Tinubu moves school feeding programme from Humanitarian Ministry to Education

President Bola Tinubu has ordered that the school feeding programme be moved from the Humanitarian Ministry to Education after it relaunched on Thursday.

The Minister of Education, Prof Tahir Mamman, disclosed this at a one-day workshop on incremental improvements in the middle ministerial objectives between 2023 and 2027.

According to Tinubu, the relaunch will help address the problems facing out-of-school children, adding that it will help check the learning crisis.

Mamman, speaking on the retreat, stated that its objective is to develop all of the policies to address the problems and to hold different organisations responsible for addressing the issue of out-of-school.

Recall that the school feeding programme was suspended by the administration of former president Muhammadu Buhari.

HARDSHIP: LAGOS PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL RECORDS 100 PERCENT INCREASE IN ADMITTING MAD PEOPLE - CMD SAYS

Hollywood star Marlene Dietrich kissing American soldier Carus Olcott, who was returning to New York during World War II, 1945.

Carus Olcott was 23. His ship was returning from Europe where the 2nd Infantry Division had fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

"I didn't know, at 23, I didn't know necessarily that she was the greatest thing in the world," Olcott said. "They said she was a movie star, I was in the mood for kissing."

Carus Olcott passed away in 2021 at 97 years old.

PHOTOS: Army Unveils Renovated Schools In Kano

The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja has unveiled some remodelled schools in the Tarauni Local Government Area of Kano State.

According to a statement and photos posted on the official X handle of the Nigerian Army on Wednesday, this was part of the NA's Civil-Military intervention in the state.

The remodelled Kundila Schools are Government Upper Basic Secondary School, Government Girls Senior Secondary School and Kundila Nursery and Primary School.

In his remarks, the COAS who was represented by the General Officer Commanding 1 Division NA and Force Commander Operation Whirl Punch, Major General Valentine Okoro, applauded the good people of Kano State for their continuous support to the NA and other security agencies in the face of security challenges.

The statement further read, "The COAS stated that the projects demonstrate the NA's commitment to positively impact on communities as part of its non-kinetic line of operations.

"He added that the projects would significantly contribute to the educational needs of the indigenes and residents of Tarauni, and indeed the good people of Kano State.

"Speaking further, the COAS said more than 255 projects have been completed by the NA across the six geopolitical zones of the country while some are still ongoing in different locations in the country.

"He reaffirmed that the NA will continue to executive projects that are viable while appealing to the people to take ownership of the facilities and ensure their proper maintenance.

"He added that the renovation of the schools was executed with highly standadise and quality materials/ modern state of the earth equipment.

Actress Bukola Arugba Survives Car Crash

Nollywood actress, Bukola Arugba, has revealed that she survived a car crash on Third Mainland Bridge, Lagos.

The accident, she said, occurred on the day before her birthday and resulted in serious damage to her car.

Arugba disclosed this on Wednesday, as she shared a video of the damaged car on her Instagram page.

She captioned the video, “This happened a day to my birthday, I kept this to celebrate and thank God Almighty first, my Keeper, Olowogbogboro Hallelujah.

“We were on the third mainland bridge, driving home gently, the road was free, suddenly a vehicle came from behind as though it wanted to overtake us, but he turned abruptly and gave the car a hard hit that looked intentional, my car started turning, hitting different angles and all we could shout was JESUS.

“It faced the bridge, we thought it was over, but suddenly it made a turn, and sat at the edge of the bridge, surely there is power in Jesus name.

“We came down unhurt, and started calling friends, while waiting, I started sensing something bad was about to happen again, then I started praying at the top of my voice by the car. None of the passing vehicles stopped cos it was late. I had barely stopped praying when another vehicle came from nowhere and gave the car a harder and stronger bash repositioning the car by automatically lifting the car to the road.

“You don’t want to imagine the state I was left in. How and why would my car be bashed twice within the space of an hour? If this was plotted in a movie scene it would be tagged “unrealistic”. But hey? This is real!”

The actress celebrated her birthday on Tuesday.

We don’t recognise 27 Rivers House members who dumped PDP — APC Assembly Forum

The All Progressives Congress, APC, States Assembly Forum, ASAF, has declared that it was yet to recognise as its members the 27 Rivers State House of Assembly members who dumped the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to join the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC.

The Forum (ASAF) is the umbrella body of APC state assemblies members.

The group’s decision came at the end of an emergency meeting on Tuesday in Abuja, where it, among other things, deliberated on the status of the newly-defected lawmakers.

Speaking at the end of the meeting, Director General of the forum, Ambassador Fubara Dagogo, said that the forum deliberated much on the development in Rivers State House of Assembly and agreed that it would not be in a hurry to admit the defected lawmakers since their defection is still being challenged at the court.

However, Ambassador Dagogo welcomed the decision of the lawmakers to embrace the APC.

He said that ASAF will be ready to accept them as well as other defectors from other states, but insisted that it must be done under a credible and transparent situation.

The Director General had earlier pleaded with President Bola Tinubu to save the nation’s democracy by intervening in the Rivers State crisis.

He appreciated the recent move by the President to restore peace in the state.

Dagogo, however, disclosed that ASAF will deliberate further and probably admit the 27 lawmakers into its forum when it will meet again on February 18, 2024, ahead of its planned Geneva retreat in Switzerland.

The forum which also sued for peace in Rivers state, admonished the citizens to remain calm, just as it advised the Governor Fubara and other political stakeholders in the state to key into the bold move by the President and work towards restoring a lasting peace and solution to the crisis.

Pope’s same-sex marriage blessing: Church’s principles unchanged — Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria

The Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, CSN, has reaffirmed that the Church’s teachings on the sacrament of marriage remain unchanged, despite the Vatican’s recent decision to allow blessings for same-sex couples.

This statement comes in response to the Pope’s recent directive and emphasises that marriage within the Church is still viewed as a lifelong union between a man and a woman.

An official from the Secretariat, who spoke in confidence because the Catholic Bishop’s Conference of Nigeria has not publicly reacted, however, noted, “It’s crucial to reiterate that this does not change the Church’s teaching on the sacrament of marriage.

“The Church’s view on same-sex marriage remains unaltered.”

According to him, the decision to permit blessings for same-sex couples under specific circumstances is seen as a measure to acknowledge the lives and experiences of all individuals, while still upholding the core beliefs and teachings of the Church.

“This move emphasizes that the Church’s role is to guide and bless, rather than judge, its members,” he added.

Elucidating on the essence of a blessing, the official explained, “The essence of a blessing is to foster people’s trust in God, irrespective of their circumstances.

“The Church’s role is to guide and bless its members, not to judge them.”

However, the official clarified that blessings for same-sex couples should not be equated with the sacrament of marriage, nor should they form part of any civil union or wedding ceremonies.

The Church’s priests will discern on a case-by-case basis, ensuring that the Church’s accessibility to people in every situation is not hindered or prohibited.

The CSN official stated, “The Church is a place of refuge, a place of love, and a place of blessing for all.

Dele Momodu blasts Tinubu over Wike, Fubara peace deal

Momodu said Tinubu’s intervention in the crisis between Governor Sim Fubara of Rivers State and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike was legally absurd.

In a bid to resolve the crisis, Tinubu brokered a peace deal between Wike and Fubara at the Presidential Villa in Abuja yesterday.

During the meeting Tinubu issued an eight-point resolution as part of the peace deal.

Reacting on Instagram, Momodu wrote: “The directives to Rivers State by a Federal President is really absurd in legal terms. No President can be a Headmaster of both State and Federal.

“What manner of democracy are we practicing that allows a President to intervene in the internal affairs of opposition parties and over-rules the Constitution unchallenged, and our politicians comply as if they are in a slave camp.

“Opposition parties must vehemently oppose this brazen attempt at forcing a one-party dictatorship on Nigeria.”

Friends Mourn As Man Dies Three Days To His Wedding

Friends of a groom-to-be, Abraham Basif, have been thrown into mourning after he died three days before his wedding.

A Facebook user, Theophilus Baba, announced Basif’s death on his page on Wednesday.

Sharing a picture of the deceased, Baba wrote, “Death of a young promising man hurt me to my bone but God knows it all. I never knew the day I came to see you in the hospital was our last meeting on earth, brother. I am supposed to be typing congratulations on your picture this week Friday and Saturday but we judge God faithful in all.”

Checks on the page of Basif showed that his last post dated November 29, 2023, was an invite to his wedding scheduled to hold on Friday, December 22, and Saturday, December 23.

Basif had shared the wedding invitation and pre-wedding photos of himself and his fiancee with the caption, “He made all things beautiful in his time. Please join us as we celebrate the faithfulness of God over our lives.”

Following Baba’s announcement, other friends of the deceased also mourned Basif on their pages.

Suleiman Naphysah wrote, “I can't believe the news. This is so hard to bear for everyone who knows you. Rest on, Abraham Basif.”

Voiceman Austine wrote, “Rest in peace, brother. What will now happen to your wedding next tomorrow, sir? Heart broken.”

Ex-senator Sentenced To Life Imprisonment Over Haiti President's Murder

A US court on Tuesday sentenced a former Haitian senator to life in prison for his role in the assassination of the Caribbean country's President, Jovenel Moise, in 2021.

Clad in a brown prison uniform, handcuffed and with shackles around his ankles, Joseph John, 52, pleaded for mercy before the verdict was announced in a federal court in Miami.

John said he never intended to murder Moise but instead wanted him brought before Haitian courts for his alleged mismanagement of the country.

The plot spiraled out of control when other conspirators decided to assassinate the president,bJohn said, adding that he believed that backing out at that point would have gotten him killed.

"Your honour, have mercy on me," he implored the judge, speaking in French. "I'm sorry for this heinous crime that should not have happened."

The former senator had admitted earlier to providing vehicles and other resources to support the plot, as well as meeting with several other conspirators in both Haiti and Florida, according to court documents.

John was the third person indicted over the July 2021 slaying of Moise at his residence near the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince. The United States has jurisdiction in the case because the plot was partly organized in Florida, home to a sizeable Haitian diaspora.

A businessman holding dual Haitian and Chilean citizenship, Rodolphe Jaar, and retired Colombian military officer German Rivera were sentenced earlier this year to life in prison for their role in Moise's assassination.

The 53-year-old Moise was gunned down on July 7, 2021 at his private residence by a hired group of about 20 military-trained Colombians. His security detail did not intervene to protect him.

Haiti has spiraled into deeper chaos since Moise's death. No election has been held and he has not been succeeded.

PHOTOS: Lagos Demolishes Illegal Structures Around Schools

Officials of the Monitoring Enforcement and Compliance Department of the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, on Monday, demolished illegal structures built around primary schools and other areas of the state.

The spokesperson for the ministry, Kunle Adeshina, revealed this in photos shared on his X handle on Tuesday evening.

According to him, the operation followed an attack on the pre-enforcement team last week

He wrote, "Following an attack on a pre-enforcement team last week, a reinforced team, yesterday, mobilised on enforcement to LA Primary School, Ago Hausa, Babani Street, Boundary Road, Ajeromi, removing all the illegal structures attached to the perimeter fence of the school."

In a separate post, Adeshina wrote, "Operatives from the Monitoring Enforcement and Compliance dept of MOE&WR on Monday intensified its enforcement drive with the removal of all illegal structures on the perimeter fence of LA Primary School, Bakare Faro Street, Mosafejo Bus stop, Amukoko."
