👋 We’re trying to reach teachers – can you help? If you know a primary or high school teacher in regional, rural or remote NSW, we'd love them to know they can bring the Art Gallery's special exhibitions into their classrooms for free.

Our online regional connect program features free live Zoom sessions for high school students where they'll hear directly from Art Gallery staff about key artworks and themes from the Archibald Prize, and our K–6 learning workshop helps young students explore portraits in new and inspiring ways.

Bookings are open right now, and sessions are also available for non-regional schools at a small charge.

Meet artist Lauren Wiltshire an inspirational Novocastrian art teacher whose art school .art.space in Newcastle teaches adults and children (including my 7 year old niece Evie!). I loved the work in the exhibition of the school held which included work by students and teachers. So fresh and vibrant! In addition to the historical art greats, Lauren introduces contemporary Australian artists like podcast guests and to her young students as inspiration and a starting point for their own work. Swipe for some of the pieces that caught my eye ending with Lauren’s own work ‘Snapper Point’, acrylic on fibre, 2023.

Archibald winner Julia Gutman mentioned some exciting future events in our chat at the Art Gallery of NSW Members ‘Artists in Conversation’ series last night at the Art Gallery of New South Wales! in addition to having work in the upcoming show ‘New Dog Old Tricks’ at Ngununggula (you guessed it - it’s all about dogs 🐶), Artspace Sydney’s transformed art destination at The Gunnery in Woolloomooloo is having its grand opening celebrations on 15 and 16 December and Julia is one of only 10 artists to take up a one year studio spot in the revamped space. She also has work coming up in Melbourne Art Fair and a solo with Sullivan + Strumpf next year. The arts are alive and well in Australia!!🎉🎉thanks to all who came along last night - as always a beautiiful audience! And thanks also to the Sir William Dobell Foundation for making this series possible. I’ll be back next year with more conversations at the AGNSW - first one in March!

Had a great chat over coffee yesterday with in Perth! Wonderful portrait painter (swipe for images including her finalist painting in this year’s Kennedy Prize ) She creates sensitive portraits often evoking a tranquil mood particularly through composition and light. But there’s also an alternative interpretation to the reclining figures in particular - one of attempts to alleviate pain from the symptoms of endometriosis which Rachelle has personally experienced. She is represented by but also shares her extensive knowledge of painting through workshops (with the next one day portrait painting workshop coming up on 28 October). She’ll also be carrying out a live painting demonstration at on 14 October. Fabulous artist!

Repost
When I interviewed in 2017 he’d only been painting for about 18 months, but it was clear he was an absolute natural. Since then, his career has gone through the stratosphere and his first museum show just opened a major art destination in Madrid and the show includes 3 of Jordy’s work from their collection. I spoke with Jordy again briefly about a month ago when he and partner artist were in Sydney - see reel dated 22 August. His work is like no other artist I’ve come across - the figures, the colours, the craziness - I absolutely love it!!
From the museum’s website: ‘During the early years of his career Kerwick painted still lifes. Initially characterised by muted tones, they became increasingly colourful with a wider range of details. These interior scenes then started to include a camouflaged cobra and a tiger; fantastical creatures which subsequently moved outdoors, into jungle landscapes inhabited by lions and wolves but also by unicorns, the majority with two heads. Kerwick’s most recent paintings are more complex, narrative compositions that evoke an entire mythology and, in some cases, depict a female divinity.’
Phenomenal artist! 🔥🔥🔥

’s major exhibition is now on!!! ‘Rainbow Serpent (Version)’ includes many stunning paintings but also an incredible mirrored-stage floor with thousands of reflecting circles creating a breathtaking space (first and second installation images) Curated by former IMA director , the exhibition emphasises ideas of temporality, space, and non-linear connections between subject matter. I interviewed Daniel last year and you can hear him talk about his First Nations heritage and some of the ideas behind his work on the podcast and YouTube Channel.

Jaq Grantford wins People’s Choice!

JUST ANNOUNCED! Jaq Grantford wins the Archibald Prize 2023 ANZ People’s Choice award with her portrait of beloved former Play School presenter and Logie Hall of Fame inductee Noni Hazlehurst.

Melbourne-based Grantford set out to portray Hazlehurst's signature energy and warmth. The result is a captivating portrait of Hazlehurst, who is depicted smiling and gazing through a rain-flecked window – a nod to her Play School days. Grantford explains that the symbols drawn onto the window are symbols for safety and protection, 'not just for her, but for everyone in these uncertain times’.

When notified of the win, Grantford said she was ‘blown away’ to have received this year’s ANZ People’s Choice award.

‘It's such an incredible honour to win the People's Choice award and a real testament to how beloved Noni is. She is such a delightful person, and I love how people's faces light up when they mention her name. She has a real magic about her,’ said Grantford.

‘I love her passion for the things she believes in, and she has a wonderful depth to her – an empathetic, credible face as a presenter and a sensitive and insightful actor. To try to capture Noni on canvas was an absolute joy. I feel very humbled that people connected with the portrait and how Noni was portrayed. A most heartfelt thank you to all those who voted.’

You can see Grantford's portrait on display in the Archibald, Wynne & Sulman Prizes 2023 exhibition until 3 September. Find out more and book tickets: https://bit.ly/40GDDSH

On NOW - ‘Wheel of Fortune’!!! If you’ve ever watched my 30min YouTube video of talking about her work and process in her Sydney studio you will know that she lives and breathes art - and specifically painting. What I particularly love about Wendy’s work is how she brings together multiple images and perspectives with fluid brushstrokes, layer upon layer, never prescribing but allowing the viewer to take from it what resonates for them. As Wendy puts it with respect to this show, ‘Multiple images take us beyond the surface of things, suggesting alternate scenarios, secrets or hidden truths.’ I also love the way women are ever present in her work - a reminder of Wendy’s strong support for women’s rights. She was also this year awarded an AM for significant service to the visual arts which is no surprise - she freely shares her art and knowledge and offers her services to the disadvantaged and overlooked. Wendy has been a podcast guest twice - eps 45 and 99 and is a multiple award winner including the Archie and Sulman. Go see her show - it’s fabulous - until 26 August 2023 in person and online.

Last night and tomorrow night!!
It was a privilege to talk with leading artist last night in the ‘Artists in Conversation series at the and I can’t wait to see her work tomorrow night at the opening of ‘In the Arms of Unconsciousness: Women, Feminism and the Surreal’ ! The exhibition brings together 22 leading and significant female Australian artists together to examine feminism and the surreal. including two other podcast guests and .
Last night Del generously shared so much of her knowledge and insights into her practice, revealed narratives behind her work and shared some behind the scenes stories around the making of her internationally acclaimed film ‘Blaze’. We also discussed her astonishing work ‘love wants to give’ (pictured above and which will be included in the surrealism show) about which she said:
‘One of the most important canons to me is the canon of surrealism and, in particular, increasingly a celebration of female surrealists…They (the paintings) are fever dreams on one level. What do they make you feel? How do they slap your brain around?’
Thanks to everyone who came along last night - as usual it’s the warmth emanating from the audience which makes these talks so special!!
