Despite initial appearances, this event is not caused by humans but rather is a natural process for these salmon.
Sockeye salmon have a complex life cycle that involves both freshwater and saltwater habitats. They start their lives in rivers, streams, and lakes before migrating to the ocean as smolts, where they spend most of their adult lives feeding on plankton and small fish until reaching sexual maturity around age 5. After which, millions of sockeye salmon return from the ocean back into fresh waters every year for spawning, resulting in massive amounts of carcasses lining river shorelines during this period; nonetheless, it still remains crucial for sustaining various wildlife through harsh winters because without these salmon runs there would be an irrecoverable loss of biodiversity across southwest Alaska’s landscape. 🐟

Meet the Southern Ground Hornbill! These beautiful birds can live up to 40 years! ❤️
Unfortunately they’re categorized as an endangered species in South Africa. Ground hornbills have a slow breeding cycle, resulting in just one brood of two chicks every nine years, with only one chick surviving.

Did you know that dolphins deliberately handle pufferfish and use their toxins as a recreational drug? A dolphin and pufferfish is like a cat with their catnip, and if you’ve ever seen a cat with catnip you know how they get. It’s no surprise that dolphins are very smart creatures and have found something that they enjoy as a group, but who would’ve thought!
Pufferfish have toxins that work as a defense mechanism and it’s pretty lethal in high doses. However, dolphins have found a way to consume a non-lethal amount, which serves as a hallucinogenic. The daily news reports “The dolphins were filmed gently playing with the puffer, passing it between each other for 20 to 30 minutes at a time, unlike the fish they had caught as prey which were swiftly torn apart.”
Isn’t it so interesting!

These 2 penguins meet regularly to comfort each other and spend hours looking at the Melbourne Skyline. The elderly female on the right lost her partner, and so did the younger male on the left. This photographer spent 3 full nights with this colony and stated that they were “flipper in flipper”. He captured an amazing moment, and it truly is touching.

Swift Foxes finally return to Montana after 51 years! In the past their population has declined rapidly due to loss of habitat and poisoning intended for coyotes. It is now illegal to kill them, but sometimes they’re mistaken as coyotes and get killed. Swift foxes are the latest locally extinct species to make their return! 🦊

Clownfish have the ability to change genders! All clownfish are born males, but some then into females if they have to. One might transition to female if the only breeding female dies, it all depends on the circumstances. They’re all born with both female and male parts, and have the ability to transition if they choose to.

When encountering sharks, it’s essential to remain calm and composed. Avoid splashing or panicking, as these actions can trigger their prey drive. Instead, stand your ground, maintain eye contact, and push them away if necessary. 💙🦈 🎥: @mermaid.kayleigh — #shark #sharkweek #animals #ocean #marinelife #conservation #nature #foryou #wildlifephotography #wildlife #sealife
