Masked Woodswallow, getting stuck into the nectar. There were many thousands of these and their cousins, the White-browed Woodswallow near Thargomindah in June this year.

I have long held a love for our Woodswallows and have now filmed all Australian species on the latest gear ( 4k ).

That's the trouble with upgrading as you inevitably want improve your captures.

Horsfield's bronze-cuckoo.

The next bird from our Western Queensland adventure is the Flock Bronzewing. They were surprisingly tricky to locate this time as there was water laying as far as the eye could see in places, meaning that the birds were dispersed.

We saw smaller flocks in Sturt National Park on the way home. It was fascinating to hear the sound of the wings and their beautiful call before they alighted briefly on the water's surface for a few sips.

Red-backed Kingfisher

These dry country Kingfishers were a regular sighting on our recent trip to Western QLD.

Their call can be heard from some distance away.

It's amazing how some of these species survive without any requirement for water.

Every time we go out West, these guys are on the wishlist. Just love their calls and subtly beautiful plumage. I managed some nice sequences of mixed flocks of Major Mitchel's and Galah's. The Major Mitchel's were the dominant species when it came to the feed trees.

Am I pretty enough?

It's understandable why Mr Rose Robin gets most of the attention.

For me, the lady is still so adorable. She gently goes about her business ( gleaning insects ) and tends to keep under the radar.

Furthermore, we only get the females and immature at our place but I'm not complaining.

Got to love that splash of pink.

Banded Lapwing. Bedourie, QLD.

I have always considered this species somewhat sparsely distributed across the Australian continent, naturally to a variable degree ie some regions they can be more densely populated.

For many species, a period of rainfall can change populations very quickly. This was the case on our recent trip out to the Channel country.

You can see from the first capture, just how much new growth and vegetation there was for a semi-arid region.

We were seeing Banded Lapwings daily and often with young ones.

They are a feisty species when breeding and will confront the observer with copious amounts of verbal protest and accompanying flyovers, designed to deter any perceived threat.

My sequences were shot from the car alleviating the need for such confrontation.

Inland Dotterel.

Birdsville track. SA.

Based on prior desert trips, we knew that the Inland Dotterels possessed special powers to evaporate before your eyes.

That is making the assumption that one can locate them in the first place.

On this trip, we drove through hundreds of KLM's of suitable territory before finding any but were given a tip off for an area to look.

Even then, they were tricky and only found our first one when watching a Gibberbird. I spent a while with this pair, in the late afternoon, eventually filming the female sitting in her scrape, presumably in readiness to lay her eggs.

later in the trip, we found several more groups, one being around 50 in number.

This was a cool experience and unfolded in a classic way ie finding one bird, only to discover there were many more present. Once this species turns it's back on you, they literally vanish.

About 20 years ago, I was privileged to rescue an Inland Dotterel chick off the road, to be reunited with it's parents. It was a good day.

There were loads of Crested Bellbirds on our Western QLD trip.

I was pleasantly surprised how approachable they were, compared to previous trips. Could it be that they are easier outside of the breeding season?

It has to be one of the most evocative calls of the Mulga and Channel country. You have to love the way that they throw their calls in such a way that it's hard ( at least for me ) to detect which direction they are calling from.

Another fascinating thing to observe was the way the female was always 'in tow' seemingly from dawn to dusk.

Red-capped Robin.

The next bird from our tour out 'West' is the Red-capped Robin.

Probably, one of the most obvious little Songbirds throughout the Mulga country, they are remarkably endearing and confiding.

One of their traits is their inquisitive nature. I tend to sit in one place for extended periods of time as my passion is to document bird behavior.

Subliminal questions when contemplating a particular scene may be 'why is the bird here ? what is it feeding on,? passing through or resident? is it nesting? where is the partner ? etc etc

On several occasions, when nothing seems to be 'on' a Red-capped Robin appeared and sat incredibly close, often behind the shoulder or too close to focus.

This one sat long enough to get some sequences.

I have the scars to prove it. On our recent journey out to the Channel country, we encountered hundreds of Brown Falcons. Often overlooked due to their 'common status' I really have a soft spot for them and took the time to enjoy their many plumage variations.

They have surprised me with their agility over the years and I have seen them take Fairy Martins 'on the wing'. I have also see them hunt skillfully as a pair and take down a Nankeen Kestrel.

Most species of raptor seem to be much more approachable in desert areas and these beautiful Falcons are no exception. With this in mind, I commando crawled to within 3 meters of this individual and he was completely unphased.

He had clearly just finished his morning tea and the remains can be seen on the upper Mandible.

I left the bird in the same position as I found it after 20 minutes. It did bring home that I'm not as comfortable in these unnatural positions as I once was.

PS. They remind me somewhat of the Prairie Falcon of Northern America.

I have just returned from a trip out West, specifically, the Channel Country, a brief extension to the lower gulf, Birdsville track, Stezelecki track and back through Sturt NP.

The country is, on the whole looking amazing and we encountered some prolific birdlife.

Each time I go, it seems to offer a different experience.

Part of my mission was to film 'bird events' ie flocks of species and bird behavior for a new Documentary.

Over the following weeks, I'll post a couple of stills as I process the images.

Spinifex Pigeon. ((Geophaps plumifera)

We had a visit from the local bird and rodent eater. The lovely ( female ) Grey Goshawk is a regular here but I have seldom seen them down low. Such a powerful raptor, unless you compare it to the European Goshawk !!

Just a Brown Cuckoo-dove. Or is it ?

So many of our common birds have incredible plumage when seen in good light.

The iridescence on the collar and mantle is something to behold.

Having 'cut my teeth' with binoculars since a child, I always got a rush discovering the details and identifying the bird from a field guide. I cherish those memories.

Spangled Drongo.

Only in certain lights can you appreciate the delicate plumage of these guys.

They are incredibly vocal, especially when there is a raptor around, but other species also give them a hard time due to their habit of killing small birds including nestlings.

Juvenile Emerald Dove.

This young bird presented nicely in the dappled light before bursting to cover. I love the colour palette of the mantle, where the adult Emerald feathers are breaking through.

These guys spend most of their time on the ground but can sometimes be observed in the lower and mid strata where they also nest.

This individual will have to be alert to the ever present dangers of the local Grey Goshawks that look for any opportunity for an avian meal.

Black-faced Monarch. These active and vocal little flycatchers arrive from Papua new-guinea for the Australian Summer and settle down the East coast of Australia.

They hunt for insects in the mid and upper strata. Once, they have raise their young, they undertake their return journey North.

A study of the endearing Spectacled Monarch.

These delightful and delicate little birds hawk around the forest edge looking for insects. They can be heard from some distance as they establish and confirm their territories.
Spectacled Monarchs love to have a bath, especially when they are going through a molt. They build a beautifully woven nest of small sticks and lichen in a fork, often between 3 and 6 metres high.
