💌 SAVE this as your future winter season inspiration

New here?! We are Hannah + Schoofa, we have just spent the last year living in the Arctic of Canada and we are now halfway through our Vanlife honeymoon driving from the Arctic to Panama

Follow as we share our cultural learnings, outdoorsy adventure travels and unfiltered stories from life on the road 🚐

With our winter season drawing to a close, we thought it was time to do a round up of our favourite winter pictures that we have collected throughout the last two winter seasons ❄️

I am someone who has always hated all things to do with winter, whether it’s the snow, the cold, the dreary weather, I always said I would never be a winter weather gal

✨BUT✨

These past two winter seasons has completely changed my opinion of the cold weather season. I have found so many loves and passions throughout the past two years that have all played a role in turning me into a firm cold weather lover 💙

My biggest lesson from these past two years that I mostly learnt of the Indigenous Peoples of the community that I lived in, is: there is no such thing as bad weather, just a bad choice of clothing; and that is the lesson I will take away from these past two winters 🫶🏻

Which photo is your favourite?! And which experience would you most like to have?!

🧡ANTELOPE CANYON TIPS🧡

💌 Save this for when you tick this off the bucketlist

We recently did a road trip through the South West USA and we got to do and experience one of our absolute bucket list spots - Antelope Canyon, so here is

☕️ ALL THE TEA ☕️

- You can day trip from Las Vegas, it is around 4.5 hours so it’s definitely not a quick stop but it is do-able

- you need to decide which part of Antelope Canyon you want to explore, Upper or Lower. Upper is above ground and therefore more accessible, Lower is below ground and requires some steps but it is not difficult

- YOU HAVE TO BOOK A TOUR! You cannot visit any of antelope canyon without a Navajo approved tour guide which you can find online. We loved the fact it was Indigenous owned and that they controlled the land (in peak season, it fills up quickly so book in advance)

✨BUT✨

- For transparency, we were a little disappointed with the tour itself for the money it cost (around $70 pp), it was very much just an es**rt rather than a tour guide, they helped take a couple of pictures but as it is Indigenous owned we were hoping they would share more Indigenous knowledge of the land and people of the area

- If you can book in person, pay in cash and you get it cheaper which was definitely something we were all about, but you obviously can’t book in advance

- Wear warm clothes in winter as it is considerably colder in at the bottom of the canyon than when you walk above surface

TOP TIP: for the best pictures, hang at the back of the group so you can get your pictures with no one else in them 📸

🎉 We survived Jackson Hole 🎉

For those that haven’t seen ski resort, it really is something to behold! With this only being Han’s second season snowboarding, when we saw Jackson Hole in Autumn, we couldn’t get over the steepness of the mountain and couldn’t even begin to imagine snowboarding down it!

But after visiting, Jackson Hole ski resort really does hit differently; from the diversity of the slopes to the challenging runs, it had something for everyone! Even more, it was the perfect mountain to improve those boarding skills as it really was a sink or swim mountain 😅

Tips for Jackson Hole:

- Start on the right hand side of the mountain when looking at it from the bottom and work your way across the mountain to the left

- Unless you are very experienced, choose blue runs for your first as they are more like black diamonds 😅

- Try to ski mid week to avoid the queues

- If it is cloudy at the bottom of the mountain, chances are there is an inversion and the top of the mountain will be beautiful blue skies (this happened soooo many times!)

- Make sure to take the tram up to the top of the mountain and enjoy a Nutella waffle at the Corbets Cabin Top of the World Waffles 🧇

January Dump 💩

This past month has been jam packed, to be honest it feels like three months thrown in to one, but in all the right ways!

Our 10 pics of January:

1. Saw countless stunning inversions whilst boarding and put our snowboarding to the test with some killer runs ☁️

2. Had some up close elk encounters and also spotted an elusive wolf 🐺

3. Hiked to a frozen waterfall in 💦

4. Spotted some bison whilst driving from Montana to 🦬

5. Snowboarded 10 days 🏂

6. Saw a beautiful sun dog after driving through a blizzard for 3 days 🌞

7. Managed to snowboard for 24 days of the month (10 at Mon Tremblant, 7 at Big Sky and 7 at Jackson Hole) 😴

8. Survived sleeping in a van in -35C with a ‘feels like’ temp of -46C with no heating as it broke 🥶

9. Brought in the new year at Mont Tremblant snow mountain 🥳

10. Had so many pretty blue bird snow days ❄️

Some bonus ones:

- Drove 4200km across country and road tripped through 8 US states and 3 Canadian provinces 🛣️

- - had some Vanbi wins: got the internal batteries fixed, got the heater back up and running, got the serpentine belt replaced and none of them needed a tow truck 🎉

And some of our hardest days of life on the road so far (because we are all about transparency):

- had some really hard van days where temperatures didn’t get above -30C, we were cold, our snow gear was wet and our heater was dead, but we got through it and it ultimately made us stronger 💪🏻

- had some Vanbi issues (4 consecutive days to be precise😅) Day 1: woke up with a flat battery; Day 2: our heating stopped working in -40C; Day 3: got a flat tire; Day 4: the serpentine belt broke 🚐

HOW WE ENDED UP LIVING IN THE ARCTIC! 🐻‍❄️

Story time 👇🏻

In August 2022, we moved to Canada on the working holiday visa and we had joked how fun it would be to say we had lived in the Arctic!

Anyway, fast forward a few weeks and we learnt that there was one road in the whole of Canada that you could drive to the Arctic Ocean! In our excitement, we jumped at that chance! With our run down van in tow, we embarked on a 700km dirt road, to get to the Arctic Ocean, and let’s just say the road was ROUGH! 🪨

We got to the Arctic Ocean and did the obligatory dip of the toes, we were about to head back down the dirt road when we learnt the road back down was closed. They predicted it would be 3-4 weeks before the road would open again so we were now stuck in the Arctic!

We had a brainstorm and decided it was clearly meant to be and that we had to seize this opportunity. So we applied for jobs at a husky dog sledding kennel and after 2 days, become the kennel managers having never dog sledded before in our lives. It was the most amazing 6 weeks and after our time there was up, the bridge had opened and we were meant to travel south again, but we really didn’t want to leave.

So, with both of us being teachers, we applied to teach at the local school. We ended up staying for the entire school year, experiencing Inuit and Gwich’in Indigenous culture daily, learning from the land and embracing everything the Arctic had to offer.

We honestly can’t thank our lucky stars enough that the road closed whilst we were there. We are firm believers that even on our unlucky days, you can always find the luck to carry you through. And this was definitely one of those moments. After all, the moments are really only as bad as you allow them to be 🫶🏻

Do you have an epic travel fail which turned into your greatest travel win? Let us know! ⬇️

HAVE YOU EVER HAD LUNCH IN AN IGLOO?!

There are some things we never thought would happen and having lunch in an igloo atop of the frozen Arctic Ocean was definitely one of them.

Last year whilst we lived in the Arctic, around 150km from the Arctic Ocean, we went on a spontaneous trip to the Arctic Ocean to see it fully frozen over so we could say that we have dipped our toes in the ocean and also stood on top of it! However, when we got there, there happened to be three igloos built on top. So to escape the arctic wind, we took refuge in the igloos and enjoyed having a truly ‘arctic’ experience.

Also, can we just say how insanely impressed we were with how wind-proof the igloos actually were, obviously that was what they were built for but we couldn’t believe how warm they were inside, so amazing! To the degree, we even contemplated spending a night in one, but decided -25C in a van was probs enough for us!🧊

Would you want to have lunch in an igloo on top of the Arctic Ocean? 🥪

So here’s our 2023 top 10 throwbacks:

1. Getting married in Banff National Park

2. Bringing in 2023 at a homemade ice bar on a frozen lake in the Arctic surrounded by our closest friends

4. Starting off our honeymoon by driving cross continent from Washington to Maine and getting to visit one of our dream national parks, Yellowstone

5. Going in an igloo on top of the frozen Arctic Ocean, something we never thought we’d be able to say!

6. Running our first half marathon under the midnight sun in the Arctic (this picture is actually taken at midnight 😂)

7. Dog sledding with our own team of huskies, and having our little puppy that we raised be a part of our husky team 🥰

8. Seeing countless northern lights shows that continue to blow us away

9. Skidooing on a frozen river in a remote community called, Aklavik in the Arctic
