Julius was the keynote for BE Reinvents in Penang, Malaysia.
This is one of the most vibrant events in Southeast Asia.
Here are some trends noted:
// Business is booming in Asia
Events are among the fastest-growing sectors in Asia. Most countries had a late reopening compared to Europe and North America, so their 2022/2023 moment is happening now. IBTM has just launched a new show for the Asian market. Will IMEX be next?
// Sustainability is NOT a trend
Asian event professionals and Malaysians specifically take sustainability very seriously. More than their counterparts in other parts of the world. Their commitment is at the destination, venue, and planner levels. This trifecta is the only chance to make sustainable events a reality.
// Human connection is a key objective
Asian attendees may have a different way to connect at events. Yet, there is a need to go beyond business cards and connect deeper. The role event professionals play in facilitating that connection is vital.
// Asia gets the content opportunity
Attending events here tells you a lot about the future of our industry. Julius' keynote session recap was on LinkedIn an hour after he spoke. The role of events as content creation opportunities is very well perceived here.
// DEI is not a PR campaign
The commitment of the planners to enforce DEI across the board is incredible here. The whole event started with Deafbeat, a collective of deaf drum performers. I also spoke with Aveena Devi, a motivational speaker born with spina bifida. She shared how true inclusion is still far away as differently abled attendees don’t want to feel special but part of the collective experience.
// Destination will impact your event
8K buyer event planners attended IMEX and IBTM over the past two months. The destination selection they make will be crucial for their event. In the age of experiences, choosing destinations that deliver beyond room and attrition rates is paramount for planners.
// Polarization could kill our industry
If you work in events, you understand how there is no space for polarization. Collaboration is a big topic in Asia, opening instead of closing, connection instead of isolation. Travel, hospitality, and events only work when countries are open to each other. Let’s hope 2024 opens up to more of that.
