HOW TO GROW YOUR HAIR- A BEGINNER'S GUIDE
Are you someone that is just tired of your hair? Have you searched and searched and TRIED to grow your hair but your hair is still obstinately at the same length? Are you already wondering whether to just cut your hair and accept the fact that long hair is your portion? If so, this post is for you.
For you to grow your hair, you first need to understand certain things about hair growth. The most important thing you need to know is that no one is destined to have short hair, and black women's hair CAN GROW, WHETHER TO WAIST LENGTH OR ANYWHERE, even if you don't have the "genetics". If you believe black people's hair can't grow, why not check out people with dreads?
Hair grows from 0.25-1 inch every month. That means the average growth for all black women is 0.5 inch every month. Note that your hair can grow faster or slower than that. Note also that this growth WILL HAPPEN whether or not you use any magic cream or product, or whether you're taking care of your hair or not. At least a portion of your hair will still keep on growing at this rate all your life.
But let's calculate using 0.5 inch. If you grew hair 0.5 inch every month, you should have 6 inches by the end of the year. If you have been keeping your hair for 3 years, you already have 18 inches. 18 inches means midback length for most women.
Then, you might want to ask. WHY IS IT THAT I DON'T HAVE WAIST LENGTH HAIR YET? I'VE BEEN GROWING MY HAIR FOR YEARS NOW. IS IT THAT I AM CURSED WITH VERY SLOW RATE OF GROWTH?
The answer is no, you are not cursed. Even if your hair grew 0.25 inch a month, you should have 9 inches at the end of three years. The reason why most black women don't have long hair is due to BREAKAGE.
You might think, "Are you sure you aren't overreacting? Breakage isn't a big deal." But IT IS. Everytime you comb your hair, you break your hair, especially the tips. Everytime you handle your hair in fact, hair falls out. Everytime you go to the hairdresser to make your hair, they comb it agressively and your hair keeps falling out BUT YOU DON'T NOTICE. Your hair is growing and will continue to grow, but as long as you don't take care of the hair you already have, IT WILL KEEP BREAKING.
But then, you might say, "I still think it's genetics. Some people don't take care of their hair and it still grows." Yes, this is true. Some people have good "length retention genes" where their hair can withstand any amount of manipulation and still be fine. But that is not the case for YOU, or ME, or the majority of women with long hair now, in fact! But they still have long hair!
I use myself as an example now. I grew my hair for FOUR GOOD YEARS and it didn't reach shoulder length. My hair was 4-6 inches after growing it for four years! When I noticed, I started meeting my friends with longer hair, asking them what they did to their hair. I ran to the market to buy Shea butter and coconut oil on their advice, and when I applied it on my hair it didn't grow overnight as I was expecting. Anyway, I cut it due to disgust, thinking I was doomed forever. Now that I now know how to take proper care of my hair, my hair got to 6 INCHES IN JUST 10 MONTHS (before I trimmed off some dead ends). If I didn't learn about hair, I would have spent my whole life thinking it wasn't in my destiny to grow long hair.
To grow long hair, you need to understand one simple fact: black hair is fragile. If you really, really want to grow hair, make sure you have this at the back of your mind. Take care of it like an egg. Don't comb your hair dry. Don't do hairstyles that will pull your scalp from your head. Don't put it under a weave and forget about it. Take care of it EVERYDAY. Moisturize. Use the proper products and tools. Know about the treatments you need for a healthy hair journey such as protein treatments, deep conditioning treatments, rinses, etc.To know more, check out my posts on this group.
Stop saying "If you have hair you have hair" because that's a destructive and wrong sentiment. Anyone can "have hair." Do you think all the black women with long waist length hair just left it alone? NO. They worked for it! You might not see their efforts from the pictures, but they put in their work, and you're seeing their results.
In addition, stop asking "What do you use for your hair?". Honestly, it is your job to do research if you want your hair to grow. Once you give yourself a good hair regimen, you'll notice that you won't even care what anyone else is using for their hair because your own hair is growing.
Remember, your hair WILL grow, once you put in the effort.
