The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage is rolling out a series of traditional skills events for owners of vernacular buildings. Often described as ‘cottages’, these buildings comprise modest homes constructed using local materials and traditional techniques by ‘ordinary’ people using materials such as thatch, stone, slate, earth, wattle and unsawn timber. The aim of the events is to raise awareness of traditional skills, to promote the sensitive reuse of our vernacular built heritage using appropriate approaches and materials, and to share knowledge and guidance with building owners. These one and two day events will include traditional skill training in the repair of drystone walls; thatched roofs; mud walled buildings; cobbled surfaces; use of willow in basketry; how to construct a French drain; lime pointing/use of lime mortars and repairing/maintaining a traditional hedgerow. We are also organising a number of open days at vernacular homes which have undergone repair in order to showcase works and approaches.

31st May & 1st June – Repair of cobbled surfaces – Wexford
22nd June - Repair of dry stone walls - Clare
6th & 7th of July – Repair of dry stone walls - Westmeath
26th-27th July – Use of traditional lime mortars – Cavan
27th-28th July – Repair of drystone walls and use of traditional lime mortars – Wicklow
3rd & 4th of August - Use of traditional lime mortars & repair of masonry structures – Leitrim
10th & 11th of August – Traditional farmhouse Repair Course - Clare
31st Aug & 1st of Sept – Repair of mud walls and use of earth mortars – Limerick
7th & 8th of September – Repair of mud walls and use of earth mortars – Limerick
13th & 14th of September – Use of traditional lime mortars – Mayo TBC

Other events where locations and dates still have to confirmed include training skills in thatch, french drains, basket weaving and addressing wildlife/vegetation in vacant buildings.

We are delighted to announce the launch of the Farming Renewable Energy Industry Summit 2024.

As it stands, Ireland’s adoption of renewable technologies at farm level is well below the European average. Ireland recently ranked 23rd out of the EU-27 countries for renewable energy from agriculture, producing just 2.6% compared with the EU-27 average of 12.1%. There is enormous potential for Irish agriculture and the energy industries to develop key relationships for the benefit of all stakeholders, especially in the areas of solar and AD.

This summit brings together the energy and agricultural sectors to explore the areas where collaboration and partnerships can have a mutually beneficial relationship in achieving both industries ESG and sustainability objectives. By sharing insights, leveraging technology and developing joint initiatives, the sectors’ aim to create a synergy that not only meets ESG criteria but sets a new standard for environmentally conscious and socially responsible business practices, benefitting both sectors and the broader community.

The summit is taking place in the Midlands Park Hotel on Wednesday, April 17th 2024.

Register before February 20th to avail of our Super Early Bird offer!
