It's been an emotional day ... and few weeks across America. So, I figured I share this story.

13 years ago I was laying in bed in Baghdad, Iraq. I brought my Razr cellphone with me overseas with exorbitant roaming charges (remember those?) just so from time to time I could talk with family & loved ones. That morning, while sleeping, my phone started buzzing repeatedly. At first, I ignored it because picking up the phone was crazy expensive. But it continued to buzz and I looked at the clock and it was 0530. I was due to get up shortly anyway, but jumped up because I got concerned that something back home was wrong. When I looked at the caller it was my sister. I answered frantically expecting the worst.

My sister asked me, "Are you coming home now?" I replied with, "What?" She asked again, "Do you get to come home now?" I said, "No. Why would I get to come home?"

She said, "They got him!"
"Got who?" I said ...

"Osama Bin Laden. They got him!"

I was confused at first. I was also wiping crust out of my eyes. But I turned on the tv in my room that broadcasted AFN (Armed Forces Network) and saw thousands of people outside of the White House. It looked like a mob. It took me a second to realize what was going on. It was a celebration! America had won. We all had won. Justice was served almost 10 years later from the day that broke all of our hearts.

Being that I was deployed from my job in sports talk radio at the time, I got numerous requests to call in from Iraq to share what we were all feeling over there given the news. It really was incredible to share those feelings and emotions with so many people. We were united again on that day.

It feels like forever ago. It also feels like the last time we all celebrated America together. I long for something like that to bring us together again. Perspective. Understanding. Empathy. We've traded these things for a cheap hit on social media. We've traded them for a self-promotion to causes that get clicks but don't actually solve anything. We've traded the soul of our country and the heart of patriotism for an uncertain future. We've lost our leaders and leadership to the political machine.

I pray for America. I pray for Americans and finding something to bring us back together again. 🇺🇸

After 25 years in the Navy, he retired from the SEAL Teams, and started speaking to organizations and teams about the importance of resilience, leadership, and trust.

Hazard Ground, Ep. 298 - Nate Boyer (Green Beret / "MVP")

Former Green Beret Nate Boyer returns this week to the podcast with a specific purpose: to discuss the film that he wrote, directed and starred in titled "MVP." Boyer co-founded his non-profit MVP (Merging Vets & Players) with Jay Glazer of FOX Sports to bring together combat veterans and former professional athletes as they both share a bond of the tough transition when the uniform comes off. The movie takes us through the story of how Merging Vets & Players got started and is based on factual events. The most poignant part of the film are the emotions that many vets are struggling with when it comes to mental health and PTSD. Boyer and his team really do a great job bringing those feelings to life and making them real for the audience. "MVP" is now available on most streaming platforms including Amazon Prime and Hulu.

Nate Boyer has lived anything but an ordinary life. Primarily because he’s a man who knows how to set goals and achieve them. Not just any goals either; we’re talking big goals. In early 2005, after working as a volunteer at refugee camps in Africa, he came back to the US and joined the Army, becoming a Green Beret in 2006. After serving in combat as a Green Beret, he decided to work toward achieving another dream of his: playing professional football. An unlikely candidate, Nate made the University of Texas Longhorn football team as a walk-on safety. Following graduation, he then went on to join the Seattle Seahawks as a long snapper. Nate Boyer knows what it means to follow your dreams, even if that means swimming against the current. He knows what it means to rise up to a challenge and ultimately succeed. And now, he’s using his own experiences to help other dreamers do the same!
