DR. AMBEDKAR: ONE OF THE GREATEST WORLD LEADERS:

December 6th marks the 66th death anniversary of Dr. Bhumirao Ramji Ambedkar, one of the most outstanding world leaders in the 20th century as a civil rights activist.

He fought to uproot casteism from the contaminated soil of India's social and religious culture.

When India gained independence, Ambedkar became the principal author of the nation's constitution and held the law portfolio in the cabinet.

With that authoritative opportunity, untouchability was declared unlawful.

After centuries of hitherto unchallenged and illegal social order relating to human rights violations, Manusmriti, in terms of the laws of India, became illegal overnight.

Ambedkar, in fact, was an inspiration for the progressive Hindu mind, a guide for the rationalist and reformist Hindu, an advocate of women's rights, and almost a messiah for the lowest of the low, which for the first time felt some hope of freedom from their dehumanized status.

FOR "ACHCHE DIN" (Good Days), THOUSANDS OF INDIANS MIGRATING ABROAD:

According to India's Ministry of External Affairs, the number of Indians who renounced their Indian citizenship was 1,34,561 (in 2018); 1,44,017 (in 2019); 85,256 (in 2020); 1,63,370 (in 2021); 2,25,620 (in 2022) and 87,026 (till June 2023).

Moreover, as per the ministry's report, 29 million NRIs and PIOs (including OCIs) reside outside India, and overseas Indians comprise the world's largest overseas diaspora. Every year, 2.5 million Indians migrate overseas, the highest annual number of migrants in the world.

It won't be surprising that among these people who are moving or seeking alternative residency abroad are the Modi Bhagats, who know the realities of living in India under his regime.

Education, employment, healthcare, law and order are some of the main issues for those giving up their Indian passports. In addition, the deteriorating social climate, religious and ethnic intolerance, insecurity and violence against minority communities are the other reasons to seek better lives abroad, especially in the West.

Recently, I saw hundreds of students from India at the Vancouver International Airport. A separate counter was set up for them to do the paperwork. That was the scene for one day.

Is there a lack of educational facilities in India that students seek admission to foreign lands? Or is that the pathway for permanent residency abroad?

Indeed, all these migrating people, including the escalating 'student' number, don't trust Modi's "Achche Din" (good days) promise to seek the AD abroad anymore.

THE GENIUS OF O.P. NAYYAR CONTINUES TO ENTERTAIN US WITH HIS LIVELY COMPOSITIONS: By Promod Puri

In the Golden Era of Bollywood music, stretching from the ‘50s to the ’60, the Hindi film industry produced the most memorable songs that are now an integral part of the north Indian cultural scene.

Stalwarts like Naushad Ali Khan, S.D. Burman, C. Ramchandra, Shanker Jaikishan, Roshan, Khayyam, and many more contributed significantly to the entertaining segment of Hindi films.

However, music director O. P. Nayyar occupies a unique position among these great composers for his distinctive and refreshing blend of Western and Indian musical elements.

Unlike his three brothers, who were all in the medical profession, Nayyar, despite objections from his parents, adamantly drifted towards a music career.

In this advent, he was instantly successful as a music director, starting with Aasman in 1952. He scored the music of 72 films over 50 years in his blockbuster achievement.

His compositions often featured the harmonium, bongos, and brass instruments, setting them apart from the prevalent musical trends of the time.

A noteworthy approach in Nayyar’s compositions was that he believed the film songs must be lively and entertaining. That was why he earned tremendous popularity song after song the moment these got released.

Melody and rhythm were his trademarks in generating lively and entertaining creations. His created compositions still enjoy popularity in musical functions, especially marriage parties. For example, these are the evergreens that never get worn out from the vinyl:

Leke Pahla Pahla Pyar, Udan Jab Jab Zulfen Teri, Sar Par Topi, Mera Naam Chin Chin Choo, Ankhon Hi Ankhon Mein, Kabhi Aar Kabhi Paar Laga, Kahin Pe Nighan Kahin Pe Nishana, Yeh Desh Hai Veer Jawano Ka, Tumsa Nahin Dekha, Aye Dil Hai Mushkil’, ‘Yoon To Humne Lakh Haseen Dekhe, and many, many more.

An outstanding feature of O.P. Nayyar’s contribution to film music was when he realized that the beats of a running horse carrier create their rhythms. He could feel there was music a horse created, and he captured it in several of his compositions. All of them were super hits.
Here are the few gems of O.P. Nayyar that can give you an enjoyable ride in the Tonga beats:

‘Zara Haule Haule Chalo Mere Saajna’ from Sawan Ki Ghata
Mang Ke Saath Tumhara’ from Naya Daur
Piya, piya piya, mera jiya pukare (Baap re Baap).

From the genus of O.P. Nayyar, these two numbers have been my all-time favourites that reflect the superb combination of Western and Hindustani instrumental music and the soft and melodic touch to the poetic expressions in the lyrics:

“Jaiye Aap Kahan Jayenge,” film Mere Sanam, lyrics Mujrooh Sultanpuri, singer Asha Bhonsle.

“Pyar par bas to nahi,” film Sone Ki Chidiya, lyrics: Kaifi Azmi, singer Talat Mahmood and Asha Bhonsle.

Omkar Prasad Nayyar was born in Lahore on January 16, 1926, and died in Mumbai on January 28, 2007. A postal stamp in his honour was released by the government of India in 2013.

Rosa Parks refused on Dec. 1, 1955, to give up her bus seat to a white man. Cops arrested the African-American seamstress for violating Montgomery, Alabama's racial segregation laws that required black patrons to sit in the back of a bus and give up their seats to whites. The incident led to a bus boycott spearheaded by a young minister, Martin Luther King, Jr.

REALIZING THE AUTHENTIC IMAGE OF SELF
(Authentic: 2023 The Word Of The Year)

Every year, Merriam-Webster selects the word of the year. This year, its chosen word is 'authentic." it's the most searched word according to the dictionary officials.

The word authentic is often used as an adjective, like authentic cuisine, art, or artifice. Among other meanings, it relates to true to one's personality, spirit or character.

In fact, there is a crisis of authenticity in our world. And that is mainly at the individual level.

The question is: who in the world are we individually?

The question does not relate to our standing or relevance in society.

Nor does it search for an identity among the people around us. Or in the company of living and non-living environments, the universe, and the celestial world.

It is just establishing and developing the authenticity of the Self.

It is an earnest attempt to find life under the true Self and personal values rather than assigned by external demands of society.

The study and the action involve discarding the false Self that reflects our behaviour as others perceive it.

In this exploration, we may see that the self-image created was false or fake to please others or accepted by society's norms.

The authenticity concept arises from the insight that humans generally live or exist inauthentic ways.

Social relationships, cultural values, and norms construct an inauthentic Self.

The recovery of the authentic Self requires a radical reexamination of cultural contexts, habitual lifestyles, and ways of thinking.

It also involves a positive progression of authenticity across time.

Authenticity is a feeling that develops with its persuasive use; being true to the Self and seeking what is morally good help create sincere and natural authenticity of the Self.

Recognizing its valuation and the volume of its search in the dictionary or other means, Merriam-Webster's 2023 honouring the word authentic as the word of the 2023 year is the right choice.

On the auspicious occasion of Sri Guru Nanak Devji's birthday, I reproduce this article written some time ago. It is about 4 minutes reading time.

Hukam Razai Chalna, Nanak Likhyea Naal.
Hukmae Andhar Sabh, Bahar Hukme Na Koe

These are the two separate edicts from Guru Nanak Dev. But discussing them together initiates an integrated understanding of the messages while building the desired impact of their practicality in our lives.

Hukam Razai Chalna, Nanak likhyea naal, in its simple meaning, implies that it is inevitably written, according to Nanak, that we conduct ourselves according to God’s will.

Hukam means order or command, razai stands for acceptance, chalna means to walk, and likhyea naal means written down.

To follow (razai), the walk (chalna) guided by the hukam of God as inevitably written (likhyea naal) creates our fundamental realization of the divine message from Guru Nanak Dev.

The keyword in the proclamation is Hukam, which is where our razai or acceptance is based.

Does it mean that we dispel all our reasons and accept every situation or event as the will of God? In other words, is that our fate, good or bad? Is this how God wants us to accept His will without dissent or action?

If our answer is yes, then we are stereotypically and ritualistically wrong. And we miscarriage the Hukam.

Hukam does not mean fate or something unavoidable. It does not mean we accept every situation as a creation of God, whether we like it or not, and surrender to it.

Passive acceptance is the path for those who seek escape or renunciation. Nanak was against surrender, and so were all other Sikh Gurus, including Guru Gobind Singh.

The history of Sikhism is full of actions to seek righteousness and reject injustice. And that has been the Supreme Command which Nanak is professing.

Hukum razai chalna is the enlightened message that the rest of the Sikh Gurus followed. Rather than acceding, they fought against oppression and tyranny and sought equality for humanity.

It is in this crusade and commitment that Hukam gets its legitimate and revered meaning.

The reality is that when we face an unjust or grave situation that conflicts with our conscious mind, it is not God’s will. Instead, it is created and imposed on us by diverse temporal factors. Our earnest response to tackle or fight back against the intolerable circumstance is our pragmatic and intelligent understanding of the Hukam.

In our personal lives, when we face problems that could be health issues, harm and ill-will inflicted on us, hatred based on race or caste reasons, etc., then the divine Hukam demands to tackle the obstacle or crisis we encounter.

Hukam-razai does not mean we accept the situation and do nothing or expect “god-willing” it would go away.

Life is an entanglement of suffering. Through Hukam-inspired ethical actions, blissful emancipation is achievable.

A reader of mine has very prudently and concisely written:
“Hukam is, in fact, a dynamic process, not a fixed endpoint, that we can use our free will to exercise using our conscious mind. It also feels different when I hear hukam-nama now. It is not a command or a mandate from a patriarchal God but our relatedness to the Divine.”

We often deal with a situation we created. And when this situation is ill-conceived or morally and ethically wrong, it goes against the will of God.

Hukmae Andhar Sabh, Bahar Hukme Na Koe:

In Japji, Guru Nanak says: “Hukmae andhar sabh, bahar hukme na koe.” A simple translation of the mandate is that everybody (sabh) is under(andhar) His command (hukam), and nobody (na koe) is beyond (bahar) His command.

The question is, what is that divine command or Hukam, signed and delivered by Nanak, from which we do not deviate or stray.

Indeed, it is a path that refers to the divine order. The moment we disregard this order, it violates God’s Hukam.

Divine order is the system established by His Hukam, where we do not create chaos and misery for ourselves or fellow humans, animals, plants, and our living environment.

It is an order of ethical and moral conduct in our lives where our conscious mind generates virtuous thinking to execute virtuous actions. This way, we are neither damaging our conscious mind nor hurting others. And we are staying "hukmae andhar" or within His order.

The divine order is a disciplined and conscientious undertaking to get into the spirit of the Hukum.

In this order resides our religiosity of being honest, humble, sincere, considerate and helpful to others, merciful, forgetting and forgiving, loving fellow beings and caring for the environment, including animals, plants, and nature.

And everything else which is pious, pure, and morally firm aligns us with Guru Nanak’s universal dictum: Hukum Razai Chalna, Nanak Likhyea Naal.

Guru Nanak's birthday, also called parkash diwas, falls on Monday, November 27, 2023.

A Few Random Thoughts about Guru Nanak Dev-Ji:

1. The statement that Nanak is the author of "original Bani" is genuine. It carries his critical interpretation of centuries-old scriptures, customs, and rituals.

2. Nanak's readings, like that of Kabir, were based on his perception of the society he faced and experienced rather than seeking guidance from theological volumes.

3. Regarding the politeness or humbleness that Nanak professed, I observed that he seldom used the pronoun "you." Instead, all his advisories and messages are addressed to himself, as Bulle Shah and Kabir did in their verses.

4. His compassion for the poor and his desire for equality in society are reflected in the introduction of the concepts of Langar and Seva, which are now an integral part of Sikh traditions and identity.

WHAT IS KARMA:

Karma is one of the fundamentals of Hindu thinking.

Karma represents action, deed or work. It is an act of doing something that involves two more factors: the doer and the result(s) of work performed.

Together, action, doer and result constitute Karma.
It starts with a verb and ends with a noun.

For that reason, Karma is not merely an action but implies its rebounding influence.

A cause gets created as a first event, followed by another event, the effect. The sequence is called causation.

Cause and effect, or action and reaction, are generated by our thoughts and performing acts or those instructed by others.

In short, Karma is everything one thinks about and does to create a cause and effect.

Karma is not a profound philosophy. It is a working assignment for the thinker of thought or doer of a deed and accepting the outcome of that executed assignment.

REMEMBERING THE HISTORIC '2020-'21 FARMERS' PEACEFUL PROTEST:

Ordinary citizens also stood with the farmers and showed that there was still much decent, good and beautiful in India.

There was also an extensive lineup of well-known personalities from all across the country who dared to step on the stage, offering their moral backing to the protest.

Not only that, but the world community, especially the Indian diaspora, supported the farmers' struggle physically, monetarily, and morally.

In the end, Farmers won, draconian farm laws were withdrawn, and the world has learned the weapon of peaceful protest delivers results.

The year-long rally was in the spirit of Gandhi's universal message of Satyagraha; Satya means truth, and Graha stands for movement. The policy is based on non-violent resistance and firm adherence to truth.

What Does Goddess Kali With Her Unusual And Scary Look Worshipped?

(It is the revised version of my article on the Hindu goddess Kali. A fierce-looking but with traits of motherly love, Kali is revered as a protector and destroyer of evil. The article tries to evoke her combating personality to fight and kill the devils threatening society. We need Ma (mother) Kali as there are many devils engaged in wars and killings, destabilizing and destroying the peace and harmony all across the world today.)

-By Promod Puri
In my understanding of Hinduism, there is more in its nature of study and deliberations than just religion.

In this context, the chapter of Goddess Kali divulges an aspect of Hindu thought and philosophy apart from rationality, spirituality, morality, and myths.

Goddess Kali is an exciting and intriguing reading. In addition to her ritualistic adoration and worshipping, the study reveals her unique temperament that adds to the diverse outlook of Hinduism.

(Painting by Raja Ravi Varma)

Kali's appearance is dark blue with sunken eyes. Kali typically portrays herself with a scary and angry stare in her lengthy, blood-red tongue sticking out in a ferocious image.

Her scantly covered body has a long garland of severed skulls of demons whom she destroyed after listening to the requests of her followers. And her short skirt is the ripped-out arms of the defeated enemies.

Kali often appears in the blood-thirsty and feral image. There is blood dripping from the chopped heads of demons that she holds in her arms. Her mood is terrifying and unruly. Indeed, seeing other Hindu goddesses wrapped in colourful sarees and wearing beautiful jewelry, Kali is not a pleasant sight. Moreover, she is not the kind of deity often displayed in most Hindu in-home shrines or her picture on hanging calendars.

Kali's overall personality is revealed in an astounding story when she defeats a powerful demon named Raktabija. Other female deities fought against him. They were able to wound him. But the story goes like this: every drop from each wound inflicted on him would become a clone of the demon Raktabija. Thus, fighting against him by the deities meant increasing the army of his duplicates.

The deities finally gave up. They requested Kali to finish the demon because only she had the divine Shakti, meaning power, to kill him.
With a gaping mouth, her tongue lolling out, and deep reddish eyes filling the regions of the sky with her roars, Kali singlehandedly fought the battle with the demon and the army of his replicas. Kali eventually defeated him by sucking his blood before it could reach the ground. Raktabija, along with his army of duplicates, were all finished. Her winning trophies were the several heads of the devil around her neck.

In euphoria, she went into a wild dance. The more she danced, the wilder and turbulent it became. She was rampaging out of control. Her dancing swirls became so powerful that there was a fear Kali could destroy the world.

In that situation, Lord Shiva was sent to calm Kali down. He was successful but got stomped under her left foot. The forceful, wild dance came to a halt. And the world was saved by Lord Shiva, who is himself attributed as the lord of destruction.

Kali is often portrayed standing or dancing on Lord Shiva, who lies calm and prostrate beneath her foot. Acclaimed mythological artist Raja Ravi Varma captures the dance scene in one of his most famous paintings. Here, Lord Shiva, one of the Trinity Hindu gods, the others Brahma and Vishnu, is seen under her foot.

Kali's unusual portrayal in her body wears wild and vicious looks and a vigorous victory dance. At the same time, Lord Shiva, a God himself, under her foot, is the material for an interpretive view of her to establish what she represents.

QUINTESSENTIAL EMBODIMENT OF SHAKTI
Kali is a Hindu goddess of death, time, and destruction. She is the quintessential embodiment of Shakti, representing the divine feminine power. Kali is like a mad storm, typhoon, or wildfire who does not spare anybody in her furious crusade.

She is a force of nature where her actions or motives are mystified as they defy reasons and explanations. Like nature, she has a destructive trait representing its rough and uncontrolled behaviour, besides delivering generous goodwill. All that results in her being powerful.

Kali is independent and not worried about the results of her actions. Her moves are disciplined. She is a demon slayer, and her psyche represents justifiable female resentment and rage.
Although she is paired with Parvati, Lord Shiva's wife, she represents a dark, wild, and angry personality here as Kali. Her other image as being Parvati or goddess Gauri is that of calm and tranquil temperament.

A WOMANHOOD IN MULTIPLE TRAITS
In this duality, and with her four, eight, or ten arms that carry a mix of belligerent and luminous symbolisms, Kali represents womanhood in multiple portraits. The many roles contemporary woman juggles, the challenges, and the fights or battles she undertakes are what goddess Kali means.

Kali represents a feminist icon in contemporary society who is not bound by societal norms and restrictions. She is a goddess with motherly love without being labelled to the customary appearance of a mother.

She is a symbol of contemporary womanhood, especially in the West. Kali was on the cover page of the first edition of Ms. Magazine. Its artist, Miriam Wosk, drew a colourful illustration featuring a pregnant woman with eight arms, symbolizing the multi-tasking role of women now and for generations. Rolling Stones, the English rock band, had its logo of "tongue and lip design" adopted out of the stuck-out tongue of Kali.

Despite her portrayed terrible look, Kali is considered the kindest and loving goddess. Ma-Kali, mother Kali, is her revered status in the iconology of Hindu gods. She is the mother of the entire universe and a divine protector.

Kali is a free goddess ready to fight evil in any Yuga.

In Uttarakhand state manpower, machinery and technology are involved in saving the lives of 48 workers trapped in a tunnel under construction due to a heavy landslide inside. The accident happened last Sunday. The rescue mission involves the Indian Air Force's heavy transport aircraft to bring in the machinery.
Meanwhile, Some pipes are being used to supply the workers with food, water and medicines. In addition, rescue workers have been able to dig through 24 metres of the 60 m debris to lay a pipe, which would help the trapped men crawl out of the tunnel.

The tunnel is part of the BJP government’s Char Dham ( the four popular Hindu religious places) all-weather accessibility project.

He led two rebellions against the government of Canada and its first post-Confederation prime minister, John A. Macdonald. Riel sought to preserve Métis rights and culture as their homelands in the Northwest. In the Canadian history he has been a folk hero by the Francophones, the Catholic nationalists, and the native rights movement.

A Mandir And Gurdwara in Pakistan's Swami Narayan Temple Complex:

The Shri Swami Narayan Mandir, Karachi, is a Hindu temple that is the only Swami Narayan temple in Pakistan. The temple is notable for its size and frontage on the M. A. Jinnah Road in Karachi. The temple celebrated its anniversary of 216 years in April 2004. The temple is located at the centre of a Hindu neighbourhood in Karachi.

According to the Pakistan Hindu Council, Swaminarayan Jayanti, Ram Navami, Janmashtami, Dussehra, Diwali and almost all of the main religious festivals are celebrated by Hindus in this temple.

In the Swaminarayan Mandir complex, a Gurdwara has been created for the small Sikh community.

The Gurdwara Sahib houses three sets of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji in the Palki Sahib. Pictures of the Gurus and a small shrine devoted to Guru Nanak Dev Ji are there. There is a Hindu bell in the Gurdwara Sahib as well.
