The slow, wafting snowfall belied the severity of the storm. The winter chill had reached a point where Rurian and his seasoned company of dwarves, who had lived in the mountains all their lives, struggled to maintain the pace of the trek. It was a deep cold, the kind that lingers internally and makes one feel as if they might never experience warmth again. Rurian was among a handful of his troop of several hundred who was armed, adorned in the rich blue aqin armor gifted to him by the council. He strode through the ranks of caravans on the narrow pass and checked in with several of the families, making sure they were equipped with rations and supplies needed before they crossed the Azaron. Suddenly, he heard a gruff call from up ahead, one of his royal guard, gesturing for the convoy to halt. While the guard's words were captured and siphoned off by the wind, Rurian quickly saw what had drawn them to a halt. Standing in the way of the pass stood at least a hundred armed men, likely loyalists from the Gramin clan by the looks of them. “I told you they would not let us go peacefully my lord” a guard groused anxiously, sizing up the blockade as Rurian strode to his flank. Rurian placed his hand on the shoulder of the guard and addressed his band of fighters, “Easy friends, there will be no bloodshed here. Just a simple chat is all… I will take care of this. Just a chat.”

Fall of Kastil
"Thick pillars of black smoke pressed skywards, carrying and then dispersing ash like snowfall. Screams of lives snuffed out too soon intermeshed with the thunderous crashings of roofs and buildings as they caved in from the flames. The orcs moved through the city with calculated precision, wreaking unbridled destruction on the ill-prepared populace. The acrid smell of burning flesh, and soot and beast washed through the streets..."
The Aftermath
Xail stepped gingerly into the city square, his gaze resting on the statue of the Arkon that stood sentinel over the slaughter below. The sun was setting and the skies rich orange and pink glow was slowly fading. The streets were littered with bodies; fathers, mothers, sons and daughters. Xail knelt and as he did he felt eyes watching him from beleaguered houses. Several thousand inhabitants of Borcade had survived the attack but were still in shock, like the stunned silence that comes when a man’s chest is pierced by an arrow. Before the pain, adrenaline and desperate screams, there is that interminably moment when he realizes that his life, every memory and unique facet of his being, is about to be snuffed out. Xail raised both of his palms and faced them towards two knights that had fought to protect the city. His brow furrowed and his eyes glowed softly as beads of light coalesced into blue tendrils and wrapped around the men. Their bodies lifted and slowly color began to flow back into their cheeks. To see life returning to a dead man was no pleasant sight. The men convulsed and sputtered blood, their eyes bounced frantically back and forth, trying in vain to make sense of what was happening. Xail, however, moved quickly on to the next set of bodies, it would be a long night.
