In today's quick lesson @theraftingmagazineguy is talking about cutting impliments in your first aid kit. First aid gear is often one of the most neglected groups of equipment outdoor folks have. You pack it up and forget about it right? Well not so fast, you really should be checking not only the inventory, but the condition of your supplies. Having a good pair of shears always available will allow you to cut through just about anything in short order. You never know when you're going to have to cut clothes or dry gear to assist an injured party.
In this lesson (https://www.raftingmag.com/brs-ferry-angles), Trevor is discussing how to set yourself up for success with proper ferry angles. Getting ferry angles right can seem challenging at first, but were going to break it down by talking about the types of ferry angles, choosing landmarks, and how paddlers can manage rotation. Our goal is to give you a good framework that we can build upon in more advanced lessons. So, what is the first thing you need to understand ferry angles?
What is a hole? Well check the link in our bio for more, or come join the crew at Feather Fest, come support American Whitewater, and stop by for our hydrology clinic on Saturday. @theraftingmagazineguy is sharing some knowledge we picked up from Dr. Rollin Hotchkiss at BYU about hydraulic jumps and flow states. If you can't join the clinic then you can always check out the beginner rafting series through the link in our bio!
In this lesson (link in bio) @theraftingmagazineguy is discussing proper techniques for executing a high brace. The high brace is an extremely useful paddling technique to have in your arsenal when you feel like the boat is likely to flip. This skill requires training to get the feel for it as well as proper footwork and form to prevent injury.
In today's lesson our Junior Team Girls are sharing a technique to brace for impacts when you are on the highside of the raft. You can reach your foot across the raft to the opposite tube and brace for the impact of the raft trying to throw you to the lowside. This is especially effective in a big surf or when the boat stands straight up and is about to flip.
Quick Lesson - Cross Brace
In today's lesson we're looking at a technique to brace for impacts when you are on the highside of the raft. You can reach your foot across the raft to the opposite tube and brace for the impact of the raft trying to throw you to the lowside. This is especially effective in a big surf or when the boat stands straight up and is about to flip.
In today's quick lesson we're talking about new ropes. Specifically we're looking at cleaning your rope prior to use. Ropes come from the factory with a lot of chemical protestants on their surface making them slippery to hold and work with. We recommend washing your rope prior to use to get any of the detergents off. This will make your first few uses less slippery and more reliable.
On today's quick lesson we're talking about PFD fit. Check the link in bio for more Beginner lessons, but the most important element in properly fitting PFDs it having the bottom strap catch the bottom of the wearer's ribcage. After the bottom buckle is secured you can tighten the rest of the buckles and crank down the lapel straps. The lapel straps are designed to lift the PFD and get the bottom strap to catch the ribs. This will prevent the PFD from riding up over the user's head. If the user's body shape prevents the bottom strap from catching the ribs consider a croch strap from the front to back of the PFD to keep it in place.
Had a little fun during the spring with Junior Team Paddler @lexie_ingraham sliding through the snow. Sometimes you just need to change up the type of whitewater you're running 🥸
In this lesson, Trevor is sharing how to create a trucker's hitch to secure equipment when you do not have a strap available. This is most effective when you are wondering how to tie a raft to the top of your vehicle or how to tie a kayak down. The trucker's hitch utilizes a basic 3:1 mechanical advantage principal to help secure the load and get tension on the system. We always recommend backing up the trucker's hitch with a half hitch to help further secure the hitch from popping out while you are driving.
How do you surf a raft? In this quick lesson, Trevor is discussing some tips for getting your raft into a surf. This is undoubtedly one of the most fun parts about rafting, so make sure you can effectively surf your boat in your favorite play spot. This also builds a basis for a critical class IV and V skill set.

In this lesson (link below) Trevor and Nathan are discussing how to properly rig a paddle raft for single day trips. This lesson will lay the foundation of concepts for how to rig a paddle raft for a variety of configurations. There are several systems that specifically address individual concerns for paddle boating along with various regional differences, however this lesson will give you a strong foundation to create system that works for you.
The skills we discuss in this lesson can be built upon to help you efficiently rig full multi-day paddle boat or r2 setups, which we will cover in advanced rigging lessons. This is a Rafting Magazine Premium lesson which is available to paid subscribers, please help support our work and get access to all of our premium content for only $5 per month!

We're back with another quick lesson. Team paddler Nathan Stayrook Hobbs is sharing how to tie a load releasing hitch. This hitch can work wonders when you need to do some cranking to get a pinned boat off a rock. When properly executed you can quickly release this hitch in a pinch or when you need to quickly detatch a line.
So stoked to be there with team paddler Carson Watts crushing his first Cherry Creek lap in an IK which also ended up being a no portage lap 😳 This was a super special trip for Carson as he got his start boating on the Tuolumne River with Tom Mac so coming back to this place to be able to take on Cherry Creek made the trip that much sweeter. 🎥 Kailee Lynn
In today's lesson (https://www.raftingmag.com/brs-pfd-fitting) Trevor Croft and Nathan Stayrook Hobbs will be discussing how to properly adjust a PFD to fit someone on a river trip. There are a number of different body sizes and shapes that you will encounter on the river. PFDs are designed to be flexible to fit a broad range of sizes. Getting the fit right will help you and your fellow boaters have a safe and fun day on the water.
Just another Tuesday for team paddler Nathan Stayrook Hobbs 😎
Today Team Paddler Kailee is talking about 3 types of paddles you may meet on the river. Make sure you're getting the right paddle for the job with our article in the Gear Shed discussing paddle selection! https://www.raftingmag.com/paddles
Want to win a new boat this summer? If you haven't checked out the rules for Flipline 2021 check the link in our bio for all the event details. Team paddler Nathan Stayrook Hobbs did this flip challenge back in January with a sub 1 minute flip challenge. Can you do better? Just remember to count out your swimmers before you get that boat back over.
