These guys are three of our unsung heroes at Care4Calais.
For the last few years, George (left) and Henry (right) have been driving their van from their home in South Devon to our south coast storage unit, picking up clothes and essentials, and taking them to Calais. Once there they volunteer at distributions, or fix our vans and generators with their incredible mechanical skills (“Just what we’ve picked up after a lifetime of owning our own knackered old vans,” according to the very modest George). Without this help we simply couldn’t move things around in Calais, so we are very, very grateful.
Sometimes George and Henry come with their pal Alex, but this time it was JD (he’s the one in the middle). JD is a carpenter, and in a few days he quietly mended our warehouse shelves.
All three were so happy and cheerful, they were like a burst of sunshine for us, and we can’t thank them enough.
“I like coming to Calais,” George told us. “It’s distressing, as you know it will be, but it’s also uplifting. To see so many people helping each other restores my faith in humanity.
“The first time I came to volunteer here, seven years ago, I met a family with some teenage boys around the same age as my nephew. One of them in particular was so helpful and resourceful, anything you asked for, they’d go and find on the site. He was an inspiration that has lasted with me to this day.”
We always need more people to drive supplies to Calais – and we can supply the van and petrol. Could you anyone you know help? If you could, please email [email protected]
