Intro to Equine Bodywork and Biomechanics Clinic
Sally Feuerberg
An Equine Bodywork and Biomechanics Clinic was held at Grandview Farms Equestrian Center in Goshen, Connecticut, on Sunday, March 10. The host was Kera Robinson, owner and lead trainer at Grandview Farms. The guest lecturer was Sorbara Diane Sorbara of Infinity Equine Unlimited. Diane is a certified Reiki Master and Equine Myo Manipulative Functional Therapist.
At this clinic, Diane, with her assistant, Nicole Gregory, worked with one of Grandview Farm’s equine residents, Chy, a 10-year-old Morgan/Quarter Horse mare. Diane discussed horse behaviors that can indicate problems and the physiological effects massage has on your horse’s body. She reviewed the benefits of bodywork that include the opportunity to enhance your horse's performance, reduce inflammation, and increase flexibility and range of motion. Diane explained that equine bodywork loosens tight muscle fibers, knots, spasms, and stress points. Additional benefits are improved circulation, decreased pain, improved muscle tone, and boosting your horse’s immune system.
Diane demonstrated and discussed many different techniques she uses during her bodywork sessions such as Trigger Point Release, T Touch, infrared and LED light therapy, essential oil application, Kinesiology tape applications, and Reiki energy therapy. Walk and trot ground pole exercises were also demonstrated under Diane’s instruction with Chy and her owner, Tierney. These beneficial techniques can improve her horse’s flexibility, balance, and strength, and assist horses in recovering from body ailments such as sacroiliac pain and back injury stiffness.
Sunday’s event was the first in a series of mini-clinics, demos, and lectures to be presented at Grandview Farms Equestrian Center. A mini lecture and clinic on horse nutrition is scheduled for April 6.
