This holiday home exudes a light, bright, and happy touch, evoking that buoyant feeling of being on vacation.

This home by Vasundhara Sampath of Phylosophy Design Studio () is artfully daring. Distinctive with its predominantly grey colour palette and use of artistic décor elements, this 13,200 sq ft duplex home was built for a fun-loving couple with two energetic boys. They love to entertain and wanted their new home to be a unique space where their playful spirit could shine through. Embracing the opportunity for creativity, they encouraged Vasundhara to experiment with edgy elements that had never been done before. Open to suggestions and eager for innovation, the couple’s primary desire was for the home to have open areas with a bold, contemporary look.

First there was Ambrogio, then came Amanda — cute as buttons, these butler tables had our heart with their playful take on form and function. Thereafter, Francesco Favaretto () decided to fuse them, to create the best of both worlds in the form of Together, which is one half Ambrogio, and the other Amanda. What makes it even better is that it’s made from a plastic mix of polyethylene and Ecoallene, a 100% recyclable material from Tetra pack boxes, which otherwise would end up in incinerators or landfills.

Myriad stories are woven into the fabric of this Gurugram home. In planning this 22,970 sq ft abode, architect Abhimanyu Dalal () has reimagined its spaces in a way that let its residents and their lives shine. Each room of the four-storey bungalow personifies a distinct personality, with common areas meant for mingling. “We laid out the house around the four generations that reside here, providing personalised space for each member of the family,” says Dalal.” For the interior design, the Bammi family wanted uniqueness conveyed through crafts and materials,” says Amrita Guha, founding partner of Untitled Design Consultants (), who was roped in to style the interiors as Dalal moulded its architectural blueprint.

The home unfolds like a book encased in stones from around the world, bookmarked with one-of-a-kind masterpieces from across India, and furniture crafted by Furgonomics for the space. The home, with its many moods and characters unfolds as a microcosm of light, life, and artistry – the perfect personification of its residents’ dreams and desires.

Our cover feature this issue is this soulful home by Ashiesh Shah () that unfolds like an interesting story punctuated with art and fresh bursts of colour. Inspired by the undulating curves of the bay, it is as inward-looking as it is outward-embracing.

The sinuous lines of the furniture travel all the way to the ceiling, punctured by beautifully curated works of art. The living spaces flow from one to another, semi-formal to formal, creating intimate pockets that celebrate community and conversations. It’s hard to tell where the art ends and the furniture begins, such is the artistry of Atelier Ashiesh Shah (). “Homes should be curated not decorated, because when you decorate it’s simply driven by visual aesthetic and is unintentional, there is no purpose or story,” he says.

“It’s one of the most colourful projects I have done especially when you consider the space, which is so intimate,” smiles Ashiesh Shah (@ashieshshah, @ashieshshahatelier) as he takes us through the expansive, art-filled apartment in Mumbai. Designing for friends has its merits, for one, you know how they live — the tiny things that you have seen them do, how their life unfolds in their homes even when they don’t tell you, “I am glad we are still friends,” laughs Ashiesh, “they wanted a home, where they could be themselves, walk around barefoot in their home, put their feet up on the couch — relaxed living with people and objects they love.” As the home transitions from one form to another, one space to the other and one mood to many, it is evident Ashiesh has an intuitive sense of what makes a home work; how it engages with, and adapts to its people, and how it is not just a reflection of its inhabitants but an extension of them, in fact. I am often asked what my favourite decor style is? Whether I align with wabi-sabi or hygge? Do I like light-washed spaces or richly layered rooms? To me, it’s like someone asking me what kind of music I like listening to? It may be an unpopular opinion but it all depends on what mood I am in, whose company I am in, which place I am at... So why should decor be any different? To me, what I like in terms of my home varies hugely with seasons, it transitions from happy hues to moody mellow to deliciously dark. So for our August issue, we decided to explore the many moods of a home.
