One night Veeru- who is the city’s well-known gambler approached a preacher and said he would like to talk to him after the Good Friday service – Charles agreed to do so. Some of the elders asked him what the gambler wanted. When Charles told them that he had promised to talk with the man after the service. The elders told him he dared not do so, for the man had a reputation of being the most wick
ed man in the area. Charles replied,”I have given him my word and I shall keep it.” That night Charles preached on Barabbas & on the “Cleansing Power of the Blood of Christ.” After the service Charles left as he had promised. When they turned into a dark alley, Charles, began to have some misgivings about his decision (the words of the elders start haunting him). When they entered the gambler’s underground den, Veeru pulled a revolver from his pocket and showed Charles the notches on the barrel, and told him that he had killed four men with the gun. Not only that I made my Boss dead drunk and then danced with him to the fast beat of the drum, till he dropped dead. Then he asked, “Pastor Charles, is there any hope for a man like me?” Charles paused before replying, and then said , The Bible says, “The blood of Jesus Christ, God’s Son, cleanses us from all sin.”
Then Veeru said, “Pastor Shahib, I am a wealthy man. I make lots of money by operating a saloon and gambling den. We get the customers drunk and then take their money away
from them in one way or another. “Pastor Shahib is there any hope for a man like me?”
Once again, Charles paused before replying, and then said,
“The Blood of Jesus Christ, God’s Son, cleanses us from all sin.”
Then Veeru said, “I live across the street in a lovely home. Several years ago I deceived my wife and got her to marry me by posing to be a successful businessman. Soon a little daughter was born into our home. When she was ten I came home drunk one night, and slammed her against a hot stove- for she was singing “Jesus loves me this I know- for the Bible tells me so.”
With a quivering voice he utters- “She will now wear the scar on her face to her grave. For I hated the Name of Jesus.
“Pastor tell me, is there any hope for a wretch like me?”
Charles said, “Your record is a dark one indeed, but the Bible says “The Blood of Jesus Christ God’s Son cleanses us from all our sin.”
When Charles left, the gambler was convicted of his sins & knelt on the floor, poured out his heart in repentance before God, and received Jesus Christ as his Saviour and Lord. He then went into the Saloon and cried- “Everybody out.”
The bartender tried to reason with him and said, “Boss, we are doing a big business.” But his arguments were of no avail. When everyone was out, the gambler pulled a leg off a table and began to smash everything in the saloon, liquor and all. He then surrenders himself to the police. Easter morning and the church bells were ringing to a rhythmic sound. Veeru turning whispers- The Blood of Jesus Christ God’s Son, cleanses us from all sin.” Veeru is handcuffed by the police inspector. Veeru’s wife & daughter turn to see the jeep with teary eyes distancing from their point of view-
