Sacred Tribes Journal an academic journal and website for the ongoing study of new religious movements Why the title, Sacred Tribes Journal? Thus, Sacred Tribes Journal.

The purpose of this international online journal is to explore the study of religion, including new religious movements, world religions, and popular spiritualities and "religion-like" self-identities, in a scholarly and multidisciplary fashion. In order to accomplish this task, this journal draws together the combined insights of sociologists, anthropologists, religious studies scholars, theologi

ans, as well as missiologists, and those from other disciplines from around the world. One other feature is that from time to time special editions of this journal will be dedicated to engagement with those from a variety of religious and spiritual pathways. These editions will practice and demonstrate a dialogical approach to examining key topics in religion in our time. We very consciously wish to place our discussion of respective beliefs with others on a footing that from the outset signals our willingness to treat them as human beings made in God's image. We, as evangelical Christians, belong to sets and sub-sets of people groups defined via specific religious beliefs, practice, and social paradigms. Likewise, a Zen Buddhist belongs to sets and sub-sets of groups rooted in specific religious paradigms. By using the term "tribe" to describe such groupings, whether Christian, Buddhist, Pagan, or agnostic (to name a few), we hope to make clear our aim: dialogue and exchanges of information, yes, but even more, exchanges of our respective visions of the sacred that mean so much to each of us. As evangelicals, we do indeed have a specific mission in mind. When appropriate in this forum, we wish to communicate Christian discipleship to those of other Sacred Tribes. Yet as we do so, we hope that our presentation can be seasoned with wisdom and humility. And we believe that the first part of humility is to truly listen, to deeply understand those we say we want dialogue with.

Religion continues to play a significant role in the spiritual marketplace of the religiously unregulated West. The corresponding decline of religious fervor once associated with the secularization thesis is challenged by the notion that a significant majority of Westerners identify themselves as religious and/or spiritual. Today’s Christian will be confronted with multiple religious worldviews, whether in ministry, the workplace or their neighborhood.

Among the many projects I've been involved with, this is up there on the list of most important. Grateful for my colleague John W. Morehead and his years of experience engaging in conversations with people from different religions. The Western religious landscape has been evolving for decades and John introduces us to a compendium of essays by leading evangelicals scholars who have been wrestling with post-Christendom spiritualities for many years.

In the early 1990s evangelicals from a variety of countries began to approach the subject of new religious movements in different ways. This included those from Australia, Denmark, the UK and the U…

Literally, the Buddhism of Tibet, but more widely defined beyond the cultural-religious ethnicity of Tibetans. Tibetan Buddhism is spread through Tibet, Nepal, India (diasporan Tibetans, and Ladhakh), Bhutan, the Chinese provinces of Qinghai, Yunnan, Sichuan, Gansu, and Inner Mongolia, Mongolia, and the Russian provinces of Buryatia, Tuva, and Kalmykia. Since the diaspora of the Tibetans in the 1960s, Tibetan Buddhism has spread globally, especially into Europe, North America, and Australasia. It continues to be readily accessible due in large to the globe-trotting of the Dalai Lama, the endorsement of celebrities, the active placement of lamas into western locations, promotion by the media, and a growing web presence.

Nearly fifty years ago Richard Carrington wrote:

There is a terrible finality about the word extinction. The death of individuals, even of our own species, we have learnt to accept, comforting ourselves with the thought that our immortality lies, if not in heaven, at least in the vigor that we can pass on to future generations. But the death of whole races or kinds of animals inspires an altogether more melancholy emotion … If we are reflective people we must be saddened most of all by the thought that man himself has too often played a prominent role in the final tragedy.

As religious pluralism and the uniqueness and particularity of Christ develop into major issues for the twenty-first century, the Christian church cannot afford the luxury of overlooking the impact of these spiritual alternatives. Some of the most influential and challenging alternative movements include the Brotherhood of the Cross and Star, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Iglesia Ni Cristo, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Mahikari, Neo-Paganism, New Age (or New Spirituality), Rastafarians,Santeria, Siddha Yoga, Umbanda, and emerging Do-It-Yourself Spiritualities. Although the Western evangelical community has produced a number of popular books and articles in response to several (but not all) of these movements, the bulk of these have been in the area of apologetic refutation of doctrine as heresy in contrast to Christian orthodoxy.

New religious movements, New Age, Neo-Pagan, and minor non-Christian spiritual movements are a global phenomenon, and for over one hundred years have been the focus of evangelical critique and apol…

Sacred Tribes Journal is a gift to all of us who want to be knowledgeable about new religious movements. Too often we have settled for a doctrinal “check list” approach to our assessments of these movements. This is a journal that probes the deeper currents—the conditions out of which they emerge and the hopes and fears that shape their teachings—so that we can be more effective in calling their adherents to the abundant life that can be found in Jesus Christ.

Sacred Tribes is back, and with a new link. Michael Cooper writes:

A few years ago, I had the privilege of being one of the editors of Sacred Tribes Journal along with John W. Morehead. We amassed contributions from leading scholars about Mormonism, Jehovah's Witnesses, contemporary Paganism (including Wicca and Druidry), Satanism, and much more. John and I are stepping back into the co-editorship of the journal and making all the articles available for download. If you are interested about the religions in your neighborhood, we invite you to subscribe to the journal. It is free.
