Sam's Very Cool Albums 2021:
In preparation for the show starting up again this Saturday 10/1/21 I'm gonna write some stuff about some of the music I enjoyed last year. Don't expect anything professional or thoughtful because I'm an idiot and you should all know that by now.
Album: Eternal Blue by Spiritbox (pic 1)
Spiritbox's debut album Eternal Blue represents everything metalcore should be. It perfectly blends the musical foundations of modern metal with moments of catchy pop-hook brilliance.
Listening to this album for the first time brought my straight back to my teenage bedroom where a younger version of me with a big emo fringe heard Bring Me The Horizon's 'Sempiternal' for the first time. This inspired several years of listening to heavier and heavier music, which was something I then drifted away from in the last few years. Fear not! I'm glad to say any chance of my music taste continuing to mature has been resoundingly swept away by 'Eternal Blue'.
In what had become a somewhat stale genre for me, this album stands as a beacon of innovation, individual musical prowess and exceptional songwriting. The guitars take inspiration from djent and math rock, linking with tight drum tracks to provide a crushing backdrop for the truly world-class vocals.
Star Of The Show: Courtney LaPlante (pic 2)
I think Courtney LaPlante is the best metal vocalist on the planet at the moment - come for me in the comments I don't care I will actually fight you.
Her soaring clean vocals provide some of the catchiest moments on Eternal Blue, but it's in the unclean vocals where Courtney shines brightest. Her screams dominate the album, with 3rd single 'Circle With Me' providing a brutal example of this, and her carefree movements from clean to unclean demonstrate a masterful command of vocal technique (for further examples, go on YouTube and watch her perform these songs in one take - it's ridiculous). Especially in a vocal style traditionally dominated by men, her achievements are outstanding.
Favourite song: Sun Killer / Holy Roller
