In our latest article, we're looking at the idea of increasing your lowest level of mastery. When we're talking about mastery, we want to understand what skills you have that you can perform unconsciously and articulate to another person. The top end of your skills may be very high, but knowing what your low end of mastery is helps set you up for success when everything starts going sideways and your adrenaline takes over. Little tip, consistency in training makes all the difference when we're talking about mastery of skills. Check out the article and let's talk about what you feel your most prominent skill gap is.

Let’s be honest boating is one of the harshest environments you can put rope and webbing through. Boaters often complain that their gear is constantly falling apart and that gear doesn’t last due to the harsh strain we put on our gear. Between the water, microscopic sand, mold, and whatever else is hiding in the water, materials breakdown super quickly.rope. a little help from our friends we wanted to take a look at how quickly ropes break down and when to retire our ropes in our latest article.

Some people love being in the outdoors alone and getting to be by themselves with their own thoughts. A lot of people feel like the outdoors is their safe space, but humans are not meant to live in the water, it is not safe for us no matter how much gear we have. Risk management requires one of two things either avoidance or mitigation. Let's face it if you're reading this, you're not avoiding the rivers, so how do we mitigate risk on the water? In our latest article we'll be looking at this in depth.

Why does every piece of outdoor gear I own stink all the time? In our latest article, we're taking a deeper look into why it stinks. River gear for a variety of reasons, is the worst at holding the stank. There are really 2 factors at play here. It’s partly you and partly the environment. The reality is your gear stinks and we're gonna fix it…with science.

What do you do to help foster a positive safety environment? In our latest article, we're looking at red flags and when you should speak up upon encountering a higher risk scenario. Sometimes people miss things, sometimes ego is involved, and sometimes your unique skill set gives you a different perspective when you see something. Either way it's important to foster a community in which you can say something and your crew will listen. We also dropped a risk tolerance tool on the site as well.

In todays article (link in bio) we're talking about starting slowly with beginners. During rafting season we often have a very short window to welcome beginners into the sport. Summer and early fall months are often warm and inviting enough to help people get started without too much equipment. Unfortunately, this means that we have a tendency to rush people into higher class whitewater or overload them with information, but for beginners we have to remember that we need to start slowly. So how do we work within these constraints to help new paddlers progress?

In today's quick lesson is talking about cutting impliments in your first aid kit. First aid gear is often one of the most neglected groups of equipment outdoor folks have. You pack it up and forget about it right? Well not so fast, you really should be checking not only the inventory, but the condition of your supplies. Having a good pair of shears always available will allow you to cut through just about anything in short order. You never know when you're going to have to cut clothes or dry gear to assist an injured party.

In today's video (https://youtu.be/bzNPrlbC8E0), Trevor is doing a comparison video on 3 popular play boats. Play boats in rafting are rafts that are less than 12 feet in length designed to surf and play on features. These boats are often super light weight and can be very flippy. The narrow width and high rocker of these boats makes them somewhat unstable, but also a blast to paddle. This video will be comparing the Hyside Whitewater Inflatables Mini Max, AIRE Cub, And the 11 foot SL from SOTAR WHITEWATER MFG . You can find out more about each boat at the links in the video, but if you're going to spend $3200 to $5000 dollars on a raft make sure you know what you are getting into.

In this lesson (https://www.raftingmag.com/brs-ferry-angles), Trevor is discussing how to set yourself up for success with proper ferry angles. Getting ferry angles right can seem challenging at first, but were going to break it down by talking about the types of ferry angles, choosing landmarks, and how paddlers can manage rotation. Our goal is to give you a good framework that we can build upon in more advanced lessons. So, what is the first thing you need to understand ferry angles?

In this lesson (link in bio) is discussing proper techniques for executing a high brace. The high brace is an extremely useful paddling technique to have in your arsenal when you feel like the boat is likely to flip. This skill requires training to get the feel for it as well as proper footwork and form to prevent injury.

13/09/2022

In today's lesson our Junior Team Girls are sharing a technique to brace for impacts when you are on the highside of the raft. You can reach your foot across the raft to the opposite tube and brace for the impact of the raft trying to throw you to the lowside. This is especially effective in a big surf or when the boat stands straight up and is about to flip.

In today's quick lesson we're talking about new ropes. Specifically we're looking at cleaning your rope prior to use. Ropes come from the factory with a lot of chemical protestants on their surface making them slippery to hold and work with. We recommend washing your rope prior to use to get any of the detergents off. This will make your first few uses less slippery and more reliable.

On today's quick lesson we're talking about PFD fit. Check the link in bio for more Beginner lessons, but the most important element in properly fitting PFDs it having the bottom strap catch the bottom of the wearer's ribcage. After the bottom buckle is secured you can tighten the rest of the buckles and crank down the lapel straps. The lapel straps are designed to lift the PFD and get the bottom strap to catch the ribs. This will prevent the PFD from riding up over the user's head. If the user's body shape prevents the bottom strap from catching the ribs consider a croch strap from the front to back of the PFD to keep it in place.

In this lesson, Trevor is sharing how to create a trucker's hitch to secure equipment when you do not have a strap available. This is most effective when you are wondering how to tie a raft to the top of your vehicle or how to tie a kayak down. The trucker's hitch utilizes a basic 3:1 mechanical advantage principal to help secure the load and get tension on the system. We always recommend backing up the trucker's hitch with a half hitch to help further secure the hitch from popping out while you are driving.

How do you surf a raft? In this quick lesson, Trevor is discussing some tips for getting your raft into a surf. This is undoubtedly one of the most fun parts about rafting, so make sure you can effectively surf your boat in your favorite play spot. This also builds a basis for a critical class IV and V skill set.

Last weekend the team partnered up with American Whitewater to help get Karl from USDA Forest Service out on California's South Silver Creek. It was awesome boating with Karl and sharing some of the challenges we face as boaters with him. It was also nice having the opportunity to paddle with the Junior Team so Karl could see how we are educating future generations of boaters. There were some significant wood hazards that posed challenges for everyone on the water, but several groups of boaters and kayakers were able to share opinions on the run and hazards. Being from a fire service background Karl not only discussed some possibilities for hazard mitigation, but put those discussions into action. By Monday Forest Service work crews had either cut out hazards completely chopping hazard trees into smaller pieces or removing limbs from hazard trees. This helped to facilitate debris moving downstream and preventing debris from creating massive log jams above the larger rapids. Most hazards should be clear and boats can freely boof over or be pulled over logs to make boating easier. So a couple takeaways from the trip:

1) Stoked we are to have receptive recreation planners who take boating and river navigation seriously. As well as implement hazard mitigation to open this run up to less experienced boater who may be intimidated by these hazards.
2) Get involved with your local recreation planners and if you can help facilitate getting them on the water to discuss the issues boaters face. It's one thing to talk about it in a meeting it's another thing for them to experience recreation from our perspective and build those bridges. It makes successful recreation planning a partnership rather than adversarial in nature.
3)We want to say a huge thanks to American Whitewater for putting the wheels in motion and asking our crew to facilitate the trip. Also, huge shout out to our sponsors Immersion Research Sawyer Paddles and Oars SOTAR WHITEWATER MFG and AIRE for helping us to have the boats and equipment to safely get Karl on the water as well as get photos of the trip.

Looking forward to more of these projects in the future!
