OUT NOW: SS 020 VIRGIN IDOL "VIRGIN IDOL"

Virgin Idol's debut can be summed up in three words: Satan, s*x, and sorcery. Their firey brand of Satanic heavy metal mixed with glam metal sleaze feels like a Greatest Hits compilation of the 1980's. Take the big riffs of Shout at the Devil, the shrieking of King Diamond/Rob Halford, and top it off with some of the most insane shredding you've heard in decades. For some, the oldschool metal revival is just another trend. There are no trends here. Seekers of true metal, kneel down and pray to the Virgin Idol.

Thanks to MetalBite for reviewing Crown of Worms' Sorcery Rites!
"The pretty complex songs reveal a rather unusual black thrash approach and songs like 'Angelrust' offer some truly strong parts. Among other things, the aforementioned piece scores with two blast beats motivated sequences that drags the whole piece into a vortex of perdition. Maybe this is not the most accessible album, but a few outstanding parts provide the listener orientation. Especially the straight, speedy rhythms open the gate to the sound cosmos of the band. 'Under Blackened Wings' holds some of them and from time to time this is what I want to hear when it comes to black thrash: a simple yet thrilling outburst of primitive aggression."

OUT NOW: SS 017 CROWN OF WORMS "SORCERY RITES"

From the very beginning of this album, I knew I was in for another dark journey with Crown of Worms. Full disclosure, I came into this as a Crown of Worms fan. Not only is their music the exact kind of rock-throwing thrash-spurting black metal I enjoy, but their last full-length "Impalers March" was a favorite of mine when it came out.

Obviously I'm going to gravitate toward a dark, dirty heavy metal band that sounds like this. "Impalers March" featured a song called "Bitchslappin' (The Holy W***e)" which 100% helped push them to the top of the heap. It was a good marriage of over-the-top Satanic wackiness and actually good heavy metal.

The new album "Sorcery Rites" is exactly what it says: sorcery rites. The band digs up Bathory and Hellhammer but regurgitates them through the mouth of a possessed bulldog. Imagine if Hellhammer was exposed to the same amount of gamma rays the Incredible Hulk got exposed to. I mean, holy s**t. There's alot more anger in Crown of Worms than was in early black metal, and you can hear it seething off the top like the steam rolling off the top of fresh roadkill. It's that pungent and offensive. I imagine if Crown of Worms was say, a dead rabbit, it'd be one that was full of maggots baking in the sun. It's that kind of anger in the vocals. The guitar work sounds like irradiated snakes slithering around in a keg of beer; the bass sounds like a dilapidated bulldozer, along with the steamrolling drums... still running, still old, still crushing everything in its path. The old days returning again.

The entire album has a beautiful live, raw, 80s cassette sound to it; medium rare. Not so raw that an idiot couldn't enjoy it, but not overproduced enough that an idiot would think it's the best thing ever. It's the kind of s**t I like. Black metal devoid of idiots.
This album is more powerful than the last one and I will go out on a limb here and say this album is more powerful than all 5,000+ metal albums that came out last year, and the (surely) 2,000+ that have come out this year already. Crown of Worms don't really take any prisoners, but they have one anyway: Me. I'm a prisoner of the rock n' roll contained within their recordings, and the prison they built is exactly the cage people like me enjoy.

I guess the best way to describe the sound of "Sorcery Rites" is this. Wizards resurrect the co**se of Marilyn Monroe, who immediately begins killing and fu***ng everything in sight. This powerful Marilyn zombie stalks about like any other zombie but with purpose: to find and resurrect Jayne Mansfield in order to take her head as an oracle. After ripping the half-demolished skull out from the tomb, zombie Marilyn brings the world a new prophecy.
A prophecy in which there is no future for humanity except fire. Fire blazing all over the Earth until there is nothing left. Upon learning this Marilyn decides to go back to the crypt, still carrying the head, cradling it like a baby. This album gets a 1000/10.

Glowing review of Saqrarunaband's Under the Light of Mountains by State of Guitars!
"What makes the seven songs special is the sophisticated melodic composition. „Bethink Of The Vulture Bloodshed“ for example is midtempo in general like HFTS, yet the kick drum is triggered extremely fast, with a particular gleam of Death like Dark Age. This melodic sweetness is in „Flight Of A Black Serpent“ as well, which was released priorly and makes think Chaos Over Cosmos, while the screams echoe from the cliffs."

OUT NOW: SS 018 SAQRARUNA "UNDER THE LIGHT OF MOUNTAINS"
Saqraruna's "Under the Light of Mountains" takes me back to the days when black metal still had some street cred.
Before bands like Gorgoroth flopped around like waterless fish searching for Satanic riffs on the floor of an alcohol-soaked pub; riffs that got lost in the shuffle and stress of trying to cater to an audience consisting of pop culture fanatics.
Before Dark Funeral lost the entire plot and fell all over themselves trying to recapture some of that old Swedish black magic; magic turned sour by a need to pay off some longstanding debt and a heavy longing to be accepted by the lowest common denominator in a quest for endless cheese.
I don't know what more can be said about this album. It's what my ears needed to hear in this future time where black metal is just something we reminisce about because no one makes it anymore.
Saqraruna takes everything about black metal you love and wraps it up into a true black ball of rolling, glowing, Hell-energy. A ghastly, ghostly trip into the old church, with swirling anti-melodies forming a lightning strike of darkness. It's rare for a new band to get my ears back to the old days and it's even rarer for a new band to make me reminisce fondly about those old days.
The feeling you felt the first time you heard black metal is here to re-introduce itself in "Under the Light of Mountains."

A huge thank you to Hate Meditations for their fantastic review of Saqrarunaband's upcoming album Under the Light of Mountains, out this Friday March 18th.

"But within their chosen remit, Saqraruna work in striking thematic shifts whilst retaining a distinctive atmosphere throughout. Their emotive range is far broader than their European antecedents, sounding positively reflective by the end of the nine minute epic ‘Flight of a Black Serpent’. Superficially this almost sounds like post metal. But the key difference being that the emotional payoff that Saqraruna deliver feels earned at this point, properly contextualised in an album fraught with jeopardy, conflict, tension, and release."

New Sorcery Rites review from Metal 1on1!
"Music and lyrics that take the listener's innocent soul on a journey about an endless cyclic war that brings devastating hordes to take revenge on their holy captors. Rites of possession give place to a killing spree, and pledging allegiance to obscurity becomes the only way of trespassing the boundaries of time and death."

"The music itself is delivery of creating this hellish extreme spectrum of rich atmospheric black metal that maintains the aggression and intensity of raw black metal, which utilise integrated pre-Hispanic instruments to create a pagan sound with contrasting moods, dark and nebulous vibes capturing the imagination of the music/lyrics, spoken audio clips, slight doom vibes, dark verses, (a tint of) depressive atmosphere, furious & venomous instrumentation & vocals – which is provided by top-notch & relentless musicianship and craftsmanship and excellent black metal magic."

"(...) What I found was a long advance track named “Flight of a Black Serpent“. (...) This song creates a sweeping, panoramic atmosphere that’s both deeply melancholy and grand enough to put your heart in your throat, though the drums often pump like overdriven pistons and the tortured vocals seem larynx-ruining."

This week's SHADES OF BLACK column at our site is filled to the brim with music of dark, ravaging, and sweeping intensity (along with some captivating digressions). It includes a mix of singles and complete releases from these bands: KAMPFAR official (Norway), Svrm (Ukraine), BÂ’A (France), Svartsot (Denmark), THE SUN’S JOURNEY THROUGH THE NIGHT (UK), Saqrarunaband (Peru), Intus Mortem (Italy), BEELZEJUD (U.S.), and Archvile King (France).

Big thanks to Two Guys Metal Reviews for reviewing Saqraruna's Under the Light of Mountains!
"This is a thrilling record any way you slice it and it's a delight to really get lost in the bleak layers of Under The Light Of Mountains. There are few better examples of artists using black metal to directly address complicated histories, and this album seems like it can be a shining example of how to execute it on an extremely high level. Saqraruna have managed to be truly impressive on this album and the deeper I delve the more I am in awe with what they have done. Join me in revelling in the madness, this is black metal executed with a lust for something more."

Saqraruna - Flight of a Black Serpent Premiere
We are pleased to be able to bring you the official premiere of Flight of a Black Serpent, the first single from Peruvian atmospheric black metal act Saqrarunaband's upcoming album. Under the Light of Mountains is set for release on March 18th through Super Sargasso in partnership with Cave Dweller Productions.
Flight of a Black Serpent is a powerful atmospheric black metal track that uses equal parts aggression and depressive atmosphere to discuss colonial oppression in Peru. The music both mourns the loss of pre-colonial peoples' culture and displays the anger at this loss simultaneously.

OUT NOW: SS 016 LORD ALFRED "THE LORD COMETH, THE 'HORDE GOETH"

What if Lemmy joined Venom, Cronos started Motorhead, Ted Nugent burned down some churches and then stabbed Eric Clapton?
Chuck Berry is dressed up like King Diamond; King Diamond is instead a David Bowie impersonator and never even made it to a big stage. In fact, in this new reality, King Diamond is just a Vegas act called King Stardust and Chuck fu**in' Berry is doing a falsetto Satanic gimmick while playing guitar. B.B. King is in Anthrax instead of Scott Ian. Scott Ian doesn't exist. It's a new universe.
This is the universe Lord Alfred exists in.
Floating out amongst what humans would say is a sky, but others may call the ground, Lord Alfred is teetering on the brink of the edge of the universe. The guitars tremble in a hazy psychedelic mushroom cloud of terror. The drummer's doing old rhythm and blues freakouts.
The vocalist is laying out lines of co***ne for his dog, while singing. He's doing this because the dog asked him to. This is clearly a universe where dogs do more coke than humans. The lead guitarist is studying old blues records. Every lead guitarist should. Then you find out this is all just one dude, playing every instrument, and doing the vocals.
Your brain blows up. Your mom puts her cat in a blender. Some guy's grandpa throws his own sc***um off the roof of his house.
Musicians commit su***de, knowing they'll never be able to achieve this s**t.
This is the Lord Alfred dimension. It is a better dimension. The entirety of heavy metal became stale over twenty years ago. The black hole that has birthed Lord Alfred is a gift from the gods.
