Swarayoginee Dr. Prabha Atre: "I did learn the khayal gayaki under Sureshbabu but it was while accompanying Hirabai on the tanpura that I learned the etiquette of stage presentation. It was under her tutelage that I learned that one has to have a sixth sense to asses the ragas or repertoire that would work for the kind of audience that has turned up for the performance."

We join in the growing sadness around the loss of musical giants, the most recent of whom was Swarayoginee Dr. Prabha Atre.

From our co-founder Aarshin Karande:

"Dr. Prabha Atre is probably the only performing singer to have successfully equally balanced the scholastic, aesthetic, entertainment, and emotional dimensions of khayal music.

I had the joy of listening to her at — then a festival dedicated to Hirabai Barodekar and Sureshbabu Mane — in 2004 at Mumbai. I listened to her recorded work only after hearing her live. I immensely enjoyed the studiousness and restraint in her approach to vistaar and bhava.

She departs with an immense legacy of gifted students, lively compositions, and academic work that will continue to enrich Hindustani Classical music for decades to come.

Ustad Rashid Khan: "Though essentially I am a classical vocalist but I grew up with Rafi Saheb’s immortal numbers, Sufi music and thumris too. I enjoy the whistles and farmaaish like ‘Yaad piya ki aaye’ or ‘Aaoge jab tum’, but avoid singing these before serious classical fans. Frankly, this ‘Jab We Met’ song has given me immense popularity as a singer. Hoards of people come for this song only; but in the process they listen to khayal and gradually develop a taste for raga music."
