February 8, 1968, The Orangeburg Massacre occurred, after three nights of racial tension over the efforts by students of the SC State College, Claflin College, and others three South Carolina State students, Samuel Hammond Jr., (age 18), Delano Middleton (age 17), and Henry Smith (age 18) were shot and killed by highway patrolmen as they opened fire in unarmed protesters.
