shelter them in Bulgaria for the next few months. 🇨🇦✌️🇺🇦

Heartfelt thanks to those who have contributed to this and the countless other humanitarian efforts seen around the world. As expressed in a letter of gratitude shared in CJ*F's latest blog post, donations such as these have gone beyond providing basic needs and temporary shelter. They have also boosted morale enabling a family such as this one to know they aren't alone, that they are loved and deeply cared for.

Here is what our dear friend’s father, Vasyl and his family are up against:

Vasyl is a retired Ukrainian boat captain who was hoping to enjoy his retirement peacefully in Mykolaiv. Mykolaiv is a strategic port city in southeast Ukraine.

The Ukrainian army and residents have done a remarkable job of keeping the city from the Russian invaders. It is one of the new epicentres of the brutal war as the Russians retreat from Kiyv and focus on southern and eastern Ukraine. Mykolaiv is under intense shelling day and night and is the scene of intense fighting.

The residents are remarkably resilient and proud, but the level of danger is rapidly making staying untenable. A missile strike last week on the governor’s office killed 12 people, wounded 33 others, and destroyed the large regional government building just 200m from Vasyl’s home. A shell exploded a few days ago right in front of their home, destroying a vehicle. The assault is likely to increase as Russia focuses on capturing or destroying this city.

Funds raised from the sale of these prints would assist Vasyl, his wife and his mother in seeking temporary safety in Western Ukraine or Bulgaria. Our goal is to raise enough to rent a home for three to five people for a couple of months in a safer area, and your kind generosity would mean the world to them.
