GARDEN UPDATE: 1 Year Later

Here is the front yard pictured exactly one year apart, to the day!

I cannot express how much I absolutely ADORE my garden. I had so much fun building this Tudor style garden with Mr. Donner last year, and I love that we get to just plant this year, no building!

I'm looking forward to the peas again, those were so tasty last year. I'm also excited about some new things I planted this year; I've got tomatoes that have started putting out their first flowers, garlic with scapes coming now, and a very pretty bed of potato foliage 🥰

Finally getting back to my ceiling painting project! I've been plugging away at it daily for a couple weeks now, and likely have at least a full month more to go. It's amazing how long it takes 😱

I made some paint brushes! They came out so cute 🥰

Useful however....

Eh.

*Usable* is the best I can say 😆

The paint was great though! I've always loved seeing the cute little medieval painters with their paint shell palettes, so it was delightful to make my own. It's a gouache made with oxide pigments, calcium carbonate, and gum arabic.

(The paintbrushes were made via 15th century Cennini's Il Libro dell'Arte instructions. Mediocre results likely from my own substitutions and not the instructions 🫠)

Holy moly, I feel so pretty in these pictures from ( https://instagram.com/alauracreative ) - this was the staircase at the Chicago ball this last March and it was so perfect for pictures in a way that my sewing room just can't match 😂

I'll admit, I felt just okayish in this 1890s dress I'd just made, but wasn't sure that the whole look was working when I looked in the mirror that night. These pictures changed my mind, I feel flipping gorgeous 😭 thanks for the amazing pictures Alaura!

I Spoke Too Soon: A Slideshow

I must have tempted fate by saying that I was done with bed-related things because the pups ripped open a hole in one of their dog beds and redistributed wool fluff everywhere. It had previously been repaired (the yellow patch), but I felt like it was time for a whole new cover.

I guess I got to make that wool mattress after all huh?

Second project of the year is done! So pleased at how it turned out and also so happy to have absolutely nothing to do with beds and bedding for a long while. The duality of "yay it's done!" and "oh thank goodness it's done, I never want to look at it again" cracks me up every time.

Hair update that no one asked for 😜 (including some Before pictures for comparison, and the discovery that I really did go out in public with my back half zipped...woops) Semi-natural was fun, but I'm happy to have vivid color again!

I still have not sewn that buckle.

A quick mini project: a bustle foundation! Sometimes called a lobster tail for obvious reasons. Also called a tournure for less obvious reasons.

I haven't sewn on the waist buckle yet though, I got distracted with hair nonsense instead. Tomorrow! I will totally do it tomorrow 🤞

I was reading up on 16th century rushed floors and while the correct variety of rush does not grow near me, I still had some fun playing with these cattail leaves instead! I think I collected them far too late in the year for them to be flexible enough for the technique I had in mind, but I'll try to catch them next year 🤞

I finally fixed the straps on this fluorescent red/pink dress I made almost a year ago! I was inspired by the long spaghetti strap ties I made on the recent red velvet top, and figured I'd see if that would work well on this one too, and I also extended the V of the neckline down a couple more inches and now I love it much much more! Big comfy circle dresses ftw!

I'm leaving London after a lovely visit! I have never been here before, it was so neat to see all the buildings and little shops - and so much underground travel! I loved seeing folks, and my favorite souvenir is the novelty photobooth with (although the new piercing from is a close second). Excited to board the soon! Never been on a cruise, hopefully it'll be amazing 🎉

Spent the day making a mock-up! The pattern still needs a ton of changes to get the look I'm after, but this feels like an excellent starting point. Yay for old sheets, I've made at least three different mock-ups out of this set alone.
