Provisioning tips for food & drinks 👇
🗓 Planning for a few weeks
Some charter bases offer a provisioning list, others don’t. These lists can be limited in items, and don’t offer many brand options. They are also more expensive than local shops.
We found the best way is to rent a car and go to the shop yourself.
Many places won’t have prices online, but there are often images on Google where you can zoom into the prices on shelves of the store!
🥗 Picking the right groceries
When planning meals and shopping lists, check price levels. Some imported items can be ridiculously expensive and not worth buying.
Fresh stuff like lettuce gets old quickly if not in the fridge. We recommend figuring out good recipes from dry and canned foods - there are plenty.
And add plenty of snacks to your shopping list!
🍸 Drinks and more drinks
You will most likely run out of drinks so buy as much as you can carry.
It’s a good idea to ask for a cooling box from the charter base and get some ice whenever you can. Saves space in the fridge and you don’t end up melting your groceries in fridge with drinks.
Have plenty of drinking water, we don’t really trust the water from marinas or drink the water made by the watermaker.

Here are our biggest mishaps 👇
🤒 Someone always needs medical attention! Luckily we haven’t had any major incidents or sickness, but we’ve always had someone fall ill, and need a doctor/antibiotics. It’s good to have basic medicine with you, and a plan for what to do if someone gets sick.
❤️🩹 We’ve had some major boat mishaps - from broken steering to engines quitting mid overnight crossing. Listen to your briefing, know who to call if something breaks (or better yet, fix it yourself) and negotiate discounts if something goes south.
🤦♀️ The usual - weather surprises, anchors dragging & things flying overboard. You can’t avoid small mishaps, so be prepared!

Tips for choosing your destination 👇
This is a very subjective topic, and really depends on what your preferences are and what you’re looking for! Where do we typically get started when choosing a sailing charter destination: ✅
1️⃣ Find popular charter destinations by browsing larger charter company sites like @dream_yacht_charter or @navigareyachting ⛵️ These locations (like Caribbean Islands) typically offer biggest sailboat fleets and most options. Check general availability & price levels for boats - these can differ a lot depending on the destination 💸
2️⃣ Weather and when to go: Look at yearly weather averages, focusing on wind strength & direction, potential storms and overall conditions. We typically like to aim for the Shoulder Season, meaning when the season is starting, weather is already quite good and prices reasonable. In Caribbean this for example means just before Xmas, right after the hurricane season🌞🌪
3️⃣ If you’re new to chartering or sailing, also consider the sailing difficulty of the destination. Most destinations require licenses for bareboat chartering and might have more rough sailing conditions. 🌊
4️⃣ At the same time, check flight options to the destination - duration, layovers & cost. ✈️ Flights can nowadays get expensive and some destinations like Bahamas or BVI for example might be hard to get to from Europe. And some charter destinations / companies only allow starting the charter on Saturdays! 🗺🌍
6️⃣ Now you have a shortlist of destinations to dive deeper into and get to the fun stuff: iteneraries, things to see & do.🏊🏝🌞⛵️⛰ @navilyapp is great for checking anchorages and the charter companies offer detailed most typical itenaries to start from. But, the best way is to ask other sailors for tips & advice! ⚓️⛵️
