As I’m putting up my Christmas today, I was thinking about my friend and master carver Amos Lane who I met through my work with the Resolve podcast to talk about the tragic loss and murder of his mother in the 80s. Like many others, Amos was hit pretty hard during the pandemic. I told my sister Patuk Glenn about his story. Patuk forever supports our local traditional artists and she went to his shop and bought a big beautiful walrus skull mount from him in 2020. He thanked her profusely and said, “because you bought this, my kids can have Christmas this year.” Thinking and remembering my uuma Amos this year. Unfortunately he was also tragically murdered by state troopers and Fairbanks police last year. I won’t ever stop fighting for justice for our people in the ways I know how. Support local, my friends. You might make someone’s Christmas. ♥️

Alaska Natives on the Front Line — Coffee & Quaq and Native News Online -- By Jenna Kunze and Alice Qannik Glenn

"This podcast provided a rare, insider’s look at the impact of climate change on the Indigenous community of Utqiaġvik, Alaska. Through intimate conversations with residents, the journalists drew listeners into a culture unfamiliar to many, revealing the precariousness of tundra existence as the planet warms and the resilience and resourcefulness needed to adapt and survive."
The first annual Covering Climate Now Journalism Awards, celebrates the best climate reporting of 2020. Hosted by NBC News’ Al Roker and Savannah Sellers, the special illuminates how powerful storytelling, science-based reporting, and a growing understanding of the unequal impacts of climate change are at the center of coverage of the climate emergency. Judges selected from nearly 600 entries submitted from 38 countries.

Finalists were chosen by a panel of distinguished judges including leading journalists from newsrooms around the world. Covering Climate Now and Columbia Journalism Review launched the awards to celebrate journalism that provides a model for journalists everywhere as newsrooms increase their coverage of the climate crisis.

Coffee & Quaq provides a platform for the generation of Alaska Natives who continue practicing cultural traditions, but also enjoy the modern commodities of the millennial era like Mario Kart, iPhones, and Tang. Coffee & Quaq? It's a great time to be alive.

The mission of Coffee & Quaq is to celebrate, share, and explore the collective experience of contemporary Native life in urban Alaska. Coffee & Quaq aims to incite discussion on topics of interest for young Alaska Native people and bring awareness to the various facets of modern Indigenous life. It's a podcast show for Indigenous people, by Indigenous people to help provide an accurate representation of Alaska Native life in urban and rural settings.

Quaq is the Iñupiaq word for frozen or raw meat or fish and it is also a verb: to eat frozen or raw meat or fish. Coffee to represent our contemporary and woke side and Quaq to examine our topics through an Alaska Native lens.
