AHEBI (Ayibi) UGBABE ANEKWU, THE FEMALE KING OF ENUGU EZIKE WHO TRIUMPHED DESPITE ALL BLACKMAILS AND HATRED
Around the early 20th century, Ahebi was crowned by Attah Igala as the King of Enugu Ezike in the present day Enugu State. Ahebi was the daughter of Anekwu Ameh from one of the ruling houses in Idah. They migrated from Idah to the place, and they are called Oma Ida (UnuIda) by others around. Other Igala towns according to their History are Umuagaidoko, Umuitodo and Umuopu. Other sections of Enugu Ezike said that they are from Benin Kingdom. Umuitodo are descendants of Itodo Aduga. Ahebi was not the only woman to be crowned by Attah as a traditional ruler. Ochonia Apeh was Onu Itobe around the same time. Even the Attah Igala after Abutu Ejeh known as Amuchi (Ebulejonu) was a female. There are others in Delta State and even in Ossamala, all of Igala root, and with the same Igala culture. But that of Ahebi was greeted by serious opposition. There were other people from other Igala Royal clans, especially males then who contested for the position but couldn't get it. Only one person can be a king at a particular time. But she was qualified and recommended by the Kingmakers, Attah Igala had to bead her. In fact, her village in Umuida is called Umuonu, which means Children of Kings, probably her or their family head was once a ruler of the community. Then supporters of some opponents resorted to name calling and Blackmail to the extent of claiming that she was a pr******te. Some even said Attah helped her through British not remembering that Attah and British were not in good terms around that time to extent of removing one Attah from the throne and even making one to commit death in 1956. They also forgot that traditional rulers around the Nsukka or that part of Enugu State and many other parts were crowned by Attah Igala then. The case of Ahebi, daughter of Anekwu Ameh was not different. Despite all the oppositions and pressures by some people telling Attah to remove her and install their person, Attah only told them to wait for their time. This, they took it that Attah was siding her (or even having an affair with her not knowing that a woman traditional ruler is now a man and will not go near any man again. They also forgot that Attah's throne is sacred and holy, and that Attah then had numerous wives, and new one is added yearly after Ocho festival) by not removing her as some groups wanted. But despite all the insults and Blackmails, she ruled gallantly and courageously until she joined the ancestors around 1948. Like Ochonia Apeh, the Onu Itobe, Ahebi Ugbabe was one of the powerful and courageous Igala traditional rulers.
