Will have an updated forecast this evening once I look at all the numerical computer models. Watching for severe weather possible next week on Wednesday.

I'll keep everyone posted. I restarted making forecasts because of the severe weather season that will arrive in March.

Monday (USA): On this day 65 years ago, Cat-3 Hurricane AUDREY—an odd, early-season storm—smashed the US Gulf Coast. The center of the large, powerful storm came ashore near the Texas/Louisiana state line, sending a massive storm surge into the small swamp towns of SW Louisiana. The town of Cameron was wiped out, with over 400 killed. Folks were warned about the approaching hurricane, but many didn't evacuate because they were not on the *immediate* shoreline and therefore didn't feel threatened. These days we have a better understanding of storm surge, and we now know what matters is not how far you are from the shore—it's your *elevation*. AUDREY remains a powerful illustration of the unique danger storm surge poses to the extremely flat and low-lying US Gulf Coast. (Photo: Shreveport Times, 29 June 1957 - AP Wirephoto.)

New weather model guidance has come in and from looking at SSTs in the Pacific Ocean, I think La Niña is going to take hold and possibly get moderate to strong in nature. This will lead to much less wind shear in the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean Sea. I’m predicting more storms than usual in the tropics with the potential for stronger storms than we normally see.

I think there will be an above-normal chance of a storm or two during the months of June and July, however, I’m concerned about August through October. That’s when it could get really busy. Keep in mind that the Atlantic Ocean hurricane season peaks in mid-September. SSTs should be nice and toasty by then, unfortunately.

Stay tuned...

On this day in 1978, a great blizzard struck the state, dumping several feet of snow. With wind gusts at 100 miles per hour in some areas, many referred to the blizzard as a “white hurricane.” Nearly 6000 people were stranded on Ohio roads. The extreme cold and precipitation caused the deaths of 51 people and resulted in more than $100 million in damage. Governor James A. Rhodes declared a state of emergency calling the blizzard the “greatest disaster in Ohio history.” The last of the snow didn’t melt in some northern areas of the state until May 5.
