A letter from our editor:

Abyssal Festival 2023 sales are looking a bit sketchy, so here's the customary "I'm going to be frank with you..." post.

So far we've sold around 35 tickets out of 160, which isn't very much given the event is only two weeks away. However, at this stage we cannot (and don't want to) cancel the event, so we may have to take a hit.

On the other hand, maybe we're over-stressing and loads of people will buy tickets on the door. It's been that way in previous years, but by this point last year we'd sold around 60 tickets online, so there's been a clear shift.

This year has been very tough economically for nearly everyone in the country, and when money's tight it gets harder to plan longer-term. It also gets harder to justify doing fun non-essential things like going to concerts.

If you're coming to Abyssal this year, it would be hugely appreciated if you could share the event and page with your networks.

Bring your friends, make a day out of it.

For our next 'zine we dive into all things Tolkien.

JRR Tolkien’s writings, and their subsequent adaptations, have had a seismic impact on our culture, including the heavy music we hold dear. After turning to the author’s legendarium as a source of comfort in this difficult time, the result was The Tolkien Issue, a new zine exploring his most famous works, including both the valid criticisms therein and their potential as symbols of hope. Those of you that have followed our work closely in recent years may be aware that members of the AN team are huge fans of FromSoftware’s Soulsborne series. While taking a break following the completion of our last print issue, we put our efforts into a new zine combining our usual content with the worlds of Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls and Bloodborne.

This zine is a labour of love and a testament to the beauty of this immense series. The Soulsborne Issue drops 19th February – pre-orders are live now at the link below. Cover art by Greyson Kelly Design.
