Our Story
Hallucinatory electronics from the Mother City.
Faretrade is the alias of Tyler Golato, a scientist, producer, and DJ from the United States who has made Cape Town his home base. His burning passion for techno – first and foremost, as a raver – contributed to him quickly gaining traction in the Cape Town underground scene. Tyler is a talented multi-instrumentalist and musician with a long-standing love for sound design and synthesis that permeates his DJ sets. His scientific background has heavily influenced his approach to techno, which is rooted in exploratory experimentation to build complex, layered soundscapes that skew towards the hypnotic and psychoacoustic. He believes that unlike other genres of music, techno is deeply introspective. It doesn’t tell you how to feel, but instead, holds a mirror to you. This abstract, yet deeply reflective quality is one of the primary elements that has drawn him to the space.
Tyler is a resident at MASS, a monthly event for experimental techno at Mødular, and one half of LazerQuest. Occasionally, he plays unpredictable sets under the moniker DJ Monogamy. Tyler is also an active techno producer. His first release will be on an upcoming vinyl compilation for City Bowl Wax Network, a label run by Jed Coen.
