Why Dopplegang?
Dopplegang Studios submerges itself in media on a daily basis. Whether it's in Audio Production, Video Production, Graphic Design or Website Design, here’s a typical set up of how I like to record:
For drums, provided is a UDRUM kit custom made from Mahogany and has Maple reinforced rims for that added maple attack. It really has this nice hybrid sound between your traditional vintage sounding Rogers type kit and your more modern Yamaha Maple Custom. I have everything running through the Focusrite ISA 428 pre typically using the 110 impedance and then I couple that with DBX 160 compressors. I think they sound particularly nice on kick and snare. They are just bass monsters!
For bass and guitar, I typically like to DI everything… I know it’s not always ideal for guitar, but this allows me to re amp afterwards, plus after much research, I decided to add a Hughes and Kettner amp to my guitar amp collection. It has the red DI box out that simulates a mic’ed cabinet. It’s pretty neat!
For vocals, I have carefully chosen two different styles of channels strips that are complete work horses! I wanted a solid state and a tube style pre amp to offer different flavours before getting into the box. I like to use the Focusrite ISA 430 to get that Rupert Neve style sound, it features both VCA and Optical style compression, which I love. The de-esser uses an optical phase canceling system that is less intrusive than traditional compression-based designs. It’s truly a great piece! When I’m trying to achieve super warm & rich vocals that need more work sitting in a mix, I use my Manley Core channel strip. Underlying the accuracy and clarity, there’s a depth that gives a real weight and body to vocals from the valve preamp, and the best part, is that Manley puts it’s ELOP style compressor before the valve preamp to prevent it from clipping so what you get is something that really grabs onto the source going in to the Pre.
