Did you know that Wave’s founding editor Yubakar, long time writer Tsering Choden and other भूपू Wave folks started another magazine called Y! During its short run between 2006 and 2011, Y! left quite an impression. Its striking covers didn’t just feature actors and models but also included athletes, photo journalists, up and coming fashion designers (hello @troublewithprabal) and politicians like Gagan Thapa (@gagan.k.thapa). Its cover stories and opinion pieces (published both in Nepali and English) touched on wide ranging issues from the ongoing peace process, nationalism, migration to fashion and sports. The magazine did an excellent job exploring the contemporary socio-political and cultural landscape of Nepal and how it affected young Nepalis.

Launched in 1994, Wave became an instant hit because of its fresh take on music, fashion, youth culture, and the concerns of young urban Nepalis. And how can one forget their iconic lyrics book with guitar chords (this was when the internet wasn’t as accessible) and the glossy poster of international musicians that came with each month! It was also one of the very few and first Nepali media outlets to have a vibrant online presence through its website. Sadly, much of it is no longer available in the public domain.
