Enchanted Whispers: A Collection of Heartfelt Romances is an anthology of four captivating short stories, each exploring the nuances of love, passion, and the human heart.
"The Blush of Venus" by James Francis Dwyer tells the tale of Jack, a young artist commissioned to paint a portrait of a woman named Elise. As Jack becomes increasingly infatuated with Elise, he soon discovers that she is not what she seems. The story delves into themes of love, deception, and the complexity of human emotions, leaving readers contemplating the vulnerability inherent in love.
"Amy's Lover," a short story from Florence Marryat, follows the young woman Amy as she falls for Harry, a working-class man shunned by her wealthy social circle. Despite facing numerous obstacles, the couple's love ultimately ends in tragedy. This tale explores themes of class, love, and the societal constraints that hinder people from following their hearts, while also raising questions about the sacrifices made for love.
In "On the Plains," author Ernest Favenc takes readers on a journey across the Australian plains with a group of settlers, including John, his wife Mary, and their young son. As they traverse the unforgiving landscape, the family confronts various challenges such as difficult terrain, dangerous wildlife, and potential attacks from Aboriginal people. The story examines themes of survival, perseverance, and the harsh realities of frontier life, while also addressing the impact of colonialism on indigenous communities.
Lastly, "The Agony Column" by Earl Derr Biggers centers on a mysterious love affair that unfolds through anonymous messages in a newspaper's agony column. Richard, an aspiring writer, becomes captivated by the cryptic exchanges between two strangers and embarks on a quest to unravel the truth behind their story. As he delves deeper into their enigmatic world, he discovers unexpected connections and learns about the transformative power of love.
Each story in the collection offers readers a unique glimpse into the intricacies of human relationships, ultimately highlighting the power of love to both heal and hurt in equal measure.

Edgar Rice Burroughs' "The Cave Girl" and Capt. S. P. Meek's "B.C. 30,000" are two early 20th-century adventure novels that transport their readers to vastly different periods in time. In "The Cave Girl," a young man from a privileged background finds himself shipwrecked on an uncharted island, where he encounters a fierce and independent young woman who has grown up in isolation from the modern world. Meanwhile, "B.C. 30,000" follows a group of scientists who are inadvertently transported back to the Pleistocene epoch, where they grapple with the ethical implications of altering history while struggling to survive in a prehistoric world filled with various hominid species and megafauna. Both novels explore themes of survival, cultural clashes, and the human experience!

Prepare to embark on a journey through time with "The Chronic Argonauts", a legendary tale penned by the great H. G. Wells. This masterpiece was first published in 1888 by the esteemed Royal College of Science, predating even his renowned novel, "The Time Machine". It is a rare gem, the first to feature a well-developed time machine in science fiction.

While some experts of the genre consider this to be a superior tale, its darker tone prevented it from achieving the same level of popularity as "The Time Machine". The adventure begins with the arrival of a mysterious inventor in the peaceful Welsh town of Llyddwdd, where he takes up residence in a neglected house left abandoned after the deaths of its former occupants.

The simple rural folk are in awe of the stranger, believing him to be "devilish" and shrouded in mystery. But what secrets does this enigmatic figure hold, and where has he come from? Prepare for a gripping tale full of intrigue, suspense, and daring adventure that will leave you on the edge of your seat.

As you travel through the ages, you'll witness the marvels and horrors of the past, present, and future. A must-read for all fans of adventure and science fiction!

Mademoiselle de Chartres is a sheltered heiress ("in her sixteenth year", i.e. aged 15) whose mother has brought her to the court of Henri II (a disguised version of the court of Louis XIV) to seek a husband with good prospects, financially and in society. Old jealousies against a kinsman spark intrigues against the young ingenue, and the best marriage prospects withdraw. She accepts her mother's recommendation and the overtures of a middling suitor who admires her, the Prince de Clèves.

However, after her marriage, she meets the dashing Duc de Nemours, and the two fall in love, yet do nothing to pursue their affections, limiting their contact to an occasional visit in the now-Princess of Clèves' salon. The Duc becomes enmeshed in a scandal at court that leads the Princess to believe that he has been unfaithful in his affections. A letter from a spurned mistress to her paramour is discovered in the dressing room at one of the estates. The letter is actually to the Princess' uncle, the Vidame de Chartres, who has also become entangled in a relationship with the Queen. The Vidame begs the Duc de Nemours to claim ownership of the letter, which ends up in the Princess' possession. The Duc has to produce documents from the Vidame to convince the Princess that his heart has been true. Eventually, the Prince of Clèves discerns that his wife is in love with another man. She confesses it to him, and he relentlessly quizzes her until he learns the man's identity, eventually resorting to trickery to get her to reveal it. After he sends a servant to spy on the Duc de Nemours, Monsieur de Clèves believes that his wife has been unfaithful in more than just her emotions... The novel was an enormous commercial success at the time of its publication, and would-be readers outside of Paris had to wait months to receive copies. The novel also sparked several public debates, including one about its authorship, and another about the wisdom of the Princess' decision to confess her adulterous feelings to her husband. One of the earliest psychological novels, and also the first roman d'analyse (analysis novel), La Princesse de Clèves marked a major turning point in the history of the novel, which to that point had largely been used to tell romances, implausible stories of heroes overcoming odds to find a happy marriage, with myriad subplots and running ten to twelve volumes.

La Princesse de Clèves turned that on its head with a highly realistic plot, introspective language that explored the characters' inner thoughts and emotions, and few but important subplots concerning the lives of other nobles. A wonderful, well-written thrilling and vigorous novel. A must-have for classic epic romance fans!

Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich (German: Anna Katharina Emmerick, September 8, 1774 - February 9, 1824) was a Roman Catholic Augustinian nun, stigmatic, mystic, visionary and ecstatic. On October 3, 2004 Anne Catherine Emmerich was beatified by Pope John Paul II. As in all such cases, the question of her visions was set aside, and her cause adjudicated solely on the basis of her own personal sanctity and heroic virtue.
This book on the life of the Blessed Virgin Mary was the result of visions seen by Sister Anne Catherine Emmerich, with notes taken by Clemens Brentano.

Definition of ANARCHIST
1: a person who rebels against any authority, established order, or ruling power
2: a person who believes in, advocates, or promotes anarchism or anarchy; especially : one who uses violent means to overthrow the established order

Voltairine de Cleyre (1866-1912) was an American anarchist, feminist writer, leader of the freethought movement and theorist active at the time of the Haymarket riot. She is the person who, in response to U.S. Senator Joseph R. Hawley’s offer of one thousand dollars to have a shot at an anarchist, said:
“You may, by merely paying your carfare to my home, shoot at me for nothing -- but if payment of the $1000 is a necessary part of your proposition, then when I have given you the shot, I will give the money to the propaganda of the idea of a free society in which there shall be neither assassins nor presidents, beggars nor senators.”

She was a prolific writer and speaker, opposing the State, marriage, and the domination of the Church in s*xuality and women’s lives. de Cleyre at first subscribed to the individualist school of anarchism, but later called herself only an Anarchist, shunning doctrinal fractiousness. She was a colleague of Emma Goldman’s.

Obviously, an anthology of this nature will not please everybody perfectly because there is a wide variety of themes and stylistic approaches represented in this book. Nevertheless, this is an excellent collection of stories from a wide variety of different themes, styles, viewpoints, subjects, tones and genres.

In this collection of essays:
- The Making of an Anarchist
- Eleventh November, 1887
- The Paris Commune
- Anarchism
- Anarchism & American Traditions
- The Dawn-Light of Anarchy
- Direct Action
- The Dominant Idea
- The Economic Tendency of Freethought
- On Francisco Ferrer
- In Defense of Emma Goldmann and the Right of Expropriation
- S*x Slavery
- They Who Marry Do Ill

EXCERPT:
“I die, as I have lived, a free spirit, an Anarchist, owing no allegiance to rulers, heavenly or earthly..."

"I struggled my way out at last, and was a freethinker when I left the institution, three years later, though I had never seen a book or heard a word to help me in my loneliness. It had been like the Valley of the Shadow of Death, and there are white scars on my soul yet, where Ignorance and Superstition burnt me with their hell-fire in those stifling days. Am I blasphemous? It is their word, not mine. Beside that battle of my young days all others have been easy, for whatever was without, within my own Will was supreme. It has owed no allegiance, and never shall; it has moved steadily in one direction, the knowledge and the assertion of its own liberty, with all the responsibility falling thereon.

This, I am sure, is the ultimate reason for my acceptance of Anarchism, though the specific occasion which ripened tendencies to definition was the affair of 1886-87, when five innocent men were hanged in Chicago for the act of one guilty who still remains unknown. Till then I believed in the essential justice of the American law and trial by jury. After that I never could..."

This edition contains one short story and three cozy novels by acclaimed authors, Anne Austin and Anna Katharine Green.

Included in this collection:

Cozy Mystery One: The Mysterious Bag - A Kristen Carter Mystery!
Kristen Carter, is a plain Quaker woman in her thirties who finds herself “thrown upon the world penniless and all but friendless” in 1920's London. With no way to earn a living, she decides to try her luck as a detective--which has the unfortunate effect of cutting her off from her friends and original position in society. In this story: Craigen Court is burgled, Lady Cathrow’s jewels stolen, and her French maid is suspected of having a hand in the job. Is there a connection between the theft and a bag whose contents include clerical trappings and a su***de note found on a doorstep not far away? Written by Tory Hageman.

Cozy Mystery Two: Murder at Bridge
A mystery written by acclaimed mystery author, Anne Austin. Broadway belle Nita Selim (an actress with a colorful past) has come to a prosperous Midwestern town and inserted herself into local high society. But neither she nor they are all what they seem, as becomes clear when she's found dead during a bridge party. Investigator Bonnie Dundee tracks the killer with earnest derring-do, and the plot keeps him and the reader guessing pretty well. This is the original and unabridged version of this classic whodunnit.

Cozy Mystery Three: The Mill Mystery
A mystery written by acclaimed mystery author, Anna Katharine Green. One of her most interesting mysteries, this explores the nature of moral weakness when confronted with violence. A young clergyman is found dead in mysterious circumstances in a disused mill. The news is fatal to his fiancée. And an imperious matron on the other side of town also has a stroke on hearing the news. Why? And why are her two sons behaving in such a sinister manner? The dying fiancée’s room-mate – a level-headed orphan – decides to investigate, takes a job nursing the sick woman, and helps to uncover a shocking tale of selfishness, greed and hypocrisy.

Cozy Mystery Four: The Woman in the Alcove
Another great mystery written by acclaimed author, Anna Katharine Green. A young nurse gets engaged during the course of a ball in New York. Then a woman is found murdered and her diamonds stolen. The nurse investigates, in an effort to clear her fiancé’s name.

Cozy mysteries are a subgenre of crime fiction in which s*x and violence are downplayed. Cozies very rarely focus on s*x, profanity or violence. The murders take place off stage, and are often relatively bloodless (e.g. poisoning), while s*xual activity (if any) between characters is only ever gently implied and never directly addressed.

This edition contains four cozy novels by acclaimed authors, Anna Katharine Green, Carolyn Wells and Mrs. Charles Bryce (Marion Bryce).

Included in this collection:

Cozy Mystery One: The Sword of Damocles
This mystery written by acclaimed mystery author, Anna Katharine Green, features dishonest bankers, theft, a wayward woman and a number of young people who cannot marry until their reputations are shown to be spotless. The brilliant but reclusive detective, Ebenezer Gryce (featured in “An Ebenezer Gryce Mysteries Collection”) also makes a brief appearance.

Cozy Mystery Two: Raspberry Jam
One of Carolyn Wells’ best mystery novels featuring Fleming Stone. Its main puzzle is linked to Wells’ earliest such stories: explaining how outsiders might pe*****te a locked domicile - here done right. This novel also has three good subplots about explaining purported psychic phenomena. The writing is lively throughout.

Cozy Mystery Three: Mystery of the Gold Bag
This Carolyn Wells’ mystery novel features a murdered millionaire, a missing will, a private secretary and a beautiful young woman who falls under suspicion. Can she be guilty? Will the modest and relatively inexperienced young detective fall for her?

Cozy Mystery Four: The Ashiel Mystery
A Scottish mystery written Mrs. Charles Bryce [Marion Bryce]. As the adopted daughter of Sir Charles Byrne, young Pauline suffers when he marries again. Then she gets a chance to meet her natural father. This is followed by murders, missing wills and deception in a Scottish castle. It’s enough to make a girl faint. Fortunately the detective, Mr. Gimblet is on hand to solve the mystery.

- The Selected Letters of John Woolman
- The Journal of John Woolman
- Considerations on the Keeping of Negros

John Woolman (October 19, 1720 – October 7, 1772) was a Quaker preacher, traveling throughout the American colonies, advocating against conscription, military taxation, and particularly slavery.

Woolman showed unusual insight for the time, in that he lived and worked among the Indians, recognizing that the Spirit moved among them also. He showed concern for the poor, for animals, and for the environment, his Quakerly witness qualifying as one of the earliest precedents to modern campaigns and sensibilities in those areas.

In Woolman's travels, whenever he received hospitality from a slaveholder, he insisted on paying the slaves for their work in attending him. He would also refuse to be served with silver cups, plates, and utensils, on grounds that slaves were forced to dig such precious minerals and gems for the rich. On one occasion in his early adulthood, he did convey the ownership of a slave in someone's will, but was later so filled with remorse over the act that he went back, found the individual so injured, and made monetary reparations sufficient to sustain that person in freedom for some years.

The Journal of John Woolman is not only considered to be an important spiritual document, but also a classic in English literature. It is reportedly the longest-published book in the history of North America other than the Bible, having been continuously published since before the 1776 revolution.

A great example of life in a simpler time.

The life of the saint who founded the Benedictine order, written by a later saint and Pope. The translation is by an anonymous Benedictine nun, and was first printed in 1898.

Benedict of Nursia (Italian: San Benedetto da Norcia) (480 – 547) was a saint from Italy, the founder of Western Christian monasticism, and a rule-giver for monks.

His purpose may be gleaned from his Rule, namely that "Christ may bring us all together to life eternal."

The Rule of Benedict became one of the most influential religious rules in Western Christendom. For this reason Benedict is often called the founder of western Christian monasticism.

Benedict was canonized by Pope Honorius III in the year 1220.

This collection of books written by Booker T. Washington includes: "Up from Slavery – An Autobiography", "My Larger Education", and "Future of the American Negro."

Booker Taliaferro Washington (April 5, 1856 – November 14, 1915) was an American educator, race leader, author, orator, and political leader. He founded the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute in Alabama. He was one of the most influential (and controversial) African Americans in history. He was born into slavery to a slave mother and white father, who was a nearby planter, in a rural area in southwestern Virginia. After emancipation, Washington worked in West Virginia in a variety of manual labor jobs before making his way to Hampton Roads seeking an education--he was self-motivated and committed to his own education from a young age. He worked his way through Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute (now Hampton University) and attended college at Wayland Seminary (now Virginia Union University). After returning to Hampton as a teacher, in 1881 he was named as the first leader of the new Tuskegee Institute in Alabama.

Washington attained national prominence for his Atlanta Address of 1895, which attracted the attention of politicians and the public, making him a popular spokesperson for African-American citizens. He built a nationwide network of supporters in many black communities, with black ministers, educators and businessmen composing his core supporters. Washington played a dominant role in black politics, winning wide support in the black community and among more liberal whites (especially rich Northern whites). He gained access to top national leaders in politics, philanthropy and education. Washington's efforts included cooperating with white people and enlisting the support of wealthy philanthropists, helping to raise funds to establish and operate thousands of small community schools and institutions of higher education for the betterment of blacks throughout the South. This work continued for many years after his death.

Northern critics called Washington's followers the "Tuskegee Machine." After 1909, Washington was criticized by the leaders of the new NAACP, especially W. E. B. Du Bois, who demanded a stronger tone of protest for advancement of civil rights needs. Washington replied that confrontation would lead to disaster for the outnumbered blacks, and that cooperation with supportive whites was the only way to overcome pervasive racism in the long run. At the same time, he secretly funded litigation for civil rights cases, such as challenges to southern constitutions and laws that disenfranchised blacks.

In this collection:
Book One: Up from Slavery – An Autobiography (published in 1901) - a poignant memoir from Washington's early days of slavery on a plantation and his emancipation at the age of nine. Washington would go on to be the single-most powerful influence to disenchanted young blacks Nationwide. He was a powerful presence and self-made man, leading the way for future leader Martin Luther King Jr.

Book Two: My Larger Education (published in 1911) - a detailed account of the creation, development, and promotion of the Tuskegee Institute to satisfy frequent public requests for information about "the educational methods which we are now using at Tuskegee; and to illustrate, for the benefit of the members of my own race, some of the ways in which a people who are struggling upward may turn disadvantages into opportunities". In doing so, he also reveals complex, nuanced views about how to best promote the advancement of African Americans after Emancipation.
