The most interesting place I visited this year? Without hesitation . I had a feeling the history of this small town in Vermont would reveal something special. I also underestimated how learning about its past would inspire me in so many ways.
I knew some things about this place from conversations with a good friend in Jackson that grew up there. I heard stories of his childhood. He compared it to Jackson. Paradise for anyone that loves the outdoors.
My trip to in Vermont stands out for many reasons. I got to experience a little of everything this town has to offer. The Equinox prides itself on the 1927 Walter Travis golf course and for good reason. It’s fantastic. I came to find out Travis has another course in town and that him and his wife loved this area. So much so, they chose this as their final resting place. Of course I went to find them and pay my respects. You could feel the history in every room at the resort. Everything maintained perfectly with a charm all of its own. The staff became my friends almost immediately. Fly-fishing school with in the very same rivers where it was founded, can’t be beat. My guide was stoked I could actually fish so we worked on my cast. My self taught technique improved significantly thanks to him sharing his knowledge. Off roading with on their custom built track in the forest is something I’ll never forget. Dinner at a restaurant that dates back to the 1700’s, I mean really. I ate in the same room as George Washington. Cliff jumping at a marble quarry. Then walking around town and now noticing marble everywhere that came from the very same quarry.
I had planned for 3 days, it turned into a week and i still didn’t want to leave. Around every corner I connected the dots. Those dots then led me on all types of adventures with people i had just met but wanted to tell me the story of their town. I found myself asking questions and uncovering the history of things that were prominently right in front of me.
It was definitely a different kind of golf trip and I loved every second of it.
