https://youtu.be/Sjw5yCZm30wI make a fireplace and put it in a cheap Kmart tent to trial ‘hot tent’ camping in Australia’s Snowy Mountains. This was an experiment to see if it’s worth doing with a more expensive fire resistant tent. I definitely do not recommend using a cheap polyester tent like this because there is a much greater fire risk.I monitored the fire closely at all time and kept the flames low to minimise the risk.

🎬 I’m halfway through the rough cut!🎉

📽️ I’m hoping to have the film finished around the end of the year before touring the country with it.

⛵️ It’s about my 50 day journey up the Great Barrier Reef in a dugout canoe that I built in my backyard.

🇳🇿 I was invited by icebreaker to visit Nokomai Station, one of the regenerative sheep stations they source premium merino wool from.

An hour south of Queenstown, New Zealand, it is absolutely stunning and after meeting James and Liv, who have run this place for generations, I got an understanding of the gentle land management approach they employ which is good for the sheep and good for the land.

⛰️ Basically they run a lot less sheep on their property than a conventional farm (approximate 60% less) which allows them to minimise chemicals and fertiliser.

Light grazing is beneficial for the pasture and helps to reduce unwanted plant species. They also reduce emissions by mustering on foot and horseback.

🐏 As for the sheep, I know which kind of farm I’d rather to live on. Eating from uncrowded, healthy pastures with less chemicals helps them to grow higher quality wool that is less prone to breakage.

icebreaker supports stations like this by giving them long term contracts which reward better long term land management practices and high animal welfare standards.

👕 On the technical side Jordi, icebreaker Global Director of Materials & Innovation, explained the lengths they go to design high performing apparel.

🌏 They are very close to achieving their target of 100% plastic-free fibres, another big win. Their garments are very well thought out too with cool features like mittens that fold out of the cuff of their ReelFleece™ hoodie.

⛰️Surviving the night on a rugged NZ merino sheep station, clothed in the same natural fibres as the merino sheep that live there - that was the Man vs Merino challenge!

🐏 My clothes were more stylish though (although the sheep may not agree), because I was covered head to toe in the new Autumn/Winter range from .

🌡️I kept my body temp in the safe range by adding or subtracting various merino wool layers. There were a lot of adjustments too because my activities ranged from hot, sweaty shelter-building to horizontal near-shivering in a cramped stone shelter.

🧶Merino is my preferred material for this kind of ‘outing’ because it’s soft and comfortable next to skin and great at managing moisture. It’s naturally odour resistant, even after several wears, and let’s skin breathe on active adventures. It’s super comfortable, highly insulative and even holds warmth when wet.

🇳🇿It was an amazing challenge to take part in and the epic New Zealand scenery, atmospherics and celestial brilliance was absolutely spectacular!

Thank you so much for the awesome clothes and opportunity, and for having me on your magnificent 40,000 hectare station.

🏔️There was no mobile coverage for the first 5 days of hike so I sent daily check-in’s with my Zoleo Satellite Messenger. I showed the kids how to use it too incase I keeled over with no warning (unlikely but it’s a good backup if you’re the only adult). I also used it to check my Mum got home OK after she dropped us off because it’s a 3 hour drive with a lot of dirt roads.

🌞This 20w solar panel (Beam Communications) was enough to top up our three 20,000mAh power banks (we carried one each). These charged my camera gear (SLR, GoPro handycam and iPhone) and our head torches plus the kids phones that they took as cameras.

The notion that humans have no function in ‘wilderness’ is entrenched in the US as well as Australia. The difference in Australia is that we still have Aboriginal people with the skills to manage land the old way.

Our national parks (other than the six federally managed national parks) are still not managing their lands in accordance with Aboriginal management techniques.

This is despite our native plants and animals evolving over tens of thousands of years to fit into an Aboriginally managed landscape not a western managed landscape with its choking undergrowth, minimal native grass and widespread severe bushfires.

This was an excerpt from my latest podcast with Callie Russell (link in bio). She’s spent most of last 12 years living off the land with her goat herd in various parts of the Rocky Mountains. She was also on Alone Season 7 and Alone Frozen. https://outbackmike.com/podcast/

https://youtu.be/JE1CELOriDk?si=WYE3hzZi9h5uRBMg
and podcast;
https://outbackmike.com/podcast/

🛟 24 year old Tom built a plywood boat in his Brisbane backyard, shipped it to Peru and rowed solo back toward Australia across the Pacific. A totally authentic, epic adventure ensued until…. on the final leg he was capsized by a rogue wave. In gale force winds, naked and freezing, he secured himself with a single rope to the upturned hull and activated his EPIRB. As night fell the enormity of his situation hit…..

🛳️ The epic survival story and rescue that followed have featured widely in international media over previous weeks. Hear the full story now, for the first time on YouTube (includes pics and video from his journey and rescue) and the podcast! It’s epic!
