Subhuman Film Fanzine Former Publication For the Suave, Eccentric Film Buff Demon SUBHUMAN was a 16-page Xerox publication edited and published by Cecil Doyle between 1986-1991.

It featured reviews & opinions on unusual horror and sleaze films, usually released on videocassette (which was the dominant home-viewing system of the time). It had an eye-popping yet simple cut-n-paste graphic design and also featured sick comic strips, illustrations, interviews with folks in the business as well as reviews of outrageous films (including some that never existed). Regular contrib

utors included familiar names in the 'zine world of the 1980s including Greg Goodsell, Kris Gilpin, David Dodge, Dom Salemi, Dave Szurek and others.

encountered this vintage ditty from the UK online....fanzine collection (possibly for sale with nice mentions of SUBHUMAN and many other favorite movie zines of the era including the one-off precursor to SUBHUMAN, a zine called BOOM!): Fanzines:
The bulk of these are from the late 80s / early 90s, when the UK and US fan scenes exploded in a rush of creativity and DIY punk enthusiasm. I’ve split these up into groups – the first has the stand-out titles, usually in runs (either full or close to it) whereas the second is a grab-bag of odds and sods. Please note that especially professional fanzines may be in the ‘magazine’ listings elsewhere on the site.
Cream of the Crop
The following are the best to have come out of the late 80s zine revolution – they may be professionally produced or they may not, but the content represents the best the period had to offer. Postage by arrangement depending on buyer’s location, weight of package etc, but it will most likely be 25-50p per title for UK delivery.
BOOM! (a great one-off from the Subhuman stable) £1.50
GORE GAZETTE 1-40, 47-49, 53, 55-59, 64, 67, 68, 70, 71, 73, 76, 77, 81, 83-97, 99 (legendary N.Y. splatter zine, second only to Sleazoid Express, by the wonderful Right Reverend Rick Sullivan. A landmark horror / sleaze mag; these back issues are now very hard to come by) 74 issues - £140 the lot or enquire about individual issues
HIGH-TECH TERROR 5-15, 19-30, 32-40, 42 (another amazing review-based Yankzine) £1.25 each or £40 the lot
JOHN CARPENTER FILE 9 (astonishingly researched mag by a serious devotee – loads of reviews and interviews) £1.50
MONSTER 32-36 (more fine Yank stuff) £1.25 each or £5.50 the lot
NAKED EYE 1 (intelligent analysis of genre and arthouse film) £2
NAKED! SCREAMING! TERROR! (another superior yank zine dealing in eurohorror) £2.50
NECRONOMICON 4 (similar to Naked Eye, juicy contents) £3.25
PORNORAMA 1 (glossy and impressive zine about the p**n movie biz – heavily illustrated) £2.25
ROLLERDERBY 2/3 – 5, 9-16, 18, GENERATION L SPECIAL (indescribable magazine from Lisa Suckdog. Addictive and fascinating) £36 the lot or £4 each
SAMHAIN 1-27, 29, 35, 36, 50 (the first and best) 1-27 £50 the lot; otherwise £2 each
SHOCK CINEMA 3, 8, 9 (great reviews from the peerless Steve Puchalski – these issues now rare) £6.50 each
SLIMETIME 14-18 (what Steve Puchalski did before Shock Cinema. No-one writes like Puchalski) £6.50 each
SUBHUMAN 9, 10, 12, 13 (utterly wonderful zine from Lousiana covering all manner of cinematic bizarrities – ‘Sheer Filth’ was heavily influenced by this) £3 each
TRASH COMPACTOR (issue number? - amazing feature on John Ashley plus lots of other good stuff) £4.50
UNGAWA 2 (wild prozine featuring Betty Page, Frederick Brown etc - from the renowned Cathal Tohill – now scarce) £6
VIDEOMANIA / VIDEO DRIVE-IN 1-15 (another Yank zine, demonstrating that, for the most part, they do this sort of thing effortlessly better than the Brits) £2 each or £25 the lot
VIDEOOZE 2 (quality Eurosleaze coverage) £3

A few years old - but - nice piece on writer/filmmaker David Flint who used to publish SHEER FILTH back in the day. Especially appreciated this part:

What was your favourite fanzine?
"The one that I based stuff on when I started was an American ‘zine called Subhuman!, which covered a lot of old fifties films and very weird stuff. Sheer Filth was in the same format as that, had the same page count – you could tell I was very influenced by them".

"I’d been staying with a filmmaker and brought a couple of his films back and was stopped by customs, arrested, and thrown into a cell for hours"

There are a couple of different issues of SUBHUMAN ( #13 & #15) up on eBay right now:
