💰Insurance is killing the outdoor industry.🏝️On the plus side, instead of instructing others I’m heading off on my own solo survival adventure to make the most of being in this awesome country.😊 Follow to see it.
DIY Fireplace in a Kmart tent.
https://youtu.be/Sjw5yCZm30wI make a fireplace and put it in a cheap Kmart tent to trial ‘hot tent’ camping in Australia’s Snowy Mountains. This was an experiment to see if it’s worth doing with a more expensive fire resistant tent. I definitely do not recommend using a cheap polyester tent like this because there is a much greater fire risk.I monitored the fire closely at all time and kept the flames low to minimise the risk.
HOVERAir X1. 1080 (HD) up to 2.7K resolution -USB chargeable (awesome for multi-day hikes) -125g with battery(!!!): No controller required -30sec from pocket to takeoff! -this drone stays close (within ~10m and doesn’t go about 6m). These are often the best shots though.🚁 Check the @casa website before you start flying. The biggest takeaway here is that even though it’s tiny and unlikely to hurt anyone you still have to stay 30m away from other people.👜 Free carry case from @jbhifi until 24 July.

https://outbackmike.com/podcast/ How to Survive a Crocodile Attack 🐊🎙️ Check my podcast ep about croc safety with Andy from @andysfishing . One inflatable croc was harmed (emotionally) during filming.🎬 My experience comes from extensive fishing, camping and boating in croc country, and interviewing actual croc attack survivors for my upcoming film about my dugout canoe expedition up the Great Barrier Reef.⚠️ Do I really need a disclaimer saying that it’s dangerous for bystanders to help out? Probably. It’s personal choice but there are many cases where it saves lives. Particularly if the attack happens out of the water. Helpers can obviously get hurt though.
Twice the 💰 to ⛷️ (inflation adjusted)🇦🇺⛰️ @perisher_resort is my fav resort btw. Been coming since I was a kid and I used to work here. Times are changing though. I don’t see my kids being able to afford coming here with their kids if they have them.💵 It cost $634 for two kids and myself for the day (lift pass only). That’s $249 x 2 (because 15 is considered an adult) + $136 (child of 14).@newscomauhq released a story titled ‘Grim scenes at Aldi as snow gear overflows Special Buys shelves’. It basically says that people are struggling to afford skiing (those that shop at Aldi anyway) so they’re not buying Aldi ski clothing.I know it might sound like I’m blaming the rich. That’s not my intention. Everyone is trying to make money and get ahead in life. It’s more a function of the widening gap between rich and poor. Policies that favour this gap make life worse for the majority.
⛺️Do we even need a booking system?I’m not having a go at National Parks. Is not their fault that people book and don’t show up. I’m just pointing out that a system, introduced for Covid distancing, isn’t working well and is no longer needed. My vote is to ditch it.NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service #freecamping #kosciuszkonationalpark
So far so good🔥We’re not covered in plastic burns yet.More to follow.

🎬 I’m halfway through the rough cut!🎉
📽️ I’m hoping to have the film finished around the end of the year before touring the country with it.
⛵️ It’s about my 50 day journey up the Great Barrier Reef in a dugout canoe that I built in my backyard.

Latitude from the Sun☀️Winter Solstice📆 Try this at home over the week (until end of June). It’ll still be close.🦘This was in the southern hemisphere. 🌏 For the northern hemisphere: measure the total angle and add 23.5°.#survivalskills #outdoortips #latitude
🥾Best Dual Purpose Survival/Hiking item.🎒Emergency bivvy bags are awesome. They’re cheap ($10-$40), light (100g) and small (fist size).🛟They can save your life and perform reusable hiking functions, if treated carefully (sticks and rocks will easily rip them).#hikingessentials #bivvy #emergencymedicine

🆘Can you signal for help with a dead phone?🚁 It looks easy but it takes practice (try it🤣). In a survival situation I’d practice regularly so I’m ready if I see a potential rescuer.📲 It makes no difference whether the phone is on with a bright screen or dead. I only mention a dead phone because it shows how useful it can be even if it’s dead.🪞Having practiced with both I’d still pack a dedicated signal mirror due to increased accuracy and brightness (2-3 times more than a phone). The international signal for 🆘 is •••_ _ _ ••• (3 short flashes then 3 long flashes then 3 short flashes)This would be very hard to acheive with a phone. I would just do my best to keep shining the reflection at my rescuers. If I was a real guru then doing flashes in lots of 3 would be all I could achieve.🙏Thanks to my mate Harlan for filming 1km away.#SOS#rescue#signalmirror

🦘Jerky ingredients: 400g sizzle steaks, soy sauce, sugar, salt & pepper.🌡️60°C or 140°F for 8 hrs (6 for fan-forced oven).🔥400g pictured reduced in weight to 166g when dried.🥾Great as is for a lightweight hiking snack or rehydrate with rice or pasta on a campfire or gas stove.🛒I bought the meat at Woolies (Coles normally sells it too). I’ve never found it in Aldi unfortunately.!!! It’s best not to use galvanised mesh like I did because at high temps it can release harmful chemicals.
