Toronto's first generation of electric buses began service on June 19, 1922 on the Mount Pleasant route. The experimental buses were so successful that the "trackless trolleys" ran themselves out of service, as the ridership grew to a point where the TTC felt that streetcars were required. On November 3, 1925, an extension of the St. Clair streetcar entered service, bringing an end to the short-lived Mount Pleasant route. It would be another twenty-two years before trolley buses ran again.

Out of the four 1st generation of TTC trolley coaches, only one survives in a museum today. TTC bus #23 is currently at the Halton County Radial Railway and undergoing restoration.

2019 photo was taken by Trevor the Time-Traveler.
