🔢 You might think that staggering statistics and surprising percentages will capture your audience's attention and draw them in more to your cause, but that isn’t usually the case.

Numbers are simply not most effective on their own. They do best when given a name and face – storytelling.

Have you started thinking about end-of-year?

It might seem premature, but right now is the perfect time to begin planning – before things get crazy busy.

Here's a checklist to help you start:
✅ Plan your timeframe. Our sweet spot is between 10-14 days, although we've had success with campaigns as short as a week.
✅ Decide a fundraising goal. Make sure it's realistic for your organization – bonus points if you can secure a match from your board or other donor.
✅ Outline your content. How many social media posts, emails, print pieces, etc. will you implement and when? Get it all on a spreadsheet and arrange until it works for you.
✅ Choose other details. Creating a pop-up for your website and a campaign-specific Facebook cover photo are two simple but helpful examples.
✅ Nail down your impact stor(y/ies). Don't wait until November to ask that beneficiary if they'll share about their experience for your campaign; ask them now!

Last week, we covered a couple of examples of testing between factors to determine what works best. To summarize:

Allow several tries before ruling something out entirely.

Be aware of outside factors that might have affected your results positively or negatively.

And recognize that things change, even within your own audience, so don’t be afraid to experiment!

❓ Question: How long should we test a new [email layout, ad format, etc.] before deciding whether or not it works?

💡 Answer: There is no simple answer, but it's important to make decisions informed by your own research – not only best practices from internet experts – before concluding what resonates best with your target audience.

Example 2️⃣ (see yesterday's post for another example)

What: A/B test of an email to the same 800 person audience, on the same day of the week, at the same time.

Purpose: Increase registrations for an exclusive upcoming event at your store.

Difference: Email 1 has a button "above the fold" to the registration page while email 2 simply includes the URL in the same spot.

Detail: Both emails include a Register Now button "below the fold" after providing more details about the event.

Results: After three days, email 1 has 15 button clicks while email 2 has 13 URL clicks. On both emails, the button "below the fold" resulted in the most clicks: 30 and 31 respectively.

Conclusion: The resulting difference between text links and buttons is minor; further tests are needed to understand more. You do know, however, that your audience wants more details before taking action and that a button following the majority of your content is most effective.

❓ Question: How long should we test a new [email layout, ad format, etc.] before deciding whether or not it works?

💡 Answer: There are a number of factors to consider – from your audience to your goals to your budget.

If you have a large budget and can manage extensive A/B testing, it can be useful. However, you can learn a lot just from watching your own content, seeing what resonates and utilizing those insights going forward.

You might also discover something you didn't expect.

Example 1️⃣ (stay tuned for tomorrow's post with another example)

What: Three similar but not identical mailed letters to the same list over the span of three months.

Purpose: Receiving donations to your nonprofit.

Difference: Two letters include your donate page URL while the other includes your donate page URL along with a QR code.

Results: A week after the letter with the QR code goes in the mail, you receive five donations in one day. The other letters, sent one and two months prior, resulted in just two and four donations total.

Conclusion: While results might have been affected by the month the letters were sent, it's safe to say with relatively high confidence that QR codes help to simplify the giving experience for your audience and should be included in future mailers.

Social media checklist 101 | Here are a few things to check before your social media post goes live:

✅ Spelling and grammar. You might usually be a spelling whiz, but always double-check that you "dotted your Is and crossed your Ts" (even if you're using Grammarly!).

✅ Media. Are your photos cropped optimally for each platform? Did your video upload with sound? Make sure your post looks polished before you hit send.

✅ Timing. Your audience is most active on different days of the week and at different times throughout each day. Consider delaying your post – or posting another day – if it might reach more people.

📈 Optimizing performance: Small changes can lead to improved engagement, higher conversion rates and better ROI. (Especially when working with a tight budget, getting the most for your money matters!)
