We re-visit and re-patronize the series of illustrated historical county atlases published in Canada between 1875 and 1885. These atlases remain widely known in their respective regions and are the 'go-to' history book in most counties and geanologligists each of its printings, the Atlas remains the best most recognizable local history book ever. Twenty-eight of these “patronized” atlases were pro
duced in Canada – those represented purchased the pages to show their homes, businesses, farms and families – to be part of the historical record. Patrons included elected officials, landmark buildings, important institutions, proud farmers and prominent people; their portraits, prosperous lands and grand homes, all preserved for future generations. Following the tradition of the 1870s and repeating the successes of this period edition, we invited a select number of individuals and organizations to participate as Patrons in these improved editions of the atlases. This exciting project aims to improve the familiar Historical Atlas of the County of York, filling gaps in the historical record between the first edition of 1878 and today. The atlas of 1878 was a portrait of the history of the day – those portrayed on its pages were citizens, businesses and events current in their day. Today you and I, our neighbours, our businesses, churches, councils and events deserve a similar place in the historical atlas. Much has transpired since 1878 and you are a great part of that story. Our request is important: help us make history.
