One of my proudest accomplishments of 2023 was creating sounds for Marvel’s new series: Echo. I hope everyone watches it. ( brought me to tears!) Echo features a Choctaw hero. She was born with a difference - she’s deaf - also she’s an amputee who rocks a prosthetic leg like a BADASS! Echo (played by Alaqua Cox) represents a triple minority, and yet she triumphs in her world, tapping into Spiritual Powers that transcend time and space and connects her directly to her Indigenous Ancestors.
Alaqua, shines alongside Vincent D’Onofrio, and many familiar faces from the shot-in-Oklahoma series “Reservation Dogs.” But In my opinion, many scenes are carried by the brilliant acting of Devery Jacobs (my favorite Rez Dog!) as well as Zahn McClarnon and Graham Greene. Just as was the case with “Reservation Dogs,” “Echo” has Indigenous creatives helping to steer the narrative. All film making decisions were a collaborative effort with the Choctaw Nation’s Cultural Council.
I feel uplifted and filled with hope for the continued focus on stories like Echo. I’m grateful for the focus on Native cultures too. I’m proud to have been a small part of a cultural milestone for Native Americans. ( AND.. If you know of any film makers needing great post sound work, DM me!)
“This is our chance to uplift Indigenous voices and let the world know that we’re still here” - Alaqua Cox
