ICONS~~~~
MEET Jill Anguaya owner of Tickled Pink Ottawa
How many years have you been in business?
31 YEARS!!! as a self employed entrepreneur,
and 13 as owner at Tickled Pink Ottawa
🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸

Why choose the ByWard Market ?
It kind of chose me! I was operating 2 other retail locations, one in Westboro, another on Sparks St, when my husband, who operated an outdoor business in the ByWard Market at the time, was approached with an offer to buy Tickled Pink. I originally said no, lol. Long story short, here I am :)
🌸🌸

As an icon of industry, who inspires and motivates you to continue on your path?
My husband and his family- they are all self employed, hardworking people who never give up.
🌸🌸

What should people know about the Byward market ?
It's not just for tourists! We love locals here, and invite them to visit- most shops and restaurants are open 7 days a week, and there's more parking options than people may think....

If you could tell the Mayor of Ottawa, one way he could improve things for small business in the Byward market what would it be?

Talk to us! To listen to and act on the concerns and suggestions from small businesses. There is a wealth of lived experience among the shopkeepers of the ByWard Market- heed our words!
🌸🌸

Name three local businesses that you shop at /order services from or frequent
The Tea Store, Saslove's Meat Market - Byward Market location and Milk Shop

This summer what are two amazing things that your business will be showcasing?
We will be introducing a much anticipated line of temporary tattoos- all affordable art by real artists. It's the number one requested item for a little while now, so I am really excited to have found the perfect collection :) We also have a growing selection of one of a kind, locally handmade cards that are gorgeous- I hear we will have some tulip inspired ones in store very soon!
🌸🌸

What is the one piece of advice you would share?
Always look at the stats! Where we are often encouraged to 'follow our dreams' and be passionate, I would also say look at the numbers, and remove emotion from the equation (for a minute!) when considering important business decisions.

A Beautiful Thank You. ~~~~~~🌺
We hosted the Power Lunch at the National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts on International Women's Day, and when I create events , it is always very important to me that the entire kitchen brigade is recognized for their hard work.

On March 8, we asked Executive Chef Kenton Lr to bring his brigade to the stage and create a beautiful presentation to the staff member who ran to his side, when he collapsed on the line with a massive heart attack last year.

Her name is Elise Droillard and she is a powerhouse of trained energy who quickly jumped into action. This woman is a brilliantly talented cook on the line at the NAC, and was able to immediately help Chef Kenton, while ambulances were on their way.

There wasn't a dry eye in the house as Elise explained the importance of team work and the importance of working together in unison. She spoke eloquently and beautifully. A very moving and super empowering speech, as her team stood with her. A fabulous reminder that we are stronger when we align and support one another.

ANOTHER BEAUTIFUL part of this story:
Thought the donation of so many businesses at our events, we have incredible gifts and prizes . There were a pair of size 7 Blundstone, steel toe boots in a box that were gifted by Kiddie Kobbler Stittsville / littlesoles.ca Joanne Rodgers.

An executive decision was made by me, that we would gift the boots to Elise. We had to find her first. She had returned to the line, and the boots were rushed over to her with the hope that they would fit like a glove. These boots are perfect for long days cooking and serving up and they are steel toe too!

Word quickly came back from the line that the boots were beyond perfect and she was overjoyed and thrilled to receive.

In fact, the day before Elise had been looking to purchase new boots as hers were falling apart ,in fact she had saved up to buy.

The story goes......as always......thank you to the power of positive and the absolute importance of working in tandem with good people. You are able to build beautiful movements.

THANK YOU Nelson Borges Chef Connor McQuay & Guest
Chef Amanda Ray

THANK YOU to University of Ottawa Heart Institute
and to Lianne Laing for her continued support sharing info and educating about this world class facility here in Ottawa.

Thank you to our guests, guest speakers and our sponsors and to everyone who participated and helped created magic.

ICONS . Business Women of the ByWard Market.
Meet MARIE. Indigenous Business Owner of Vanity Piercing.

1. How many years have you been in business?
I opened Vanity in June of 2018 !

2. Why choose the Byward market ?
The Byward Market is a great place to be seen by locals and tourists! I feel that as an indigenous bisexual woman it's important to take up that space and create an environment that is safe and welcoming to all so that each person can explore their individuality through the art of piercing and curating services.

3. As an icon of industry, who inspires and motivates you to continue on your path?
My grand-mother! She is a true force of nature. This woman has known challenges and hardships and has remained so kind, patient and loving. She is the definition of resilient and I aspire to be like her everyday.

4. What should people know about the Byward market ?
The Byward Market is filled with amazing women owned businesses that should be celebrated! Yes the restaurants are great here but there is so much more than that!

5. What are your top three things that you love to sell in your local business?
Jewelry, Curating Services and the best piercing experience there is!! We are all about the safest and best materials for fresh and healed piercings! From implant grade 14k to18k Solid Gold featuring genuine stones to Implant grade titanium with synthetic stones you won't believe your eyes when you see just how big of a selection we have! Our experienced staff are there to ensure the entire process is as smooth and personal as possible. From your first piercing to curating a whole new look for multiple piercings, we want to ensure the experience will always be one every single one of y'all deserves!

6. If you could tell the Mayor of Ottawa Mark Sutcliffe, one way he could improve things for small business in the Byward market what would it be?
Offering more grants and visibility to small businesses. That should be at the top of their list!

7. Name three local businesses that you shop at /order services from or frequent.
Flower to the People!!! I love these girls, their bouquets are absolutely exquisite and the workshops are so much fun!
The King Eddy is a place my staff and I go to often for brunch! The atmosphere, decor, food and the service make this place so enjoyable! Taco De Oro Ottawa is a go to for take out, their Barbacoa beef and Pork Al Pastor tacos are a personal fav of mine!

8. This summer what are two amazing things that your business will be showcasing?
New pastel coloured gemstones and a lot of rose gold jewelry. Gotta make sure to stay in trend with the seasons!

9. What is the one thing that makes you super happy to own an incredible small local business?
Being able to create a clean and safe place for all as well as creating a long term career for my staff that ensures financial stability and growth.

10.When someone tells you no you say……It depends on the circumstances. If it has to do with my career and business I'll ask why. This way I'll be able to better understand if I need to change my approach or move towards something better.

11. This International Women’s Month what is the one piece of advice you would share?
Believe in yourself more than anybody else. Push yourself because no one is going to do it for you and celebrate your victories no matter how small they are, you'll thank yourself later for doing so!

12. Chocolate or Vanilla?
Chocolate all day baby!

One way you choose to indulge in self. After an insanely busy day? Drinking a good red wine, sitting on the couch next to my dog Zeek. Now that's a good end of day right there.

ICONS :Business Women LIGHTING UP THE ByWard Market.
Includes this iconic shop Flower to the People
And you can order up your flowers through Uber Eats!!!! ?

🌷🌺🌷🌺Located at 21 Murray Street in the core of the Byward Market, Flower to the People is redefining the florist experience, courtesy of the visionary duo, Krista Sharpe and Caity Greer. Far from ordinary, this enchanting store boasts sky-high ceilings, where rustic, brightly painted doors are perched 15 feet above the floor.

Am I in a flower shop in Ottawa? 🌷🌺🌷🌺
Or am I in a Mediterranean courtyard?

The air is thick with the heady scent of blooms, offering a lush, sublime journey for all your senses. Breathe.

The store is a green and blue paradise, boasting an eclectic array of plants catering to all preferences and price points. Lawyer Brenda Hollingsworth recently found herself charmed by an easy-care table plant, a unique specimen that set itself apart from the usual fare. For those looking to enhance their spaces, the store offers chic planters that seamlessly blend with all types of contemporary decor. 🌷🌺🌷🌺

Beyond greenery, Flower to the People shines with its floral offerings. While classic blooms are beautiful and available, the store's magic lies in its bespoke, hand-tied arrangements, tailored to individual whims. Wrapped in hip black paper, these are bouquets you are proud to present to the important people in your life. 🌷🌺🌷🌺
Want something with a longer vase-life? Consider a preserved bouquet. These tasteful and charming arrangements offer a low maintenance touch of natural beauty.

In a delightful twist, Brenda discovered the convenience of ordering custom bouquets via Uber Eats, a perfect complement to yummy delights from local eateries like the nearby King Eddy.

Catherine Landry's introduction to this botanical haven has unveiled a hidden gem in Bytown Market, captured by Stacey Stewart Photography captivating visuals. Flower to the People stands as a testament to the beauty and creativity flourishing within the historic Byward Market. If you haven’t been there, what are you waiting for? 🌷🌺🌷🌺

ICONS OF THE BYWARD MARKET!!!
MEET Mandy Gosewich of Stunning Fashion Accessories - Byward Market, Ottawa, Ontario ByWard Market

How many years have you been in business? I proudly opened up May 2013

> Why choose the Byward market ?
I am proudly 4th generation of my paternal family to be a ‘ merchant’ in the ByWard Market.
The history of not just my family but so many families I know I could not have thought of anywhere else.

> As an icon of industry, who inspires and motivates you to continue on your path?
My clients and the work ethics that were instilled in me by my parents.
I am determined to see it to the end despite Amazon and big box stores competition. This requires alot of tears & sleepless nights but its worth it!!

> What should people know about the Byward market ?
It is the heart of the Nations Capital where many who grew up here spent so much time here making memories. Despite bad press ( much of it unnecessary and embellished) the ByWard Market is rich in history, architecture & local businesses

> What are your top three things that you love to sell in your business?
Fashion + Accessories & Laughter ( the laughter is free 😉)

> If you could tell the Mayor of Ottawa, one way he could improve things for small business in the Byward market what would it be?

Dont get me started!!!

Mayor Sutcliffe & his teams need to recognize the ByWard Market needs & deserves the attention they have given/ give to Landsdowne including

*Less surveys and graphs and more action that does not require 100 meetings
* seasonal beautification including flowers, more planters, holiday decor
* permanent light instillations especially during the holiday season
*more art installations and giving the OSA students more walls, billboards to showcase their talent
*reduced parking fees & back to free parking on Sundays
*increased & efficient security ( i am going to use this as a platform to let people know EVERY city has problems with crime & homelessness especially post the pandemic. We are not the only ones nor the only area in the city)
*Sussex Drive, which is also the thoroughfare for dignitaries etc) should be vibrant, not just lampposts with flags
* Empty spaces should visually showcase other businesses and or local talent

> Name three local businesses that you shop at /order services from or frequent

ByWard Fruit Market
Paper Papier
Flower to the People

> This summer what are two amazing things that your business will be showcasing?
Always showcasing unique and eclectic Fashion + Accessories that are curated & tried on by me with woman of all ages in mind
As I always say, if I wont wear it, I wont bring it in

With over 45 years of experience I can make the most of 329 square feet that people love to walk into and say “ WoW”
A small space with a small window can be easily over looked and walked by!

When someone tells you no you say…….
Thats nice

> This International Women’s MONTH what is the one piece of advice you would share?
Never let ANYONE tell you that you cant do it because you are a women and dont have the security of being married
YOU have a tribe of women in your life and who you meet along the way who will continue to support, encourage, elevate and celebrate you during the good & the bad

> Chocolate or Vanilla?
Neither. Ginger or Black Licorice

> One way you choose to indulge in self. After an insanely busy day
The peacefulness & unconditional love from my pooch, Pearl, in my loft ( albeit on a busy street) and the beauty that surrounds me including always fresh flowers.

"ICONS OF THE BYWARD MARKET"
Championing local women in business with Sheshopslocal.ca
MEET Mandy Gosewich the powerhouse behind
Stunning Fashion Accessories - Byward Market, Ottawa, Ontario

"Nestled in the heart of Ottawa's vibrant ByWard Market, at 6 York Street, lies the gem of a boutique, Stunning!. Housed in a charming limestone building, this store may be small in footprint but is immense in style and substance. Opened in 2013 by the fashion-savvy Mandy Gosewich, Stunning! is a treasure trove of fashion and accessories that promises more than just a shopping experience; it offers a style revolution.

After years of experience in the fashion industry, Mandy has honed an exceptional ability to discern precisely what will suit her customers. The packed store is a canvas for Mandy's expertise, where she artfully selects the perfect piece for you, be it a skirt or a top, and then ingeniously styles it in ways that might surprise you. A sequined skirt paired with a distressed jean jacket and motorcycle boots?

Yep. Mandy makes unconventional combinations not only possible but essential."

Lawyer Brenda Hollingsworth and Stacey Stewart-- the talented eye behind Star Brand Photography-- left "Stunning!" with unique finds that speak volumes about Mandy's skill in catering to style preferences (and heights!) From a versatile houndstooth blazer to mineral wash palazzo pants Stacey dubbed "a national treasure", the range is breathtaking.

But "Stunning!" isn't just about clothes. The store boasts an exquisite and eclectic collection of jewelry and accessories, with pieces that are totally captivating. Brenda bought an amazing on-trend chain link necklace she has worn every day for a month. When Brenda selected an adorable black cap sleeved blouse and matching maxi skirt, Mandy’s guidance on styling, layering, and personalizing these pieces added an invaluable touch to the shopping experience. Would you know to attach multiple broaches to your skirt’s waist band to add interest? Now you do. Thanks to Mandy!

Stunning! is more than a boutique; it's a testament to personal style, where fashion is not just worn but lived. Mandy Gosewich's vision has created a space where creativity meets fashion, making "Stunning!" a must-visit for anyone looking for something uniquely theirs in Ottawa's ByWard Market."

"ICONS" ~~ Business Women ByWard Market
Caity Greer + Krista Sharpe Flower to the People are leading the way for a gorgeous flower revolution right here in the 613.

1. How many years have you been in business?
We have been in Business since April 2018.

2. Why choose the Byward market ?

We chose the byward market because we felt it was an underserved part of Ottawa for flower shops. Ottawa is pretty saturated with amazing florists, which is awesome, but we wanted to serve a community that didn't have much in the way of options for flowers and plants. We also just LOVE this community. It's so full of art and creativity and it's got heart. We wanted to build on that.

3. As an icon of industry, who inspires and motivates you to continue on your path?

We inspire each other mostly. Working together day in and day out, you start to become an intrical part of each other's lives. You become family and knowing someone that well, you become inspired by the way the other person navigates tough times and good times, stress, joy, well, life really. Both of us are warriors and we hold each other up. No matter what. Good days and bad. That is hard to find, not only in a business partner, but in another human being. That's pretty inspiring.

4. What should people know about the Byward market ?

It's THE BOMB!! It's so cool. It really is full of love and community. It's a place where people know your name and they commit to their tribe. It's filled with art and creative minds, great food, unique little small businesses where the owners take the time for you. They know your name. they know your story. Byward is an experience.

5. What are your top three things that you love to sell in your local business?

Flowers, Plants and a GREAT WORKSHOP! We just love what we do and we are so passionate about the joy we get to provide to people. Being the person who gets to be a small part of every love story that crosses our threshold, is pretty extraordinary and humbling. We are blessed and we love it.

6. If you could tell the mayor of Ottawa, one way he could improve things for small business in the Byward market what would it be?

Grants to help us in these trying times. Marketing initiatives. Start putting a SPOTLIGHT on everything that is GREAT about the market, not only talking about it when something bad happens. It's unfortunate that it has been cast in such a negative light over the past 4 years that people are starting to forget what makes it the 'HUB' of our nation's capital. The narrative HAS to CHANGE!

7. Name three local businesses that you shop at /order services from or frequent:
Heart and Crown Irish Pub - Ottawa
Stunning Fashion Accessories - Byward Market, Ottawa, Ontario, The King Eddy

8.This summer what are two amazing things that your business will be showcasing?

We are very excited to be a big sponsor for Light For Veterans 1st Annual Charity Golf Tournament. It is to help veterans and first responders when they transition out of service! This is a HUGE one for us and it is very close to home. We are doing full florals for this beautiful event and we cannot wait!!! The other thing we are excited about are our workshops! They are always a blast. We post them a month in advance on socials and in our newsletter!

9. What is the one thing that makes you super happy to own an incredible small local business?

Getting to know our people. We love them and they inspire us to keep on keeping on.

10. When someone tells you no you say…….

"Well then we are definitely going to do it!" or "Wanna make a bet?!"

11. This International Women’s Month, what is the one piece of advice you would share?

When you look in the mirror, YOU better like what you see. That's all that matters. Kindness and love always win.

12. Chocolate or Vanilla?
Did you say vodka or tequila?

ICONS ~ Celebrating business women in the ByWard Market.
Brenda Hollingsworth has taken an innovative approach to supporting local women owned business and created a social media collaboration which shines a bright light on these epic shopping destinations in the heart of the Nation's Capital.

Not only is Brenda championing this project but she is writing her experiences, meeting the owners and of course, shopping!

CHAMPAGNE ON THE TOP and BEER ON THE BOTTOM
"Frou Frou by Pat has been a shopping destination for women’s clothes and accessories in the ByWard market . Located at 159 York Street, just east of Dalhousie, there is plenty of metered street parking just at her doorstep. The cheery, yellow-stuccoed store is just as pretty from the outside as it is on the inside.

Owner Pat is a true ByWard market fixture. Pat was the longtime owner of Sassy Beads, a do-it-yourself beading and jewelry making destination, which Pat admits she really misses. She keeps her beading skills honed by offering jewelry repair on site. When Sassy Beads closed, she worked for the previous owners at Froufrou until she took over . Since then, there has been no looking back.

Froufrou by Pat is a unique and eclectic mix of pieces that defies strict categorization. Looking for edgy up-cycled concert tees? You’ll find them at FrouFrou by Pat. Looking for practically elegant cruise wear? Yep, it’s there. What about sculptured faux leather dresses and tunics? Pat’s collection has something for everyone, including special pieces you never knew you needed. The store’s second level boats a carefully curated vintage collection."

Brenda and Stacey adored shopping with Pat’s encouragement. Pat’s advice for creating an outfit that looks and feels current: Champagne on the top; Beer on the bottom. Translation? Think a structured, oversized blazer with heavily distressed jeans and sneakers. A concert tee with a sequined skirt.

Both Brenda and Stacey left with hand-decorated shopping bags in tow. Brenda purchased a show-stopping long red boucle coat that she has worn non-stop and a very cool cotton and pleather top honouring her 80’s fave, Depeche Mode. Stacy scored a fabulous striped jumpsuit that creates a perfect pulled together look for a busy photographer who needs to be able to move while looking super chic. "

We think this is so awesome!!!!!!!!!!
